Bab 294: Chapter 294: The Daimyo of the Wind Country Does Not Play by the Rules

While heavy snowfall blanketed other regions, the Land of Wind remained its usual self, arid and unforgiving. Even the rare snowfall melted quickly under the scorching sun, leaving the desert blazing during the day and freezing at night. The infamous sandstorms would arise unexpectedly, wreaking havoc on Konoha's combat forces.

Unfamiliar terrain and unpredictable natural disasters turned every step into a gamble. Many Konoha teams were wiped out, not by enemy attacks, but by the harsh and relentless environment. The ninjas often lamented that they would rather face the warriors of Sunagakure than these merciless elements.

Sunagakure, however, was not one to fight fair. Their ninjas took full advantage of the terrain, using dirty tricks and guerrilla tactics. Orochimaru, who relished cunning strategies himself, couldn't help but appreciate their methods, even as they frustrated Konoha's efforts.

A Losing Proposition

Orochimaru saw the war for what it was: a costly endeavor with little to gain. The logical course of action was to halt the conflict, but orders from the village were clear—press on until victory. Though Orochimaru had already secured his prestige and reputation, the prolonged war weighed on the entire effort.

Despite Sunagakure's dirty tactics, the Sand Ninja's increasing reluctance to engage in open battle frustrated Konoha's advance. The ninjas found themselves stuck, fighting not just the enemy but also the unrelenting desert.

A Brilliant Plan

Studying the map, Orochimaru chuckled to himself. "Interesting," he mused before summoning the logistics team.

"I want a series of windproof fortresses constructed in Konoha's combat zones," he announced, presenting a crude sketch. "They don't need to be large or strong, just durable enough to shield our forces from the cold, sand, and harsh winds."

The logistics officer scrutinized the drawing and hesitantly asked, "Dai Orochimaru, are all these fortresses to be built in our current positions?"

Orochimaru smirked. "If not on our side, would you prefer I build them on the enemy's?"

The joke sent a chill through the officer, who wasn't entirely sure if Orochimaru was serious.

"Enough," Orochimaru dismissed him, losing interest. He turned back to the map, his mind drifting to his old comrade, Shinki. Those were simpler times—sharing ideas, joking freely, and discussing ninjutsu without the weight of rank or war.

The Fortresses Take Shape

Orochimaru's plan was straightforward: build small, temporary hexagonal fortresses across the battlefield. Each could shelter six ninjas, offering them a place to rest and regroup, away from the biting cold and suffocating sandstorms.

The construction, led by earth-release ninjas, progressed quickly. Within days, these small fortresses dotted the desert, transforming the battlefield. Konoha's forces, no longer wandering in search of shelter, regained their composure and momentum. The fortresses couldn't entirely shield them from the sandstorms, but they provided enough relief to turn the tide.

As Konoha regained its aggression, Sunagakure found itself on the defensive once again. The Kazekage watched in silence, grudgingly admitting Orochimaru's tactical brilliance. Even destroying the fortresses proved futile—they could be rebuilt faster than they were torn down.

A Stalemate

The Sand Village resisted fiercely, unwilling to retreat further. Yet, their resources were stretched thin. Relief came unexpectedly when the Daimyo of the Wind Country intervened, providing much-needed aid. This newfound support allowed Sunagakure to continue their fight, even as defeat loomed over them.

Konoha's position, however, was no better. Despite pushing the frontline deeper into the Land of Wind, the prolonged conflict bled their resources dry. The announcement of aid from the Wind Country's Daimyo sent shockwaves through Konoha's leadership.

In a rare outburst, the Hokage tore apart the report in frustration. "Why now?!" he fumed. "Why wait until we're on the brink of victory to step in?"

Both sides were locked in a bitter stalemate, neither willing to yield. For Konoha, the cost of victory threatened to outweigh its rewards. For Sunagakure, survival hung by a thread, bolstered only by the Daimyo's reluctant generosity.

And so, the war dragged on, each step forward met with resistance, each victory tempered by loss.
