Watching her back, it was hard to imagine what kind of experiments Sirin had undergone in the Tower of Babylon to turn her from a pure angel-like girl into a cold-cruel Herrscher...
Thinking about what might happen in the future, Fu Lin couldn't help but curse Otto in his mind.
But this time, since I'm here, I must stop the tragedy from happening again...
'Ehhh... But can I really stop it with this body?'
Faced with a soul-deep question, Fu Lin fell silent.
--------------------------
"Big brother! Big brother!" Sirin came running back from outside, panting heavily.
"Why are you so excited? What happened?" Fu Lin asked, noticing Sirin out of breath, feeling a bit anxious.
"Everyone said... some medical personnel will arrive tomorrow... Big brother, your illness can finally be treated, and you'll be able to stay with me forever." Sirin excitedly threw herself onto Fu Lin, lying on top of him as she spoke.
'...They're coming so soon,' Fu Lin thought, feeling a chill run through his body.
"Aren't you happy, big brother?" Sirin asked in a small voice, looking at him.
"...Happy? Of course, big brother is 'happy' " Fu Lin forced a smile, but inside he was almost crying, 'Big brother doesn't need treatment. As long as you're happy every day, my illness will be cured.'
"I don't believe you." Sirin pouted, looking at Fu Lin with a teary, aggrieved expression.
"I'm not lying. It's just that if you..." Fu Lin tried to explain when Sirin interrupted him.
"Enough, don't say anymore!"
"Tomorrow, big brother will receive treatment," Sirin shouted, assuming Fu Lin's words were just an excuse to avoid treatment. Wiping away her tears, she ran out of the house, clearly upset.
"Emmm, what did I say wrong?" Fu Lin wondered, baffled by Sirin's reaction.
"Forget it. I'll explain everything to her when she gets back. There's no way I'm going to the Tower of Babylon..."
"This body... Damn it!"
Fu Lin once again felt the weakness in his body. Dizziness overwhelmed him, and he collapsed onto the bed.
...
"Ugh~"
"My head hurts so much! What happened to me?" Fu Lin held his head, feeling as if a thousand ants were crawling inside his brain, the pain nearly unbearable.
"Big brother, you're finally awake!" Sirin exclaimed, gripping his hand tightly, her voice filled with relief.
"Sirin, where is this place...?" As the pain gradually subsided, Fu Lin finally took a good look at his unfamiliar surroundings. Although he had a hunch, he still held on to a sliver of hope as he asked.
"I don't know, but those uncles said they could cure your illness. But..." Sirin's voice trembled, her fists clenched, and she couldn't meet Fu Lin's eyes.
Fu Lin stared blankly at the white ceiling above him, feeling like he needed a sad song to send himself off.
He originally planned to run away with Sirin or outright refuse treatment. He knew Otto well enough; he wouldn't force anyone into an experiment...
But it was too late. His constant fainting spells had left him powerless, and even fate seemed to be against him.
It's just like they say: If it's not a blessing, it's a curse; and if it's a curse, you can't escape it!
"It's all Sirin's fault for not listening to you, big brother... Wuwuwu," Sirin cried as she hugged Fu Lin. She had naively believed that this place could save her brother, but reality was far from what she had imagined.
Hearing the heart-wrenching screams of others and the truth shared by her newly met friend, Bella, Sirin finally realized.
This place was hell.
"It's going to be okay. As long as I'm here, nothing bad will happen," Fu Lin said with a comforting smile, wiping away Sirin's tears. Just then, they heard footsteps approaching.
"Another failure. When will this experiment finally end? Hey, kid, you just got here, can't you chat with me a bit? It makes me look really dumb standing here," a man in a lab coat with glasses complained loudly, then turned to look at his silent colleague.
"..." The person next to him remained silent and expressionless, searching for the keys as they reached the door of the room where Fu Lin was.
"It's really hard to get you to say anything," the man with glasses sighed.
"Big brother, I'm scared," Sirin whispered as she hid behind Fu Lin, staring fearfully at the shadow beyond the door as if a monster was lurking on the other side.
"It's okay," Fu Lin said, trying to comfort her after glimpsing the two men through the glass panel on the door.
"It's your turn," the man with glasses said, opening the door and pulling Sirin towards him.
"Let go of her! I'll go instead," Fu Lin grabbed the man's arm firmly, his eyes resolute.
The man with glasses exchanged a look with his colleague and then released Sirin. "Alright, it's your choice. Doesn't matter whether you die sooner or later."
"Big brother, you can't go. Sirin can do this," Sirin clutched onto Fu Lin's clothes, then declared bravely.
"Be good. It's going to be fine," Fu Lin forced a smile and then followed the men out of the room.
As he walked behind them, Fu Lin's eyes glimmered slightly. He secretly pulled a pocket watch from his system space...
...
"Why is it taking so long to get a test subject? And what happened to him?" A researcher frowned, looking at the two arriving late and then at the unconscious 'Fu Lin' slumped on the shoulder of the man with glasses.
"This kid stepped up on his own. Gotta say, he's got guts. But for some reason, he suddenly fainted halfway here," the man with glasses said, shrugging helplessly.
"Never mind, let's just start the experiment," the researcher muttered, clearly uninterested in further discussion, and began preparing the equipment.
The other man glanced at 'Fu Lin,' who was now tied to the bed. A smirk curled at the corner of his lips before he began injecting the Honkai energy into the body.
But to understand what truly happened, we need to go back to when Fu Lin paused time...
Faced with the two frozen men, Fu Lin hesitated for a moment and ultimately chose the slightly more handsome, silent one.
'I'm definitely not choosing him because he's handsome' Fu Lin justified to himself, 'It's mainly because he's quiet and less likely to expose me.'
He plucked a strand of hair from the man and wrapped it around his finger, then pulled out a lock of his own hair and intertwined it with the man's.
As the hair was swapped, Fu Lin's body began to swell, his appearance gradually morphing into that of the chosen man, while the man's features shifted to resemble Fu Lin.
"Whoa! Looks like the system's customer service didn't lie. This body really has extra features just like the system mentioned, though it's incredibly weak," Fu Lin remarked, smoothing his clothes and picking up the dropped keys. He couldn't help but praise the information displayed on the system screen.
He jumped a few times on the spot, enjoying the feeling of a healthy body. A satisfied grin spread across his face—it was an ordinary physique, but at least he wouldn't collapse out of the blue anymore.
As the time freeze ended, the man, now looking like Fu Lin, stared in bewilderment at the real Fu Lin. His face twisted in terror as he pointed at Fu Lin, seemingly wanting to say something, but before he could, he blacked out.
'...Did he just faint from fright? No, wait, he must be suffering from the illnesses of my original body. No wonder I feel so much better now,' Fu Lin murmured, surprised, as he checked on the unconscious 'Fu Lin.'
"Why did this kid suddenly pass out?" the other man asked, noticing the unconscious figure.
"Probably got too nervous, causing a spike in blood pressure and then a lack of oxygen to the brain," Fu Lin lied without missing a beat, not caring whether his explanation made any sense.
"Such a troublesome brat," the man grumbled, lifting the fake Fu Lin and carrying him into the lab.
"Mission accomplished," Fu Lin chuckled mischievously and ran after the man.
And that's how it all happened. Let's have a moment of silence for the poor 'Fu Lin' on the operational table.
