The kick connected squarely with Jacob's side, sending him rolling across the dirt. He came to a halt on one knee, his chest heaving, his sword raised defensively. But the cracks spidering along its length betrayed its fragility. Kijich advanced like a storm, his strikes relentless and hammer-like. Each blow drove Jacob closer to the edge of his limits.

Jacob gritted his teeth, forcing himself to focus. Since arriving in this world, his body had adapted to the infusion of faerium within his veins. It had enhanced him, sharpening his reflexes, strengthening his muscles, and granting him unnatural resilience. Yet even with these advantages, he couldn't match Kijich's overwhelming power.

The final crack in his blade gave way under Kijich's next strike, the sword shattering into shards that scattered across the arena. Jacob hurled the remnants aside and backpedaled, narrowly avoiding the knight's follow-up slash.
