Bab 23: Chapter 26: Unexpected Circumstances, Why Was There Gunfire?
After leaving the territory of the Wildfire Gang, Lin Feng and Caitlyn headed straight for the abandoned arcade where Jinx was located.
On the way, Lin Feng briefly introduced the function of the Z-type driver to Caitlyn.
Upon learning that it could traverse time, Caitlyn couldn't help but swallow a few times.
Such technology—if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she would never have believed it.
The look Caitlyn gave Lin Feng was filled with even more astonishment.
Are scientists all such monsters?
Following the previous plan, Lin Feng and Caitlyn first went to explore the underground pipes.
The underground pipes of Zaun are different from modern underground systems.
They are dirtier and worse.
But unlike the usual smell of sewage, the sewage of Zaun has an extremely strong irritating odor.
The prosperity of the upper levels did not come without a price.
A large amount of industrial wastewater is dumped into the lower levels, which is a major point of conflict between the upper and lower tiers.
Although Caitlyn came from a noble background, she was not a delicate person.

In an instant, Caitlyn felt the surrounding air become fresher.
She had always wanted to try this miraculous "scientific" cloak, but she didn't expect Lin Feng to give it to her here.
"You..."
"Just wear it for a bit, we can take turns. Cough, cough!"
Lin Feng coughed a couple of times, then frowned; the irritating smell felt like stepping into a chemical accident site.
Before Caitlyn could say anything else, Lin Feng had already started walking again, continuing down the narrow tunnel.
Although there was no apparent danger, Caitlyn felt her heart racing and tightened the ghost cloak around herself, following Lin Feng.
Along the way, Lin Feng did not hesitate to take back the cloak when he felt he couldn't stand it anymore, then handed it back to Caitlyn when he felt better.
On one hand, Lin Feng wanted to train his adaptability to Zaun, and on the other, he wanted to take care of Caitlyn a bit more.
He had promised Heimerdinger to do this, and that was Lin Feng's principle in life.
They finally reached the designated location on the map, which indicated that directly above them was the arcade where Jinx was located.
In fact, Lin Feng could feel it himself.
The sounds of clanging and banging from above reminded him of the fear of being dominated by the kids upstairs.
But now it was no longer kids up there, but Jinx.
Who else could make such a racket if not Jinx?
Uncertain of what Jinx was up to, accompanied by heavy metal music, the ceiling continued to thud.
Jinx was indeed a little mad girl... Lin Feng and Caitlyn exchanged glances and decided to turn back.
This route was meant to be a backup retreat path, and they just needed to ensure its accessibility.
Returning to the main road, this time was when they would truly face the reality.
Lin Feng and Caitlyn slowly approached the direction of the arcade, and as they moved closer, the crowd became increasingly sparse.
But after walking a certain distance, the number of people seemed to bounce back, beginning to increase again.
From this point on, passersby gradually dwindled while Jinx's people slowly increased in number.
Or one could say, it was Diana's people.
From a distance, Lin Feng recognized many of the faces he had seen at the Fugen Tavern that day, standing guard along the main road leading to the arcade.
They were all heavily armed, wielding various weapons, with some standing at fixed points and others seemingly patrolling.
Lin Feng knew this was not a simple operation.
He and Caitlyn laid out some action plans.
First, they would see if they could make contact with Jinx in a peaceful manner; if that didn't work, they would retreat and try again.
As Lin Feng and Caitlyn entered the line of sight of the group, things went differently than he had imagined.
The moment they appeared, the crowd immediately attacked them, leaving no room for negotiation.
Bullets whizzed past Lin Feng's ears, and he quickly pressed the button on the Z-type driver.
Time and space tore apart, bringing Lin Feng and Caitlyn back to their state ten seconds ago.
Lin Feng broke out in a cold sweat.
This was not right.
Why would they shoot directly?
Was this meant to provoke war?
The last person who had killed an upper-level enforcer was Silco.
That incident had almost triggered a war between two cities, but what about this time?
Caitlyn sensed Lin Feng's unease; for her, everything was a first-time experience.
"What's wrong?"
Caitlyn asked.
Explaining repeatedly felt too cumbersome, so Lin Feng simply said,
"You wait for me here."
After saying that, Lin Feng stepped out of the alley, heading towards the other end alone.
But the outcome was the same.
Although he did not see the uniforms of the Piltover enforcers, the moment the guards spotted Lin Feng, they recognized him right away after just a glance.
Next came another overwhelming attack, once again throwing Lin Feng into the battlefield.
He pressed the Z-type driver button, rewinding time once more.
"What's wrong?"
Caitlyn asked again, this being her 'first time' asking.
Lin Feng pondered for a moment,
"Let's go."
With that, without a trace of hesitation, Lin Feng led Caitlyn away, taking another side path.
All the while, Lin Feng felt a headache coming on.
He had a foreboding feeling that the fate of the upper and lower levels might very well be in his and Caitlyn's hands.
If lower-tier people shot at enforcers, no matter the task, the enforcers could request reinforcements!
But the result of requesting reinforcements would most likely only exacerbate the conflict and could even trigger a war.
Advancing wasn't an option, and retreating wasn't either!
If the two of them wandered around here and exceeded the upper-level's allotted task time, those council members would do whatever it took to eliminate the lower-tier threats.
And the so-called "whatever it takes" meant not shying away from waging war.
Aside from Jinx, there were no other known breakthroughs, at least in the short term, it would be difficult to find.
Ultimately, simply running away wouldn't solve the problem either.
Lin Feng couldn't just run off with Caitlyn; although she had developed some trust in him, she wouldn't abandon her mission to hide away with him.
Moreover, she was an upper-level person; where could she run to?
Even if he managed to escape, Caitlyn would still go on to complete her mission alone.
And the outcome of entering that arcade was death.
Although Lin Feng didn't want to invite trouble, he also couldn't allow Caitlyn to die for nothing. The Z-type driver's effect only lasted ten seconds; if they missed it, they would only have regrets.
The more Lin Feng thought about it, the worse his headache became. What was initially meant to be a simple mission had now turned into a quagmire from which he couldn't extricate himself.
Some lower-tier individuals were intent on provoking war.
Who was it?
Was it Jinx? Diana? ... Or maybe Singed?
Lin Feng didn't know, but he didn't have time to ask each one.
After spending a few minutes, Lin Feng informed Caitlyn of what had just happened.
Amazed that Lin Feng had already time-traveled, Caitlyn was even more shocked by the actions of the lower-tier people.
She couldn't believe that without Lin Feng, she would have died once already.
Caitlyn instinctively wanted to call for help, but after Lin Feng's explanation, she understood the potential consequences of such an act.
Even so, Caitlyn remained resolute not to abandon her mission.
Because she was a proud enforcer of Piltover.
