Bab 41: CHANGE 41

We were surrounded.

The zombies were closing in, their decayed faces illuminated by the faint moonlight. Some were missing limbs, others dragged their broken bodies across the ground, but their purpose was clear: us.

Panic tightened my chest as I felt Alex shift beneath me. "Nowhere to go," he muttered under his breath, his eyes darting around.

That's when he spotted it.

The subway entrance.

Without hesitation, Alex bolted toward it, his grip on me tightening as he bounded down the cracked, uneven stairs. The sound of the zombies faded behind us, replaced by the echo of his boots on the concrete steps.

But the relief was short-lived.

The staircase was steep and covered in debris, the faint light from above barely enough to illuminate our path. Alex was moving too fast, his footing unsure, and I felt it the moment he slipped.

"Alex!" I gasped as we pitched forward.
