Unhesitatingly pulling the sword out of Tinubu, the town head flicked away the purple blood that had stained the jagged black blade.
"I guess I'll have to do it the old fashioned way." The town head muttered. Paying no heed to the badly wounded Tinubu, he made his way towards Tega.
Cautious, Tega retained his usual calm and asked. "Does it involve beheading?"
Sparing a few glances at Tinubu, Tega had hidden worry in his eyes as he chuckled. "I'll prefer it fast than get burnt alive."
"You seem unbothered that the spider sacrificed its life for you." The town head said, failing to notice the worry in Tega's eyes.
With a smirk, the town head dragged the tip of his blade against the ground and taunted. "At the end you thought of it as nothing more than a puny insect right?"
Unfazed by the town head's intimidating aura but irritated by the unbearable noise he made, Tega muttered under his breath. "Spiders aren't actually insects."
"Are you mocking me?!" The town head yelled in response, his eyes becoming bloodshot as he turned his casual walk into a run.
"What if I am?" Tega responded, deeply hoping Lauren would get here soon.
He wasn't hoping for Lauren to get here so he would get rescued. No, he hoped Lauren would get here to save Tinubu's life.
Although he didn't want to die, death wasn't something new to him but he knew how much it would hurt Lauren if Tinubu died and he felt a little guilty.
Appearing in front of Tega in an instant, the town head decisively placed his blade a few inches in front of Tega's neck.
The force the town head had used to move his blade had generated a wind arc which ruffled Tega's hair and sliced up the things by their side.
Surprisingly, Tega's neck was still intact apart from his disheveled hair he was unharmed.
"Your neck could've come off, you know." The town head finally spoke, the rage he previously had being nothing but a mere facade.
Pleased by the town head's display of strength, Tega grinned and replied in a mocking tone. "This should be the time I beg for my life right?"
"Absolutely." The town head nodded, pleased by Tega's compliance. He had failed to notice Tega's mockery and even had thoughts of making the latter's death less painful.
"Well I'm not going to." Tega shrugged, stretching his neck in provocation.
Initially surprised, the town head soon gritted his teeth and cursed. "You little piece of shit."
"But it's all good." He continued. Bursting into a bout of deranged laughter, he grinned after finally calming down. "In ancient times they didn't behead. No, no, no they chopped them in half."
"Not that impressive." Tega replied, his gaze fixed on Tinubu whose condition seemed to be getting worse.
'Where is the fear?' The town head thought, staring at Tega's stoic face.
"Arrrrgggghhhh!!"
Unwilling to stare at that expressionless face for another second, the town head let out a primal roar as he adeptly moved his heavy jagged sword from Tega's neck to the latter's waist.
With little to no resistance, the sword smoothly sliced through Tega's midsection like a hot knife through butter—leaving an extremely smooth cut which was soon cauterized.
"Serves you right." The town head grinned, enjoying the pain that had appeared on Tega's face right before he died.
Poof!
But before both separated halves could reach the ground, they suddenly exploded into a cloud of black smoke.
Surprised, the town head soon caught on what had happened and let out an enraged roar to vent out his frustration.
—
"Thanks for saving me." Tega replied, taking his eyes off the town head who had a blank expression and looking at Lauren who stumbled to Tinubu's side.
Ignoring Tega's existence, Lauren placed his hand on Tinubu's cold body which contrasted greatly to their warm environment.
"I was too late." He muttered, his body trembling slightly as tears slid down the bottom of his mask.
"Arrrrgggghhhh!! Why did you have to go die you idiot?!" Lauren grieved, his voice cracking as he yelled at the top of his lungs.
"Doesn't our contract say we'll be together until our deaths?! So why did you go?!" Angry that he couldn't be by Tinubu's side when it lost its last breath, his mouth trembled as tears flowed without pause. "We agreed to die together, didn't we?"
Although he felt a sting when he saw Lauren's reaction, Tega was unwilling to say he was sorry since it wasn't his fault Tinubu had died and was in fact both their faults.
It wasn't that he lacked empathy he was just not the kind to take responsibility for something he couldn't control nor did he cause.
"He's free now." Tega finally said, finding those words as the only comforting thing he could say to the grieving Lauren.
"No he won't." Lauren replied absent-minded, staring at a blueish wisp which was floating towards the town head's sword.
The town head's sword has clearly stolen Tinubu's soul, not giving the spider the peace it deserved.
"I guess we won't meet in the afterlife." On his feet, Lauren whipped out a pill from his pocket before swallowing it. After he took the pill, Lauren immediately drank the contents of a purplish bottle he had also brought out.
Exhaling deeply, Lauren endured the pain he felt as he stared at the town head who stood rooted on the same spot.
In a few seconds, the pain soon vanished as a sudden feeling of immense strength surged within his veins.
"He can break through illusions easily." Tega warned, wondering what Lauren had in mind after seeing the things he took.
Despite not showing it, Tega actually felt really frustrated due to his weakness, if he had been slightly stronger maybe Tinubu would still be alive.
"Don't get killed. Tinubu wouldn't be happy." Tega added, his fist clenched.
"Who said I'm fighting him with illusions?" Lauren replied, ignoring Tega's other statements.
His tone was distant from the usual playfulness he usually let on, and had a darker edge to it this time.
Clenched his fist, the controlled anger that Lauren had could be felt in his voice as he muttered. "My fist should be strong enough to wake him up."
Close combat not being his specialty didn't equal him being useless when a person got too close. He still had basic knowledge about fist fights and now was the time for him to use it.
Using illusions might have been a quicker way to end it but his anger had led him to irrationality, and the only way to vent his anger was through physical violence.
