One after another, the cursed remnants continued hurling themselves onto the point of his spear, as if eager to complete some bizarre achievement he'd call "Divine Skewer."
Of course, before they impaled themselves, most of these cursed beings charged in with the sheer will to obliterate him.
The creatures were as bizarre in appearance as they were relentless in their single-minded drive to kill Gu Sanqiu.
Golden lights flashed as he began deploying high-grade talismans. A spear worked for one-on-one combat, but the sheer number of enemies called for another approach.
The strength of his cultivator lineage shone through as he flung talismans like throwing knives, each one landing squarely on a cursed god's head.
When he encountered creatures that had no heads at all, he simply pulled out a jade amulet, relying on his shield for cover, and rammed the amulet blade-first into whatever could be considered their core.
Meanwhile, back in Liyue Harbor, the Cat Lord of the Medicinal Furnace watched the paper men infiltrate deeper, licking his paw again before letting it fall, lightly tapping the small bell around his neck.
"Who would have thought," he mused, "that a group targeting the Gu family had embedded so many agents here in Liyue?"
Granny Ping gazed thoughtfully toward Yuehai Pavilion. "Ah, Liyue's prosperity is both its glory and burden. The seeds of corruption bloom here just as they once did."
"Back then?" The Cat Lord scoffed. "The boy has some surprising tricks up his sleeve, but he's undoubtedly hiding stronger cards. In an era where gods remain hidden, he might just be the best safeguard we have."
He motioned toward the swarm of paper men below, his tone thoughtful. "If we'd had security like this back then, things might have been different. I wouldn't be in my current state… and more friends would still be here."
"You're right; this is indeed a fortunate era for Liyue."
"A time of life and vibrancy, of hope," he continued with a rare smile.
"It's a marvel to hear you say such things," Granny Ping remarked, gently patting his head, and he let her ruffle his fur this time, partly for the calming effect of the Tranquil Dust Bell's melody.
Perhaps he'd ask the kid later if he had anything for restoring his true form.
"Dragon King's Roar!"
Gu Sanqiu's shield rang with the howl of a dragon. On the Dragon Scale Shield, a miniaturized form of Azhdaha stirred, the presence of the earth dragon spirit causing all the cursed remnants surrounding him to shrink back instinctively.
Boom!
Lines of leyline energy and elemental power crashed into each other, shredding several cursed gods into ash.
The dragon spirit leapt from the shield, and its great tail, swaying like a tree trunk, began to channel pure elemental energy.
"Thunder Formation!"
He smashed his shield into the ground, and arcs of purple lightning shot outward, forming a pattern that carved a formation into the earth.
"Activate!"
Crackling thunder descended from above, smiting countless cursed remnants lured in by their fellow cursed. They faded, burned to ash in the brilliant light of celestial lightning.
"Come on, who's next!"
With a shield in one hand and a talisman in the other, Gu Sanqiu moved with the agility of a seasoned cultivator, ready to face off against the remaining cursed remnants rallying back toward him after the lightning faded.
"Gu family… cursed blood…"
"Kill you, eat you, tear you apart…"
"That reeking scent of incense—die, die, die…"
"Eat me?" Gu Sanqiu sneered. "You'd better have teeth tough enough to try!"
Suddenly, a sharp green light crashed down from the sky. With a force so powerful it tore a massive gash into the ground, scattering cursed gods and carving trenches into the earth from the force of the impact.
Gu Sanqiu blinked in shock.
Did I just… land a finishing move? I was just throwing insults!
Could it be that Teyvat's elemental influence can somehow amplify your trash talk?
"Stick to what you're doing."
A cold, calm voice echoed near his ear. From the clouds of dust, a slender figure stepped forth, wielding a green spear and wearing a fierce mask.
Slice!
With a flash of green, the cursed remnants scattered by the impact were neatly cleaved in two by the spear's arc, their smoky remains dissipating into the air.
"You… you… you…" Gu Sanqiu's voice faltered as he stammered.
The Medicinal Furnace Cat and Granny Ping each broke into a smile back in Liyue Harbor.
"He's here," the cat murmured.
"Yes," Granny Ping chuckled. "I'd wager he's been here for a while, waiting to see what the kid could handle himself."
"With the presence of so many cursed remnants, there's no way he wouldn't show up."
"I said," the masked figure with the spear pointed a finger toward Gu Sanqiu, "do what you need to."
"Got it, boss. Right away, boss!" Gu Sanqiu wasted no time, plopping down cross-legged on the ground, even letting his shield down.
With this particular figure here, he doubted the cursed gods could even touch him!
As the cursed remnants regrouped, the slender figure adjusted his mask, his entire frame radiating a fearsome aura.
"Hoard together—saves me the trouble of tracking you all down."
"Be gone!"
His aura flared as his form blurred, vanishing between the cursed remnants. Red bloodlust and intense elemental power surged around him, and the green spear flashed again and again, tearing through the cursed ranks.
A lone warrior at the heart of a storm, battling on all sides.
Boom!
Explosions echoed in waves as the spear stabbed through the air, bursting with energy that shattered cursed remnants on contact. Some blasts resulted from sheer pressure as the spear split even the land around them into fragments.
"Perish!"
Red light flared in one eye as his movements became even fiercer, each spear strike slicing deeper and faster. Even as some cursed remnants managed to strike him, he ignored the pain, retaliating instantly to pierce his foes in return.
"Wow… is that how he normally fights?" Gu Sanqiu glanced toward the center of the fray, where the warrior's deadly spear play seemed both incredibly effective and terrifyingly ruthless, leaving him with the distinct impression he was watching the leader of these cursed gods at work.
"This can't go on… who knows what sort of butterfly effect this will trigger. I need to finish this quickly!"
Steeling himself, Gu Sanqiu slammed his fist against his heart, biting his tongue to draw blood, which he spat onto the Wraith Bone Brush with a surge of determination.
Buzz!
The brush gave an eerie, throbbing hum, reacting with a fervor beyond what any inanimate object should show as something within it seemed to savor the blood offering.
The color drained from his face, leaving him deathly pale. With the masked figure keeping him safe, Gu Sanqiu channeled the Paper Men Technique without reserve. The paper men moved like soldiers driven by an unholy frenzy, spreading their influence even further.
Paper men who normally remained confined to their desks and records stumbled forth, the bloody tears staining their blank faces. They joined the march, ensnaring and converting even their unsuspecting colleagues.
