Bab 236: Breaking Through the Defense

A familiar situation, but it was clear Lance had no intention of repeating past mistakes.

Adjusting his diagonal sprint, he shifted into a lateral move. Seeing cornerback Mills break free from Chiefs receiver Hill's blocking and rush back into position, Lance made his next move.

Mills, recovering quickly, stepped forward and charged at Lance.

Just as the tackle seemed inevitable, Lance hit the brakes, halting his momentum and veering left along the horizontal axis.

Mills, unwilling to let his prey escape, launched into pursuit.

Then—

Crash.

Mills had barely taken two steps before colliding with the oncoming Barnett, who was also tracking Lance. Both defenders wobbled as their balance faltered.

Barnett, completely focused on Lance, hadn't noticed Mills until the impact. He reached out to grab Lance, but his stumble left him a second too slow. Lance darted past him like a shadow.

The stunned Barnett could only watch as Lance escaped his grasp.

"Damn it, damn it, damn it! Tricked like a bull by a matador!" Barnett raged internally, but Lance didn't spare him a second glance.

His mind remained sharp, quickly registering linebacker Kendricks closing in and safety Jenkins ready to pounce. The defensive net was tightening.

In a fleeting moment, Lance exchanged a glance with tight end Kelce.

The brief connection spoke volumes. Kelce, initially set to block Mills, pivoted and stepped forward, positioning himself as an obstacle directly in Jenkins' path.

A brief pause.

The slight disruption was all Lance needed. Slipping past Jenkins' flustered reach, Lance cut sharply left at a sixty-degree angle.

Jenkins lunged, managing to graze Lance's shoulder, but his unsteady stance robbed him of the strength to finish the tackle. Lance broke free once more.

Straight ahead, Lance collided head-on with Kendricks.

No sidestepping. No finesse. Just pure power.

Crash.

The impact left Kendricks breathless, unable to bring his arms up in time as Lance rebounded and veered right.

The path he carved resembled a bold, slashing "Z".

Just when it seemed Lance had broken free, Jenkins showed why he was having a standout game. The safety, a maestro of defensive reads, had been the thorn in the Chiefs' side all night.

Even after colliding with Kelce, Jenkins rebounded swiftly, tracking Lance like a homing missile. Seizing the moment as Lance and Kendricks clashed, Jenkins lunged forward—

A solid hit disrupted Lance's balance.

The plan was simple: destabilize Lance, then close the gap and bring him down.

At least, that was the plan.

Instead, Lance used Jenkins' hit to propel himself forward.

He stumbled but didn't fall.

His feet pounded the ground with unrelenting force, his high knees helping to stabilize his body as he absorbed the impact.

One step.

Two steps.

The 35-yard line was now in sight.

Despite all the chaos, Lance had barely covered ten yards, but those ten yards felt like a war. Now he was closing in on the first down.

Closer.

Even closer.

The tension was palpable. Though Lance couldn't see behind him, the pressure was tangible—Jenkins wouldn't give up. Ahead lay open field, with only safety Rodney McLeod standing between him and glory.

Determined, Lance braced himself.

Plant. Push. Lift.

He lifted his legs in powerful strides, his core tight, ready for the incoming blow.

Boom.

Jenkins hurled himself forward, his entire body slamming into Lance.

But Lance, prepared for the impact, absorbed the hit and, incredibly, used it to propel himself further. His pumping legs hit the ground like pistons, generating even more speed amidst the collision's chaos.

Step. Step. Step.

Against all odds, Lance regained his balance and surged forward.

The crowd at Arrowhead Stadium erupted, witnessing an impossible sequence of events.

35-yard line.

40-yard line.

45-yard line.

The stadium was electric, a symphony of heart-pounding excitement and disbelief. The sight of Lance breaking free and accelerating was like a spark igniting a powder keg.

And just like that, Lance crossed midfield.

Bart choked on his words, nearly falling out of his chair as ESPN commentator Pasch's voice echoed through the broadcast.

"45-yard line!"

"40-yard line!"

"McLeod! Rodney McLeod is the Eagles' last line of defense!"

Pasch's excitement boiled over, his voice cracking as he narrated the drama. Having followed Lance's journey since Alabama, he knew exactly what this moment meant.

Meanwhile, Bart's heart felt like it was about to explode.

"Stop him! McLeod, stop him!"

All eyes fixated on the field, where two figures hurtled toward destiny.

McLeod, an undrafted rookie in 2012, had carved out a steady, if unspectacular, career. Elevated to starting safety this season, he had proven his worth through consistent performances.

Now, the weight of the game rested on his shoulders.

McLeod stared down Lance, who was closing in at an alarming speed, exuding the focus and ferocity of a charging predator.

Beneath his helmet, McLeod's knees began to tremble.

"Oh my God…"
