Harlow took her hands off Alanis before he could say anything further. She didn't want to be around these two anymore. At the moment, they were both dead to her.
Alanis stared at his hands momentarily stunned. He couldn't believe the same woman who had once clung onto him like a leach now acted like a stranger overnight.
Just yesterday she had been calling all morning, sending series of voice notes that he had ignored. Was she still so mad at him?
Harlow isn't someone who stays mad at him no matter what. Snapping back to reality, Alanis tried to catch up, but Claudia caught his hands before he could follow his wife.
"Alanis it's all my fault. Even if I knew Alex and his mother were faking his illness, I should never have competed with him for your affection. Please don't hate me, Harlow."
Faking...
Faking illness...
Before Harlow could snap back to reality, her hands were already plastered on her half-sister's cheek. She could take anything, but not anyone lying on her dead child
Alanis's face which was once covered with guilt quickly shifted to anger as he held Claudia protectively behind him. "What are you doing Harlow, she's your sister," Alanis yelled.
Harlow glared at her half-sister, "Don't you dare lie about my son ever again." Harlow yelled at her, her voice was loud enough to attract the eyes of others around.
Claudia saw the little attention and knew she had to do something quickly to save her face before the public. No matter what she does, she can't forget she was a public figure and shouldn't be involved in scandals anymore especially after the last one years ago.
"I'm sorry Alanis. The last thing I want is a misunderstanding between you two because of me. I would never speak on it ever again since my sister doesn't want to admit she's been faking it all this while." Claudia held her cheek as she spoke with teary eyes.
Harlow couldn't believe the accusations. She turned to Alanis who remained silent, his silence was loud enough for her to know what he was thinking.
"You think our son would fake his illness too? You think I would lie about Alex being sick?" She yelled but Alanis remained silent. It's clear who he believes over her.
"Where did you whisk him off to this time? Alex is a kid, he could lie or do anything that's normal. You should apologize to your sister." Came his response and Harlow smiled again. She understood his hatred for her, but what she would never understand was why he also hated her son. Alex is his child and his only child.
If only he had agreed to come back home to see the countless hospital reports and drugs on the table. Maybe he wouldn't listen to a complete stranger's speculations about them.
If only he listened the countless times she called for him. Her stomach contracted again, that same painful stretch made her cough a little blood. The Hamilton family has hurt her more than she ever imagined.
If there's anything Harlow wished for is that she never met Alanis or the Hamilton family.
She stared at the man before her and all she
could feel was hate and resentment for him. She couldn't believe this was the man she once used to be head over heels for in the past.
"Over my dead body."
Harlow was about to walk away when her head spun, Claudia saw Alanis about to help her sister and she acted fast. "Ahh." She screamed and almost fell and Alanis caught her instead of his wife.
"Claudia, are you okay?" He asked ignoring the other woman that had hit her head on the floor. The doctor who saw Harlow fall rushed up to her.
"Miss Blackwood, are you okay? You're not strong enough to be standing on your own. You just lost a child." The doctor helped her up. He must have heard the commotion and decided to walk over.
Lost a child? Alanis paused with Claudia in his hands.
Harlow was pregnant?
Even Harlow was shocked too, but she felt too dizzy to say or do anything about the doctor's words. "You're not strong enough after the miscarriage, you need days of rest." Alanis didn't say anything and carried Claudia as he walked away. So did the doctor as he took Harlow to her assigned ward.
When Harlow arrived in her room, the doctor helped her lay on her bed, still upset with everything that happened between herself and Alanis, she couldn't believe that was the same man she was head over heels for.
What came over her back then?
Was she possessed with some spell?
"Mrs Blackwood please get enough rest, you've lost so much blood already and need to recover."
"Was I really pregnant?" Harlow asked and the doctor nodded. She cried again. She had not only lost a child today but two...
"So that's the reason for the contractions." She murmured.
"Contractions?" The doctor asked and she nodded.
"Wait." He stepped out of the room and was back with his box and two extra maids.
"What's going on?" Harlow asked, confused at what they were trying to do to her.
"Mrs Blackwood there's something we need to confirm."
"Pee in these." He gave her a little tub and she took it. The nurses helped ber into the bathroom and she peed in the tube. Once she was done, she returned the test tub to him.
The doctor left with his nurses and returned in no time with a paper in his hands. He had a smile on his face as he watched her.
"Miss Blackwood, congratulations. It turns out you were pregnant with twins but lost one due to the accident. However, the second child survived."
