"Tch, consider yourself lucky," Deidara muttered, dropping his offensive stance. He disliked and was wary of Shin, but he still respected the leader.
After all, the leader possessed the Rinnegan, the "eyes of a god." The only thing Deidara couldn't understand was why the leader seemed to trust this newcomer so much.
As the strongest organization in the shinobi world, the Akatsuki's lineup was absurdly powerful.
Any single member was essentially at Kage level.
In the original story, the Immortal Duo were among the weakest members.
But now, Hidan now called Shin, not only did he retain immortality, but he also had the Sharingan and Wood Release. His combat strength was firmly at the Kage level.
Additionally, the duo of Itachi, the monstrous genius, and Kisame, the steadfast companion, were both solidly Kage level.
The Art Duo, Deidara and Sasori, were relatively weaker but still met the threshold of Kage-level strength.
Then there was Nagato and Konan, along with Obito, disguised as Madara, all unquestionably at Kage level.
With this level of power, if they launched a direct assault on the Hidden Sand, they could potentially collapse the entire village in a single strike.
However, Nagato was an idealist. His goal was to change the entire shinobi world, so the Akatsuki remained in hiding.
At this point, the Three-Tails hadn't yet revived, and the Akatsuki's actions primarily involved intelligence gathering, funding operations, and preparations for future tailed beast captures. They hadn't made any significant moves yet.
Thus, the major ninja villages weren't paying much attention to the Akatsuki for now.
The current Akatsuki was fascinating. Nagato and Konan, as the founders, needed no further explanation.
Kisame, the most loyal member of the organization, was utterly devoted to its cause. Kakuzu, while money-obsessed, had never failed to complete an Akatsuki mission.
As for the others:
Itachi, despite his fearsome reputation, was secretly loyal to Konoha.Orochimaru was a rogue shinobi with his own agenda. The Art Duo were focused on their own artistic obsessions.Obito, the mastermind, was manipulating everything behind the scenes.
Ultimately, the only members truly loyal to the Akatsuki were Kisame and Kakuzu. The rest were all double agents or pursuing their own goals.
Nagato, at first, didn't mind these ulterior motives. As long as the members completed their tasks, he didn't care about their personal agendas.
He believed his absolute power was enough to keep them in check.
However, under Konan's advice, his approach began to shift.
Konan couldn't change Nagato's core ideology, but she did have influence over the "smaller" matters of organizational management. In fact, Konan had always been responsible for the Akatsuki's day-to-day operations.
Shin, formerly Hidan, was a subordinate of Aoba Shokawa. Nagato and Konan were well aware of this.
But precisely because Shin's allegiance was so transparent, he was, in some ways, more trustworthy. At least compared to the others, who concealed their true intentions.
This made Konan inclined to assign Shin more critical tasks.
Moreover, Shin's combat strength was sufficient to handle nearly any mission.
Shin's arrival didn't just add another powerful fighter to the Akatsuki. He also brought with him valuable intelligence from Aoba, including the true identities and capabilities of various Akatsuki members.
Thanks to this, Konan now knew Itachi was a spy, that "Madara" was actually Obito, and even the full mechanics of Obito's Kamui.
This wealth of information gave Konan unprecedented control over the organization.
Shin entered Konan's office.
In Amegakure, Konan's identity wasn't a secret. She was recognized as Nagato's representative and a high-ranking figure in the village.
"Lady Angel," Shin greeted. Normally, Hidan's personality was unruly, but under the influence of Kotoamatsukami, even his behavior had undergone subtle changes.
Following Aoba's orders, Shin treated Konan with great respect.
Shin's backstory painted him as a product of Konoha's Root organization and its human experimentation. During the chaos of the Konoha Crush Plan, he had escaped, even killing two of Konoha's elders in the process.
This act of defection was significant enough to dispel any doubts about his allegiance.
Seeing Shin enter, Konan stood and led him into a concealed laboratory.
Initially, Amegakure lacked its own major research facilities. Small nations like the Land of Rain, caught in the crossfire of larger powers, rarely had the resources or time for such endeavors.
Nagato, too, had never been interested in scientific research. He believed his strength alone was enough to conquer all obstacles.
However, the strain the Rinnegan placed on his body grew heavier over time. Coupled with Konan's persistent persuasion, he finally agreed to establish a research facility for the village.
The lab was newly founded, and its leader was a man named Hiruko—yet another defector from Konoha.
Hiruko had been a contemporary of Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru, graduating from the same academy class. Unfortunately, his talent as a shinobi was mediocre, and he gradually fell behind the pace of the legendary Sannin.
To compensate for his lack of natural ability, he secretly developed the Chimera Technique, a forbidden jutsu. However, he was discovered by the Sannin and forced to flee.
Since then, Hiruko had roamed the ninja world for years.
The Chimera Buds Technique aimed to fuse multiple Kekkei Genkai into one body.
Achieving this goal required not only talent but also vast resources.
Hiruko lacked such resources, and after many years, he had only managed to develop a theoretical framework. Practical application remained entirely out of reach.
The powerful ninjas with coveted Kekkei Genkai were beyond Hiruko's ability to defeat. If he had such strength, he wouldn't have needed to research forbidden jutsu in the first place.
Afraid to challenge the major nations, Hiruko spent his years wandering among smaller villages, gathering resources for his experiments.
Recently, after entering Amegakure, he had been detected by the Rain Tiger at Will Technique. Shin had been the one to capture him.
Nagato wasn't particularly interested in the Chimera Technique. No matter how strong it was, it couldn't rival the Rinnegan.
However, at Konan's insistence, Hiruko was given an opportunity.
Hiruko was particularly eager to study Shin. With his Sharingan and Wood Release, Shin's cells were an unparalleled treasure trove for Hiruko's research.
Konan initially intended to convince Shin to cooperate, but to her surprise, he willingly provided his cells for Hiruko's experiments without complaint.
However, Hiruko soon discovered that Shin's cells were far more complex than he had anticipated. Whatever experiments Konoha had performed on him had resulted in a highly unique body.
These complexities made Shin's cells incompatible with the Chimera Technique.
After several failed attempts, Hiruko gave up on using Shin's cells and decided to return to his original plan: experimenting on individuals with natural Kekkei Genkai.
"I've identified four Kekkei Genkai to target: Swift Release, Steel Release, Storm Release, and Dark Release," Hiruko explained. "I've also pinpointed the locations of shinobi possessing these abilities. I need assistance in capturing them."
