In the next half hour, Chika quickly experienced what it truly meant to be "unlucky."
She almost tripped while descending the stairs—well, she actually did miss a step, but Amamiya's quick reflexes saved her just in time. She choked on her drink, dropped her phone, and it fell right onto her toes—among other mishaps.
"So unlucky," Chika muttered, not daring to move. She sat quietly on the tatami, hugging a pillow tightly. "It really seems like luck is a real thing."
Despite her streak of bad fortune, the pink-haired girl remained cheerful, her bright attitude unshaken. With a clear voice, she declared, "If the coin had landed on heads, my luck would've been amazing! I'd definitely have pulled the SSR I wanted."
"Eh~ That makes sense," Umi chimed in, crossing her arms thoughtfully. "I want to pull an SSR too."
Seriously? The first thing you think of after regaining good luck is mobile games and drawing characters?
Amamiya couldn't help but sigh inwardly. You two should aim higher! Why not buy a lottery ticket and try becoming rich instead?
Still, if you think about it, Chika's logic wasn't entirely wrong.
Luck may be invisible, but it's definitely real. What if they could manipulate it? Maybe if they tossed for heads first and boosted their fortune, they could try opening a blind box or enhancing a skill.
Even when using an item like the Mermaid's Tears for strengthening, there's always the risk of failure. Perhaps tossing a coin beforehand would ensure a better outcome.
"Amamiya-kun, what do you think?" Umi asked, tilting her head toward him.
"I think… it makes sense," Amamiya replied dryly. "It's almost midnight. Time to sleep."
"Really?" Umi checked her phone and was surprised. "Wow, it is late."
Amamiya settled down under his blanket, glanced at the two girls beside him, and said, "Lie down and go to sleep."
"What if that scythe-wielding evil spirit sneaks in?" Chika asked excitedly, raising her hand. "Should we take turns keeping watch?"
"No need," Shimizu replied lazily from her seat on the sofa. Her voice was sweet and calm, "I'll handle the night watch."
"Alright then," Chika said, finally lying down. She murmured softly, "Good night, Amamiya-kun, Umi-chan."
"Good night," they both replied.
The night passed without incident.
---
The next morning, Amamiya awoke to the sound of his alarm. He reached out to silence it, checking the time—7 a.m.
After resting his eyes for a few more moments, he sat up quietly and looked at the two girls beside him.
To be cautious, the three of them had slept together in the living room the night before. Adding Chika to the mix had simply meant adding another quilt.
Neither girl had woken up yet.
Umi was curled up on her side, her long, cloud-like hair spread out beneath her. She looked peaceful, a sharp contrast to her usual lively self.
In comparison, Chika's sleeping posture was much more chaotic.
The pink-haired girl was sprawled out on her back, limbs stretched in all directions. At some point during the night, she had kicked off her blanket, leaving one leg exposed. Her pajamas were disheveled, revealing her stomach. Her skin was pale and smooth, and her belly button—unexpectedly—was quite cute.
Despite being a high schooler, she still had the habit of kicking off her blanket, like a little kid.
Amamiya observed her for a moment before silently reaching over and grabbing her quilt.
He gently pulled the blanket back over her to keep her from catching a cold.
"Hmm?" Chika stirred, her eyes fluttering open groggily. "...Amamiya-kun?"
"It's fine," Amamiya said calmly. "You can keep sleeping."
"I'll sleep a little longer," Chika mumbled sleepily.
Amamiya glanced over at Shimizu, who sat on the sofa. After a full night of playing on her phone, her form had once again become faint and translucent.
"Sister Shimizu, did that evil spirit show up last night?" he asked.
Yesterday, she had insisted he call her "Sister," like the others did, saying "Mrs." felt too formal and distant. Amamiya had complied with her request.
"No," Shimizu shook her head. "Only a few ordinary spirits wandered by, but they left after a short while."
The scythe wielder's evil spirit hadn't appeared, and there wasn't much Amamiya could do about it. He entrusted Shimizu to watch over the two girls while he headed to the bathroom to freshen up.
It was already half-past seven in the morning.
Soon after, Chika and Umi both woke up.
Once the girls finished washing up, they had a simple breakfast of bread and milk. The three of them then headed out to walk the dog together.
Given the circumstances, they couldn't afford to split up, so they stuck together.
Just as they stepped outside, they bumped into Miko, who was leaving her house next door.
"Huh?"
Miko froze for a moment, her eyes widening in surprise.
Yesterday, there had only been one girl—Umi. But now, all of a sudden, there were two girls with Amamiya.
"Good morning, Miko-chan!" Chika called out, waving energetically.
Miko gave a slight nod, still somewhat taken aback. "...Good morning."
"I just got back to Tokyo last night," Chika explained, placing her hand on her hip and sighing softly. "I came straight to Amamiya-kun's place because I was worried about them."
Amamiya sighed quietly and gave Miko a look that seemed to say, 'Yeah, this is my life now.'
Miko stepped closer, giving him a sympathetic smile. "Poor you."
"Where are you headed so early, Miko?" Umi asked curiously.
"I'm off to my part-time job at the convenience store," Miko replied, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Since it's vacation time, I'm earning a little extra pocket money."
Her father had passed away, and her mother worked hard to support the family. Miko felt it was the least she could do—not to ask for money and try to help out where she could.
"A part-time job, huh..." Umi said thoughtfully, placing her hand on her hip. "I know of a part-time gig that pays way better. I do it once a week. The work's easy, and the money is way better than a convenience store."
"Huh?"
Miko blinked, momentarily stunned. She glanced at Amamiya nervously.
'No way... it's not one of 'those' jobs, is it?'
Umi continued without missing a beat, "You've got a great figure, Miko, and, um, your chest is quite... well-proportioned. You'd be really popular for this kind of work. If you're interested, I could recommend you."
Amamiya turned to Umi with a deadpan expression. "This job you're talking about... it's serious, right?"
"Of course it's serious!" Umi blinked in realization and quickly blushed, waving her hands in protest. "I'm talking about being a model! Not one of those sketchy jobs!"
Her face puffed up like an annoyed squirrel, cheeks flushed with frustration. She balled her fists and lightly punched Amamiya's shoulder. "You idiot, Amamiya-kun! What kind of things are you imagining? Like I'd ever do a job like 'that'!"
"Ahem, so it's modeling..." Miko coughed awkwardly, trying to hide her embarrassment.
The way Umi had described it—only working once a week, easy money—it was so easy to misunderstand.
"Ah, a model, huh?" Chika also coughed, clearly amused by the whole situation.
Catching Amamiya's glance, she quickly changed the subject with a look of innocent confusion. "Now that I think about it, Miko-chan does have the perfect figure to be a model. Kaguya-chan, on the other hand... well, she wouldn't even qualify!"
