Bab 23: Chapter 22: Golden Scales Fish Feast

Inside the cabin of the Kado ship, a large golden fish was placed on the table where Kado and Fite were having their meal.

Sanchi circled the golden-scaled fish, his eyes sparkling. He was caressing the fish's scales and muttering to himself:

"This part can be made into braised pork tenderloin!"

"This part can be made into sweet and sour fish tail!"

"I wonder if the fish brain with sugar would taste good!"

Kado looked at Sanchi, who was so absorbed in his admiration of the fish, and couldn't help but feel a bit disgusted. The guy looked like he was caressing the smooth skin of a beautiful woman, and saliva was dripping from his mouth.

"Hey, that's our fish, be careful not to get your drool on it," Fite frowned and reminded Sanchi.

"Oh, oh, haha, I've decided. From now on, I'll be the cook on your pirate ship. Since we're companions now, this fish is mine too," Sanchi glanced at Fite and, after saying a couple of more reasonable things, started muttering again, "Tomato stewed fish belly, not sure how that would taste, or maybe a bean sprout soup would be nice."

Fite's forehead was marked with a few dark lines, and cold sweat dripped down. This guy really was crazy.

"Stop talking and get to work. I'm about to starve here. Hurry up and let us taste your cooking. If it's no good, I'm going to kick you out," Kado said weakly. These days, he had been so busy fighting for the golden-scaled fish that he hadn't had much time to eat, and after several intense battles, Kado's stomach had started rebelling, desperately trying to take control.

"Hey, Captain, are you really going to let this guy cook? This golden-scaled fish is quite valuable," Fite gave Sanchi a doubtful look. "And besides, who knows if those medals of his are even real?"

"Smack!"

Sanchi suddenly slapped the table, snapping out of his trance. It seemed that Fite's words had really riled him up.

"Kid, are you doubting my cooking skills? I'll duel you right now!" Sanchi pulled a kitchen knife from somewhere and started chopping at the table. Wood chips flew everywhere, and what was once a perfectly good table now had a corner missing for no reason.

"Alright, alright, we'll settle the duel later. Eating is more important. After we eat, we'll have the strength to fight, right?" Kado quickly pushed the two feuding men apart, changing the subject.

"Hmph."

Both of them simultaneously snorted, glaring at each other with disdain, then turned their heads to the side in contempt.

"Hehe, as long as there's no fighting, eating is the most important thing," Kado chuckled, pointing to the wound on the golden-scaled fish's jaw. "I have a good idea. What if we cut open here, scoop out all the fish meat, and then stuff some random fish meat inside? I wonder if it would work."

"Mm!" Fite's eyes lit up. "Yeah, not only can we eat the fish meat, but we can also take the empty shell and enter it in a competition to win a Devil Fruit!"

"Tch, what a stupid idea. There's no way to scoop out all the fish meat through such a small wound. Even if we could, it'd probably turn into fish paste, and we'd just end up making fish balls," Sanchi said disdainfully, giving Fite a look.

"Hehe, the small cut isn't a problem," Kado said, pulling a bottle of glue out from under the table, grinning mischievously. "We'll just make the cut bigger, and then use this all-purpose glue to stick the scales back on. No one will be able to tell!"

Sanchi disagreed with Kado's method, feeling regretful that they couldn't cook the golden-scaled fish in its entirety. In the end, the three of them decided to settle it with a vote. Obviously, Sanchi couldn't win. Reluctantly, Sanchi even suggested letting his assistant chef participate in the vote, but that idea was immediately vetoed by Kado and Fite.

With their opinions settled, the three of them got to work. Sanchi as the head chef, Kado as the assistant, and Fite applying the glue.

.....

On the Snow Bear Pirate Crew's ship, Snow Bear pondered back and forth, feeling uneasy. On one hand, Kado's strength was formidable, but he was just a somewhat famous bounty hunter. During their first battle with Bellal, he was quickly defeated. On the other hand, if Kado's strength was truly weak, then how did he manage to defeat Bellal with just two hits?

In the end, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something off about it. After Kado obtained the golden-scaled fish, he had secretly fled, unwilling to face anyone else in battle. Moreover, after defeating Bellal, Kado didn't deal with Snow Bear, instead scaring him off without a fight. The two of them never actually fought.

As a result, Snow Bear came to a conclusion: Kado must have learned Bellal's weaknesses from the three former companions. This would explain how Kado could easily defeat Bellal, or perhaps he had some kind of one-time special ability that prevented him from engaging in consecutive battles.

After reaching this conclusion, Snow Bear felt utterly ashamed. He, a notorious pirate with a bounty of over 80 million, had been scared off by a 15 or 16-year-old thief. Such a thing could never be allowed to be known by others.

So, after Snow Bear returned to the pirate ship, he hid the truth and instead claimed that he had defeated Bellal. However, the golden-scaled fish had been stolen by the pirate thief Kado. Now, they were determined to pursue Kado with all their might, hoping to catch up to him before they returned to Loguetown.

The Snow Bear Pirates were united in their goal, and they swiftly sailed toward Loguetown.

Unfortunately, this sea area was already very close to Loguetown, and since Kado had taken the lead, by the time the Snow Bear Pirates arrived, the Night Owl Pirates had already found a hidden dock to hide in. As a result, the Snow Bear Pirates found nothing.

On the Kado Ship, Sanchi was busy in the kitchen, while Kado and Fite sat upright at the dining table. One held a knife, the other a fork, and they each wore a pristine white napkin around their necks, looking like nobles. However, every time Sanchi brought out a dish, the two of them would act like starving wolves, nearly fighting over the food.

As for Sanchi's kitchen assistants and the three unlucky souls who had been rescued by Kado, they were all exhausted and went to rest early. Only Kado, Fite, and Sanchi, those three freaks, still had the energy to cook and eat in the middle of the night.

After making a racket for most of the night, Sanchi had turned over a hundred pounds of fish into hundreds of different dishes, and the spare ingredients on the Kado Ship had all been used up.

After showing off his cooking skills, Sanchi washed his hands and walked out of the kitchen with a big smile.

"How was it? My cooking is simply the best in the world!"

In response to this question, Kado was more concerned about whether there was any food left. After getting a clear answer from Sanchi that everything had been eaten, Kado let out a sigh of relief. He waved his hand at Sanchi and Fite, signaling that he was going to bed.

"What!" At this moment, Sanchi seemed to suddenly remember something. He stared at the table and the hundreds of empty plates were scattered on the floor. ''Damn it, you two are simply a pig, the Golden Scaled Fish full set of dishes that I worked so hard for most of the night was actually eaten up by you before I could even taste a single bite" Sanchi, furious, caught up with Kado and Fite, grabbed one by the neck with one hand and shook it vigorously, "Spit it out."

"Burp!" Fite let out a loud belch, then stuck his finger into his mouth and wiggled it around. He pulled out a fish bone and held it up in front of Sanchi. "Spit it out? You wanna eat it? Here, try it. The taste is actually pretty good."

"I'm going to duel with you!" Sanchi exploded in anger.

It was another bright and sunny day. The residents of Loguetown had gathered in the square to the north of the town. In the center of the square stood a giant temporary stage, and on the stage, sitting in a row on a dozen chairs, were famous chefs from all over the world.

These chefs were the judges for today's hunting competition. All the ingredients would be evaluated by them, and they would decide who the winner would be. The prize for the champion was a Devil Fruit.

The residents of the town gathered around the nearby viewing stands, loudly discussing among themselves.

"Did you hear? They've discovered a golden-scaled fish on the seas! It's the legendary ingredient!"

"Yeah, I heard that it was said that Roger became the Pirate King because he ate the golden-scaled fish."

"Really?! Does that mean whoever gets the golden-scaled fish can become the champion?"

"Maybe not. There are many legendary ingredients, so maybe other rare ingredients will appear too."

"Hmph, though it's not certain, there's a 90% chance that the golden-scaled fish will be today's champion."

"The largest golden-scaled fish is only a bit more than a meter long. My friend saw a white-bearded shark over fifty meters long at sea. Last time, a three-meter white-bearded shark won the championship. With a length of over fifty meters, I'm afraid the golden-scaled fish won't be able to compete with the white-bearded shark."

"That's true. Rarity is important, but size matters too. Something just over a meter long definitely isn't as valuable as something fifty meters long."

The discussions among the townspeople were temporarily put aside. On the opposite side of the grand platform was the port, where rows of ships were docked. These were the ships of the brave hunters returning from their expeditions.

The champion of today's event would be chosen from among them. The members of the Night Owl Pirates were also mixed in, but Kado had switched to a different ship early on, one that flew the Night Owl Pirate flag. After making some changes to his appearance, Kado had gone from being the renowned bounty hunter "Saint Hand Kado" to a small-time pirate with a bounty of over ten million—now known as "Night Owl Kado."

Kado had originally formed his pirate crew for situations like this. Having two identities was often far more useful than just one. In fact, Kado even hoped to obtain a navy identity someday. That way, he could navigate between three different factions and enjoy a much more carefree life.
