CHAPTER 6
Serene
Neina came to see who was at her door when she heard a knock. I stood in front of her, brokenhearted, carrying my bags and a teddy bear.
She lured me inside after dropping the mop. "What does this mean?" she said as we settled into the coach.
"It is all over for me; Diego has engaged another woman," I said.
Neina was bewildered, so I explained everything that had happened. Neina was enraged, but she had to save it for when she ran into Diego; he did not just injure her buddy.
"Serene I am deeply sorry, but you are now secure with me, and if he ever comes seeking for you, I will break every bone in his body.Naina swore.
"I will be going shortly," I told her.
"What, no, you are in no condition to go already."
"I have been approved for the position we applied for while Diego was in distress."
"Marketing director for KATARAYO AGENCY?"Neina asked
"Yes, they did phone me a few hours ago."
"What!"
Neina leaped with delight and embraced me. We had given up hope of receiving an answer from the agency, but they finally responded.
"I do not believe you should go alone; in fact, I will follow you; I simply do not want to leave you," she mumbled, her face turning bland.
"I will take care of myself; you have a job, remember."
When we finished arranging my room, Neina left to cook dinner while I had a fresh shower and responded to an email from the firm for which I would work.
Neina finished, and we dined together and had a talk to keep us entertained, even though I was not paying full attention because my mind was still preoccupied with what Diego had done.
"Nora is such a devil; she was busy playing saints so wonderfully," Neina explained.
"I could not believe she turned out to be Nelly's best friend; I had been fueling my fall."
"Sorry, I could not be of more help."
"I will grow better and find better stuff later; it is OK."
"Men are so foolish; Diego left a diamond for a stone that once slipped out of his hand," Neina said.
"Perhaps that is my destiny, Neina," I said.
"Serene, you were there when he was ready to commit suicide, and his parents married the two of you in the hopes that he would reform and forget the betrayal. I hope you did not phrase it in a way that implied they were destined."
"He made his decision," I said.
"Perhaps it would be better if his parents were still living. Divorcing you and getting engaged to someone else on your anniversary is foolish and a bad decision."
That voice stunned me, so I just stared at her dish while a tear streamed down my face. Neina rose to her feet, hugged me, and said some encouraging words.
"You are Serene Brights, a beautiful and smart young lady who can stand, wipe away her tears, and shine without the assistance of a guy like Diego."
I said to Neina, "Thank you for always supporting me; I do not know what I would have done without you."
We were about to retire to bed when someone knocked on the door. Neina raced to find out who it was, but was dwarfed by Charlotte, my cousin.
"Charlotte, you are here at this hour."
"Yes, it could not wait; did you see Serene? "I was at her house, but the security would not let me in," she explained, breathing deeply.
"Calm down; Serene is here, but first tell me what happened." Neina questioned her.
"What are you saying, Serene is with you?"She queried, bewildered, because when she arrived at Diego's house, the guards refused to let her in because Nelly had personally ordered that no one from my family visit.
Neina informed her what had happened, leaving her completely stunned. "No, it cannot be," she shouted as she ran to meet me. She answered the door and discovered me taking off my makeup. She rushed to hug me, and I fell into tears again at the sight of Charlotte, my sole family.
"What are you doing here?" I mean, I was supposed to meet you tomorrow.
"Did you think I would wait until tomorrow? There was no way I was going to crush that rascal's head."
"Come down, Charlotte. It is okay," I murmured to her.
"No, you are not. You are all in anguish because of him."
"How were you told about their divorce?"Neina asked her.
"Diego's assistant told me about it."
"George!" I stated.
"Yes, I asked him to get some paperwork for me from the library, but he said he was reading over Brian's divorce papers and I would have to wait until he was done."
We went to bed after a long conversation, and even though I closed my eyes, tears came out.
The next morning, Neina prepared breakfast for me and Charlotte before departing for work. I awakened late and saw Charlotte had already completed her dinner.
She chuckled, "Serene Brights, you appear happy today."
She grinned at me as I switched on the television and heard the newscaster say, "Diego Myers' house was set on fire by unknown criminals who are supposed to be his adversaries, since the tycoon and successful geologist is said to be surrounded by many wolves."
