Bab 2: Chapter 2: The Reactor Demo

Marcus Young had seen many incredible things during his time at Stark Industries. From the cutting-edge artificial intelligence that helped power everyday tasks, to the mechanical marvels of Stark's automated assembly lines, every day at the company was a front-row seat to the future. But the upcoming arc reactor demonstration was on a different level. Rumors had circulated for weeks that Tony Stark was preparing to showcase something extraordinary—something that could reshape not just the company, but the entire world.

Stark Industries had always been at the forefront of innovation, but this was different. This wasn't about weapons or tech for the military. It was about clean energy, about saving the planet. Tony Stark had promised that his miniature arc reactor—the very technology that powered the Iron Man suit—could one day provide virtually limitless energy, clean and sustainable, to the world. It was a lofty goal, but if anyone could pull it off, it was Stark.

The day of the demo, there was an electric buzz throughout the building. Stark had been relatively quiet leading up to the event, a rarity for him. The few employees lucky enough to work directly with him on the project had been sworn to secrecy. Even Marcus, who handled IT tasks in the lower levels of the company, had heard whispers that this was going to be something that would change everything.

Marcus arrived at work earlier than usual, a knot of nervous excitement twisting in his stomach. Today wasn't just another day at Stark Industries. Today, Tony Stark was about to unveil what could be the next chapter in human history. Even though Marcus wasn't involved in the demo itself, the gravity of the moment was undeniable. Stark's breakthroughs always rippled through the company, affecting everyone. Marcus hoped he'd have a chance to see the demo up close, maybe even get a glimpse of Tony himself.

The demo was scheduled to take place in the Stark Industries main testing facility, a state-of-the-art hall designed for high-profile presentations. The room could hold hundreds, but only the most important people would be there in person: engineers, scientists, and VIP guests from around the world. Stark had invited high-ranking officials, foreign dignitaries, and a select group of reporters. Everyone else would watch the event on large monitors throughout the building.

Marcus checked his email as he sipped his morning coffee, still unsure whether he'd even be allowed near the testing facility. As expected, there were no invites for him. He sighed and set his mug down, getting back to the usual grind of server maintenance and routine updates. However, his mind kept wandering to the demo. His work felt insignificant compared to what was about to happen on Level 43.

Around mid-morning, Marcus's supervisor, Dave, popped his head into Marcus's cubicle.

"Hey, Marcus," Dave said, his voice low, as though he were about to reveal something top secret. "Got a minute?"

Marcus looked up from his screen. "Yeah, what's up?"

"IT's needed at the demo for a bit of extra support. They want all hands on deck in case any technical issues come up."

Marcus blinked. This was it. His heart skipped a beat as the implications sank in. He was going to be at the demo.

"Seriously?" Marcus tried to keep the excitement out of his voice. "They need IT support up there?"

"Yeah, don't get too excited," Dave said, smirking. "You'll probably just be sitting in the back, but you'll be in the room."

That was more than enough for Marcus. "I'm in," he said quickly, trying to mask his enthusiasm with a veneer of professionalism.

"Good. Grab your gear and head up to Level 43. Just make sure you're there before the demo starts. Stark's already in the building, so it's gonna kick off soon."

Level 43. The place Marcus had only visited a couple of times for minor tech issues. Now, he was walking into the heart of Stark's innovation, about to witness history in the making.

As Marcus stepped off the elevator, the sheer scale of the testing facility hit him. The room was massive, with sleek, metallic walls lined with holographic displays and workstations that hummed with energy. Engineers were moving frantically, checking last-minute details, while executives and VIPs chatted in small groups, clearly excited about what was to come.

In the center of the room stood a large, transparent containment field that looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. Inside was a massive version of the arc reactor, glowing with a soft, blue light. Marcus had seen smaller versions of the reactor before—most notably the one that powered Iron Man's suit—but this one was something different. It was larger, more powerful, and radiated an energy that seemed to pulse through the air, filling the room with a sense of awe.

Marcus found a seat toward the back, trying to blend in with the other IT staff who were present for support. His eyes kept drifting toward the reactor, its blue glow mesmerizing. Even from this distance, he could feel the weight of the moment. This wasn't just an engineering marvel. It was a symbol of everything Tony Stark represented: power, brilliance, and the possibility of a better future.

Suddenly, the room quieted. The lights dimmed slightly, and a holographic display appeared, showcasing a rotating 3D model of the arc reactor. Moments later, Tony Stark himself walked into the room.

He wore his usual flair—a sharp suit, sunglasses perched atop his head, and that confident, almost cocky smile. The room seemed to respond to him, as though his very presence shifted the energy. Stark moved toward the front of the room, and the crowd parted to let him through. All eyes were on him, and Marcus felt the excitement building inside him. This was the man who had singlehandedly changed the world, and now he was about to do it again.

"Good morning, everyone," Stark began, his voice carrying easily across the room. "Thanks for joining me today. I promise I'll try not to bore you with too many technical details, but if you're here, you know what we're about to show you is a pretty big deal."

There were a few chuckles from the audience, but the tension was palpable. Everyone knew that this wasn't just another Tony Stark presentation.

"Now, I know you're all familiar with the arc reactor technology," Stark continued, gesturing to the massive reactor behind him. "It's the little device that keeps me alive, powers the Iron Man suit, and could one day provide clean, renewable energy to the entire planet."

There was a murmur of appreciation from the crowd. The arc reactor was more than just a technological feat—it was Stark's greatest creation.

"But today," Stark said, turning toward the reactor, "I'm going to show you the next step in that evolution. What we have here is the future of energy, the future of power. This is the full-scale arc reactor, capable of providing enough energy to power a city indefinitely, with zero emissions, zero waste, and zero pollution."

The holographic display zoomed in on the reactor, showing detailed schematics and data that Marcus barely understood. But the core concept was clear. This reactor was bigger, stronger, and more efficient than anything that had come before.

"Now, I know what you're thinking," Stark said, pacing slowly. "How does it work? Is it safe? Can I get one installed in my basement?"

The crowd laughed, but Marcus could tell that Stark was building up to something.

"I'll spare you the details for now," Stark said with a grin, "but let's just say that this is the cleanest, most efficient energy source ever created. And it's scalable. That means, in the not-so-distant future, we could have one of these in every major city, powering the entire world. No more fossil fuels. No more pollution. Just pure, clean energy."

There was a collective gasp from the crowd, and Marcus felt his own breath catch in his throat. The implications of what Stark was saying were staggering. This was more than just a reactor. This was the key to solving the world's energy crisis.

"And now," Stark said, his voice dropping slightly, "for the part you've all been waiting for."

Stark moved toward a control panel near the reactor. "Let's fire this baby up."

He pressed a button, and the reactor began to hum with power. The blue light inside it grew brighter, pulsing with a rhythmic intensity. The room seemed to vibrate with energy, and Marcus felt a strange sensation in the air. It was like standing next to a thunderstorm, the static electricity making the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

For a few moments, everything seemed to be going perfectly. The reactor's glow intensified, the hum becoming a steady, soothing rhythm. Stark looked pleased, his grin widening as the reactor's power output was displayed on the holographic screens. The audience watched in awe as the numbers climbed higher, indicating the immense energy being generated.

But then, something shifted.

A low, almost imperceptible rumble began beneath the floor. It was faint at first, but Marcus noticed it immediately. His eyes darted to the reactor, and he saw something strange. The blue glow inside the reactor was beginning to flicker, almost like a light bulb struggling to stay on. The hum of energy that had filled the room began to change, becoming erratic, unstable.

Tony Stark's smile faded, replaced by a look of concern.

"That's... not supposed to happen," he muttered, his voice barely audible to the audience.

Suddenly, the flickering intensified, and the reactor emitted a high-pitched whine. Engineers in the room scrambled to their workstations, typing frantically, but the situation was rapidly spiraling out of control.

"Shut it down!" one of the engineers shouted.

Stark was already moving toward the control panel, but before he could reach it, the reactor surged violently. A blast of energy erupted from the reactor, sending a shockwave through the room. Marcus was thrown backward, crashing into a nearby desk. Alarms blared, and the lights flickered as chaos erupted in the testing facility.

People screamed as they were knocked off their feet, and sparks flew from the machines surrounding the reactor. The containment field around the reactor began to crackle with energy, struggling to contain the sudden surge of power.

Marcus struggled to his feet, his head spinning. He could feel the raw energy in the air, like static electricity crawling over his skin. The blue light from the reactor was no longer a steady glow—it was erratic, pulsing with dangerous intensity. He could see Stark shouting orders to the engineers, trying to regain control, but the reactor was beyond help.

Then, in an instant, everything went white.

Marcus felt the energy wash over him, a wave of searing heat and light that seemed to pierce through his very being. It wasn't painful, but it was overwhelming, like being caught in a storm of pure power. His vision blurred, and the world around him seemed to dissolve into nothingness.

For a moment, he was weightless, suspended in a sea of energy. He could feel it coursing through him, filling him with a strange, alien sensation. His mind raced, struggling to comprehend what was happening, but there were no answers. Only the raw, unrelenting force of the reactor's power.

Then, as suddenly as it had begun, it was over.

Marcus collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath. The room was eerily silent. The alarms had stopped, the lights had stabilized, and the reactor... the reactor was offline. Stark stood at the control panel, his face pale but composed. The engineers were moving again, checking equipment and assisting those who had been knocked down.

But Marcus couldn't focus on any of that.

His body felt strange, like it wasn't entirely his own. His mind was racing, trying to make sense of the experience, but nothing seemed real. The world felt... different. He felt different.

And as he lay there on the cold floor of Stark Industries' testing facility, Marcus Young realized that his life would never be the same again.
