While Qi Chao mused about the qualities that illuminated the heroine Julie, and what Chi Yu might admire in her, Chi Yu's thoughts drifted back to how she had first encountered the film.

"I think I was twelve. I'd fallen ill and was hospitalized, though the reason eludes me now. In the adjacent room was a beautiful young woman who adored this film, recommending it to anyone who would listen. It was then, for the first time, that I watched it and saw Julie."

The film had already been out for five years by that point.

Most viewers focused on the young male lead's striking looks or the childhood romance between the protagonists. 

Yet Chi Yu's attention was riveted from the outset on Julie's bravery and resilience, which belied her age.
