Bab 2: Chapter 2: A Late Start and Rivalry

The Voltorb-shaped alarm clock slams against the wall, its digital display flashing erratically as it leaves a noticeable dent in the plaster. Blaze Ketchum bolts upright, his sharp amber eyes snapping open, instantly registering the urgency. His heart pounds as he glances at the clock—6:30 AM. "No, no, no!" he mutters, his voice low but laced with panic. Beside him, Ash Ketchum scrambles from beneath the covers, his Pikachu-shaped pillow clutched tightly to his chest.

The cozy room of the Ketchum house, usually a sanctuary of warmth and comfort, is now a whirlwind of frantic movement. Ash's hair sticks up in disarray, his eyes wide with alarm. "Blaze, we overslept! The Pokémon!" he shouts, racing to the edge of his bed.

Blaze's voice is urgent as he shoves his younger brother towards the door, "Get moving, Ash! We need to get to Professor Oak's before it's too late!"

The brothers' bare feet slap against the wooden floors, echoing with a rapid, rhythmic urgency. Delia Ketchum's concerned voice drifts from the kitchen, muffled by the chaos. "What's all this noise about?"

Blaze barely registers her question as he hurls himself down the stairs, Ash stumbling in his wake. The rattle of dishes and the clatter of falling objects punctuate their hurried descent.

Bursting through the front door, the cool morning air bites at their faces. The streets of Pallet Town stretch before them, bathed in the first light of dawn. Long shadows stretch across the quiet streets, painting a serene but deceptive picture. Blaze's breath comes in ragged bursts, his competitive spirit ignited by the thought of missing their first Pokémon. He glances sideways at Ash, whose eyes are full of shared desperation.

"We need to make up for lost time!" Blaze urges, his voice cutting through the chill. Their feet pound against the pavement as they sprint through the tranquil town, the peacefulness of Pallet Town contrasting sharply with their urgency. The distant chirps of early-morning Pokémon blend with their labored breaths, a soundtrack of mounting tension.

As they round the corner to Professor Oak's laboratory, the sight of Gary Oak leaning against the wall greets them. Gary's posture is relaxed, his smirk exuding superiority as he stands surrounded by a cluster of supporters, their clapping and cheering amplifying his confidence. Blaze's eyes narrow, his competitive edge sharpening. Ash, still catching his breath, scowls at Gary's smug expression.

"Look who decided to show up," Gary calls out, his tone dripping with mockery. "You're late, as usual. I've already chosen my Pokémon. It's a shame, really. You're already behind."

Blaze's fists clench at his sides, his gaze fixed on Gary's self-satisfied smirk. He doesn't rise to the taunt, channeling his frustration into a steely resolve. Ash, his face flushed with a mix of exhaustion and anger, opens his mouth to retort but is drowned out by the roaring chants of Gary's cheerleaders.

The crowd's enthusiasm only fuels Blaze's determination. He and Ash exchange a look of mutual understanding—Gary's taunts are just another hurdle to overcome. Blaze's mind is already shifting into high gear, plotting strategies and solutions.

As Gary turns away, his entourage trailing behind, he tosses a final taunt over his shoulder. "Good luck catching up!"

Blaze's gaze follows Gary's retreating figure, his jaw set with unwavering determination. Ash's initial frustration hardens into a renewed sense of purpose. Blaze's mind races with strategies to close the gap and prove Gary wrong.

Professor Oak emerges from the lab, his eyes twinkling with a mix of amusement and disappointment. "You boys are just like your father—always running late," he remarks, his tone light but his eyes serious.

Blaze, though chastened, quickly brushes off the guilt. The chance to prove themselves still exists, and he won't waste it. "Professor, is there any way we can still get a Pokémon?"

Oak's gaze shifts to the empty pedestal behind him, where the Poké Balls should have been. His expression softens as he addresses the two brothers. "I'm afraid the Pokémon were already taken by other trainers. But…"

Blaze's heart sinks momentarily before hardening with resolve. "There has to be something we can do," he insists, his voice firm. "We're not leaving without a Pokémon."

Ash nods in agreement, a flicker of hope lighting up his expression despite the setback. Professor Oak studies their determined faces, his own expression thoughtful. After a pause, he finally speaks, "Well, there might be one Pokémon left… but it's a bit unconventional."

Blaze and Ash exchange a glance, their eyes alight with anticipation. Whatever it is, they're ready. Professor Oak's words hang in the air as he heads toward a back room, leaving the brothers on the edge of their seats.

The lab's atmosphere is thick with tension, its high-tech machinery humming softly in the background. Blaze's eyes scan the room, absorbing every detail—the sleek consoles, the scattered research notes, the air charged with the weight of possibility. The two brothers are poised on the brink of their journey, the stakes higher than ever as they await the next chapter of their adventure.
