"Probably got too nervous, causing a spike in blood pressure and then a lack of oxygen to the brain," Fu Lin lied without missing a beat, not caring whether his explanation made any sense.
"Such a troublesome brat," the man grumbled, lifting the fake Fu Lin and carrying him into the lab.
"Mission accomplished," Fu Lin chuckled mischievously and ran after the man.
And that's how it all happened. Let's have a moment of silence for the poor 'Fu Lin' on the operational table.
-------------------------
"...." With the injection of Honkai energy, the unconscious 'Fu Lin' woke up from the pain, opening his blood-red eyes and glaring viciously at real Fu Lin.
"Hmph~ Ah! Stop it!"
"Hmph... Ahhh! Aaaaah! Just kill me, kill me!"
As more Honkai energy was injected, 'Fu Lin's' screams of pleading turned into cries for death. However, the people around him looked on coldly, long numb to the cries of the test subjects, ignoring his desperate pleas.
"I beg you, kill me, let me die!" 'Fu Lin' pleaded bitterly, staring at himself.
"Tsk tsk tsk, it looks painful. it must be quite cruel~," Fu Lin remarked, feeling a pang of guilt. Nonetheless, he continued injecting the Honkai energy.
After a dozen minutes, the 'Fu Lin' on the operating table fell silent.
A researcher complained, "Where did you find this test subject? He couldn't even last half an hour."
'Damn, my body feels weaker again. Is it because his death, the disease came back to me? At least my appearance hasn't changed.'
Fu Lin supported himself against the operating table, his face a bit pale. He glanced at the lifeless 'Fu Lin' and formed a theory in his mind, relieved that he hadn't exposed himself.
The man with glasses asked, "Hey, are you alright?"
Fu Lin didn't want to engage with him at all, slowly standing up and walking to the resting area outside.
'Phew, seems like I need to find someone else to bear this for me again.' Fu Lin sat on the sofa, rubbing his tired temples.
'Oh? Isn't this a ready-made candidate?' He glanced at the man with glasses who followed him out and couldn't help but smile.
"Are you really okay?" The man with glasses asked, noticing Fu Lin's pale face.
"I'm fine. I should actually thank you..." Fu Lin muttered softly, then took out his pocket watch and started time-stopping again.
"The sensation of time-stop is amazing!" Fu Lin stretched his body, looking joyfully at the man with glasses.
He pulled out a strand of hair from his head once more. This time, to avoid detection, he stuffed it into the mouth of the man with glasses, making him swallow it, allowing the strand to fuse completely with him.
(Since there was no hair swap, the man with glasses won't take on Fu Lin's appearance.)
Ten seconds passed...
"Cough! Cough! Why does my throat hurt so suddenly?" The man with glasses clutched his neck, feeling as if he had been stabbed.
"Just drink some water; you'll feel better." Fu Lin handed him a cup filled with water, enjoying the sensation of his now healthy body.
"Thank you," the man with glasses replied politely.
"Now that you're rested, hurry up and deal with this test subject. Bring a new one afterward," came a voice from the other side of the door, urging them back inside.
"Sigh~ Let's go. These researchers are always demanding." The man with glasses put down his cup and called for Fu Lin as they headed back inside.
...
"How are the corpses usually handled?" Fu Lin asked, pushing a stretcher and looking at the man with glasses ahead.
"Corpses corrupted by Honkai energy are usually cremated to prevent the spread of infection among tower personnel," the man with glasses replied, his face pale.
"You don't look well. Go rest for a while, also can you remind me the location of the cremator. I'll take care of the cremation," Fu Lin said, noticing the pale face and realizing the hair's effect had started. He decided to handle it alone to prevent any mishaps.
"Not sure why, but suddenly I feel weak, and my head is spinning. I'll leave the rest to you." The man with glasses held his forehead, feeling exhausted as he slumped into a nearby chair to rest.
"Alright," Fu Lin nodded in farewell, then lifted the corpse and headed toward the crematorium.
As he passed by the door of the room where he was once held captive, he instinctively stopped and glanced at the shadow on the door, frowning.
'Sirin? Could she have seen it...?' Fu Lin looked nervously at the corpse of 'Fu Lin' on his shoulder, then quickened his pace toward the crematorium.
On the other side of the door, Sirin hugged her knees tightly, leaning against it as tears streamed down her face. Bella stepped forward to embrace her, offering comfort, while Avrora, Agata, and Galina watched on with concern.
"Phew, it's finally done," Fu Lin said, wiping the sweat from his forehead as he watched the corpse burn in the furnace.
As the flames consumed the body, the hair wrapped around its fingers was also quickly reduced to ash, reverting to its original form. Fu Lin glanced at his own body subconsciously but saw no signs of transformation.
Confused, he pondered for a moment before unwrapping the strand of hair from his hand. Only then did his body gradually revert to its original state.
Seeing this, Fu Lin hurriedly wrapped the hair back around his hand, relieved that the man with glasses hadn't followed. Otherwise, he would have been exposed.
Time passed, and under Fu Lin's supervision, the corpse was fully incinerated. He then turned and hurried back to where the man with glasses was resting.
When he returned, he saw the man with glasses trying to stand up but collapsing straight to the ground, startling Fu Lin into checking on him.
Looking at the unconscious man with glasses, Fu Lin recalled the time he himself had fainted in the small room, which had happened after making Sirin cry and run away.
In other words, the figure he saw earlier really was Sirin, and she had seen 'him' carrying the corpse of 'Fu Lin' towards...
"Thank you for taking on part of this burden for me. If you survive, I swear I'll become your sworn brother, unrelated by blood!" Fu Lin grasped the hand of the unconscious man with glasses, expressing his deep gratitude.
Man with glasses, 'Because of you, warmth fills every season!'
After settling him down, Fu Lin's gaze turned resolute as he made his way toward the room where Sirin was, determined to take her with him and escape this place.
"Umm... What should I say to make Sirin believe me?" Fu Lin paced back and forth outside the door, unsure of how to face her.
'Sirin, your brother asked me to take you away from here! No, she definitely wouldn't believe that.' Fu Lin shook his head, trying to dismiss this obviously flawed idea. He thought for a moment longer, then became frustrated.
"There's just no way! And why would I want to look like this while trying to convince Sirin to leave with me... Besides, I have no idea how to even find the exit and escape with her!"
Hearing the slight noise outside the door, Sirin clung tightly to Bella in fear, ignoring the shouting that seemed related to her.
'I should plan the escape route first' Fu Lin muttered, scratching his head before giving up with a sigh.
Fu Lin pulled out the key and unlocked the door. The first thing he saw was Sirin hiding behind Bella. He tried his best to put on a gentle expression, attempting to ease the awkward tension.
"Where is my brother..." Sirin peeked out from behind Bella, biting her lower lip as she looked at the unfamiliar man who had carried her brother away earlier.
"He's doing well right now, enjoying a feast, and even said he'd save some for you..." Fu Lin said with a straight face, lying through his teeth in an attempt to reassure Sirin.
