Fable had some misgivings about this and pondered for a bit. "You really did a number on me. That hurts..." he sighed, gazing seriously. Mythica laughed, then casually swung her blade towards Fable, having it imbued with her resonance power.
Fable looked stunned. It was just a casual swing, yet it held a force behind it that outclassed her earlier area-wide attack with her sword. He had to repeat the use of the flower bud rune ability, but this time it shattered, blowing Fable away. Thankfully, though, it blocked 90% of the force.
Fable coughed up some blood and then wiped his mouth. Mythica wasn't done yet; she decided to play a bit, and soon the situation became like a predatory creature toying with its catch.
She didn't take Fable seriously and would let him use whatever he wished, but she would break his defense or simply slash away at the attacks he used. Zenith's eyes narrowed in controlled anger. To him, this girl was on Aleren's side; they saw themselves as the forces of good in this life, but to Zenith, he knew deeper than them that they were simply golden spoon-fed children, given the best of the best. If they couldn't even do this, then it would have been a waste.
Mirabell looked worryingly; she gently tugged on Jenabell's arm. Jenabell remained silent, not speaking a word as she gazed carefully, thoughtful. Lieutenant Amada had to ask for extra support, and now beside her, several of her colleagues were present. "Should we stop it?" one of them spoke, a man with a narrow face like a hawk.
"We can't do anything unless someone is about to die, or if one side gives up. From what we are seeing, she's just toying with him, but he hasn't given up either," another replied, a woman with average appearance and a bit older than Amada.
The crowd was going crazy again as they watched this happen. Fable was being bounced around the arena and trying to dodge all her attacks. Mythica, though, didn't take it seriously and chased after him with no rush. "Incredible, my first time seeing an unleashed resonance! Lady Mythica truly is a top-tier fighter of our federation. With her and the others on the front line, we can match the other factions!" a man leading a small relic organization spoke up excitedly.
A female sighed in awe. "I hope Lady Mythica one day decides to teach or seek followers. I'll gladly follow her to the end! Once she and Sir Aleren marry, she will truly be a Queen!" The final word caught the crowd's attention as they began to call her Queen Mythica.
Mythica stopped for a moment from toying with Fable, listening to the words. She smiled with joy and pride. She raised her weapon in a show of victory, the crowd cheering more. "That's right, I'm a Queen. Only I can stave off the threats of the federation with my love Aleren." She then looked at Fable, who was weakly getting up and dusting his tattered outfit a bit.
"I have to thank you. It's been really bothersome to find opponents who can push me this far to activate my ability's latent effect." Fable raised his head and looked at Mythica with some interest. "Latent effect, huh. Since you found little ol' me tucked away at this relic outpost, what's your real intention with this fight? I'm sure it's not as simple as some pride crap."
Mythica chuckled softly. "That's right, Fable Novaforge. I was looking for anyone able to push me to my limit, injure my body and pride enough, so once I activate my Unleashed resonance, the latent effect will make me stronger. This effect will carry over even when my Unleashed resonance fades."
Fable looked stunned, listening a bit. "That's a nasty ability you have, but what's the catch? There's always one." Mythica nodded. "My ability will always know if I am taking a fight seriously or not; it will know if the battle is genuine or faked. I can't ever get a boost effect from the same opponent, nor can I trick my ability. After each use, I will lose all my resonance power as if I was a normal human until it recovers. The stronger I am, the more time needed for it to recover. Last time I used it, it took 1 year."
Fable nodded. Right as he did, Mythica appeared in front of him, punching towards him and causing Fable, who barely had time to block, to go flying several meters, a heavy burn mark on his abdomen. He coughed again, his organs hurting quite a bit. "Ow... that one really hurt..." Mythica, with her wings, hovered over.
"Now that I got what I wanted and taught you a lesson to know your place, this fight is over. The other thing I'm looking for is the deal I made with your grandmother when you lose."
Fable, panting heavily as he sat on his butt and wiped his forehead from soot, looked up and asked. Jenabell then snickered and pointed her blade towards Fable again, energy leaking from it. "She will have to kneel down in front of me and apologize to me."
As everyone was talking about what Mythica was speaking of, their voices clearly heard by the crowd as who wouldn't want to hear what was going on, Mythica's ability, explained by her, awed everyone. Some called her a monster with endless potential; many envied and admired her.
To everyone here, this battle was an obvious win for her. Zenith, though, kept faith in Fable. He knew from his own understanding that Fable wasn't like this. To Zenith, if Fable could cast low and some medium-level rune abilities with no incantations, what could he do with incantations? What rune abilities did he know that he held as the strongest he understood?
When Mythica continued to speak and finally got to the part about Jenabell having to kneel down after Fable lost, Jenabell sighed with annoyance. "Uh oh... now she's done it..." Not a moment later, an eerie silence fell upon Mythica. She felt a feeling of impending doom; she saw Fable raise his head, a dark look on his face, his eyes bloodshot, seemingly piercing right into the fabric of her being.
"You want my grandma to kneel to you, huh?" Fable's lips curved widely. Mythica's instincts knew that something bad would happen if she didn't end this. She suddenly prepared to slash down, but Fable was faster. A pillar of yellow light shot from the left of Mythica and pierced straight through her left wing. Mythica screamed in pain and fell down from the pain and shock.
She was stunned. "T-that's a high-level rune ability, Light Ray... how can you cast that instantly?!" She was furious and stunned.
Fable ignored her as he stood up. "I can do a lot of things you can't... but right now, I'm going to pluck every feather you got, Miss flying chicken." Fable laughed casually, waving his hand casually in an arc. All sorts of things seemed to happen; rune abilities of variants appeared, from more light rays to twisting darkness and wailing beings.
"NO!" Mythica, frightened out of her wits, screamed. She gripped her weapon with both hands and stood up, swinging it with all her force towards Fable. Soon the abilities clashed. Mythica's attack was dispersed after several high-level rune abilities negated it. Then several others shot towards her, petrifying her right leg, piercing her left leg, cutting off her right hand.
Mythica was now on the floor, bleeding profusely, panting as she was holding on due to the power of her unleashed resonance and its healing ability. Fable sighed a bit. "Wow... this is really all you amount to... Didn't that Aleren kid in the end have to use his resonance ability to beat you? It's a shame I didn't have enough credits to buy the clip of his fight. Oh well. In the end, I guess you're trash, right? Losing to me, someone who doesn't even have a resonance ability I can use in battle, or an unleashed resonance ability."
Mythica glared, her face covered in cuts, blood leaking from her lips. "B-bullshit... you're a fucking monster... what the hell is your ability..." Fable laughed quietly. "My ability? I just hoard whatever I don't use; I know it will be useful one day."
Mythica clenched her teeth in fury, her energy surging. "Still got some fight left in you, Miss flying chicken? That's good." Mythica gritted her teeth and called out, "You're simply some lowly piece of shit from a fallen organization! You and your damn grandma, all you Novaforge are trash!!" Her fury and temperament not even leaving out any attempt at wanting to negotiate. She had always been raised fiercely; she would only be gentle when it had to do with Aleren.
"Heh..." Fable spoke soundly. It was then that Mythica saw him walk away before he turned to look at her again, his head tilting a bit. "You know what? I don't want your money anymore. You're an eyesore..." Mythica's body shuddered; deep fear suddenly overwhelmed her. It was because she was listening to the incantation of the rune ability Fable was using.
"I Sleep & I Eat, I Dream & I Speak, I Cry & I Scream." The entirety of the arena began to shake; the forcefield cracked, and pieces began falling out. Cracks surged towards the ground of the crowd, who looked afraid. Zenith's heart skipped a beat. This feeling was something he had never felt before; it was like looking at a meteor falling straight towards you.
A vortex of darkness covered the ground around Mythica, extending in all directions. Mythica was frightened. This was a Rune ability known only by a relic at the relic syndicate leader level, and even then, most of them didn't know it. Before Fable could speak up in response and the ability could activate, a torrent of pure resonance energy flooded the entirety of the arena chamber and crashed down towards the darkness, destroying the ability.
A man stood in front of the wounded Mythica, sighing softly. "Geez... kids these days, stick to the damn rules..." It was the commander of the relic outpost, having felt the large energy and being begged by his subordinates to interfere.
"Fable Novaforge wins! All you rabble, clear out!" he ordered, his voice booming across to everyone with great force. This man was someone of immense strength; on this relic outpost, he was the strongest.
Hello, i hope you all have been enjoying my novel. i would appreciate it if you had spare powerstones, if you could help by voting so more readers can see my novel :D!
Fable was currently lounging in the medical section of the relic outpost, nonchalantly sitting with his legs up. On either side were his family and Zenith. "Brat, you went a little bit too far, you should have ended it sooner," Jenabell berated, but inside she was pleased to have Mythica beaten in such a way.
"Come on, grandma, either way I got the job done. It really was hard to push myself to hurt a babe like that." Mirabell grumbled a little, a "Dun Dun!" tune escaping her body as she reached over and tugged on both of Fable's cheeks as he screeched in pain.
"Heh, you made us a windfall at least. Good job." Fable laughed with a soft smile. Jenabell, though, wanted to humble him a little bit. "Seems like Zenith really is our golden ticket. Since he joined, it's been nothing but good luck for Allspace." Fable was dumbfounded. "W-wait a minute! It was me!" he complained.
Zenith laughed bitterly, clearly understanding what Jenabell was doing. "Miss Jenabell, I saw quite a lot of applications in the Allspace inbox. Is this because of Fable's strength?" he asked with curiosity.
Jenabell thought for a moment. "Well kid, that's half of it. But earlier today, Scorpius said it would no longer hound any potential members. You never got contacted by them since you were always beside us; those bastards never got a chance."
Zenith had been curious about Scorpius for a while, so he asked, "What did Scorpius really want from Allspace?" Jenabell was silent for a moment, then spoke up, Mirabell's and Fable's faces somber. "We were forced into debt by them with heavy interest. The only way we could pay it off was with certain materials we couldn't get, or give them all the information from Allspace's database. Imagine how useful that would be for a B-rank relic hunter organization, having the database of an A-rank organization."
Zenith was a little confused. "I thought information was freely shared? Why would they try that hard for it?" Jenabell laughed softly. "Kid, don't get it mixed up. Everyone has their tricks and secrets; who would freely want to share stuff with everyone? Allspace has many secrets of locations they haven't had a chance to explore yet. Right now, we just aren't strong enough. Why would we let others take our food?"
Zenith finally understood now. "So with Mythica having lost, because of the deal, I'm guessing those behind her settled the matter with Scorpius, and new applicants don't have to worry anymore," summarizing his thoughts to her.
Fable snickered a bit. "Those Scorpius bastards won't give up so easily. Sure, on the surface they've given up, but they are just gonna plan for what they do from the shadows and observe a bit."
Jenabell reached over, tugging on Fable's ear. "We'll be lucky if no one comes to cause trouble for what you did to that girl." Fable yelped in pain. "G-grandma, OW!!!" Zenith and Mirabell smiled a bit.
Jenabell then stood up from her seat. "Darling, let's go. We need to go review the applicants and plan ahead. Zenith, I was hoping this would be wrapped up easier, and we could do consecutive relic sites. But judging from how things are, the materials we used for the outfits may not even be enough. Thankfully, the credits and materials won as collateral will help a lot. But right now, we need to put it on hold and catch ourselves up a bit. You will need to fill in your time a little."
Zenith nodded, watching Jenabell and Mirabell leave before gazing at Fable. "Being able to cast those incantations for rune abilities instantly..." Fable then interrupted him, his hands behind his back nonchalantly. "Cause I'm the true genius in this galaxy, not those new generation dumbos," he sneered jokingly.
Zenith bitterly laughed and shook his head. He knew it had something to do with Fable's resonance ability, and he wouldn't give any secrets out, so he spoke, "I actually made a bet on you too. I collected it after the battle. An unused F-rank teleporter device." Fable whistled a bit. "Nice. Hopefully, you got one that doesn't lead you to a useless place." Zenith blinked a little, surprised, asking Fable to clarify.
"Well, if every teleporter device led to somewhere cool, then the federation and other factions would be swimming in resources. But the chances of a teleporter not leading to a useless, let's say empty spot with nothing there special, stops that. Out of every teleporter device, only 5% lead to places that may have value, and I stress the word 'may' quite a bit."
Zenith's eyebrow twitched a bit, laughing at his foolishness. "Well, wish I knew that before. Oh well, I'll have to hope. It's sort of like gambling." Fable tried to comfort him a bit. "Don't worry, Allspace is going to grow, and you will make quite a lot. It's our fault for not telling you this sooner since we were the ones who handled the purchasing of teleporter devices. What rank is yours?"
Zenith spoke up. "It's estimated to be White Wolf." Fable seemed a little thoughtful. "Well, with your current strength, you should be able to handle White Wolf easily as long as you don't seek danger and stay close to the teleporter device. A rule of thumb for those useless spaces: they have a tendency to only be the size of around 15 to 30 meters, with simple flat surfaces of rock or whatever."
Zenith was considering some things. "I have hopes that I'll get lucky. You never know, if it's something decent, I could sell it." Fable scoffed a bit. "No way! We're family, aren't we? Allspace will help you. Just give us a 20-30% cut of whatever. Or you can wait for Grandma to fix things and me to recover; we can explore it together." Looking at Zenith, he could see the eagerness in his eyes. "Fine, fine, I know that look. You do what you need to do. Just make sure you tell Grandma about it first, so nothing goes wrong. Also, you have to purchase protection rights from the relic syndicate here; otherwise, if anyone entered teleporter devices willy-nilly and something bad happened and escaped, it would be pandemonium."
Zenith nodded. "I'm in no rush. I'll purchase some things first." Fable smiled, then raised his device up and sent some information to Zenith. "I've sent you a list of low-class rune abilities and my experience with them. Usually, you would need to pay a hefty sum to access these from the federation as they are encrypted. But these ones are made by the seniors of Allspace, for our members only. Don't even think about sharing them," Fable raised an eyebrow.
Zenith looked at his device excitedly and nodded. "Thank you." After he finished, a female nurse came over; she was quite gentle-looking. Fable's eyes gleamed. "Oh, here comes the best nurse in the world! I'm really smiled upon by fate to have you look after me!" quickly playing his smooth moves. The nurse giggled a little, Zenith, of course, rolling his eyes. "Mr. Novaforge, it's time for the routine checkup."
Fable sighed a little. "Please be gentle, I'm such a tender flower, I can't handle pain," he jokingly added. Zenith sneered and spoke up, "I'm leaving, I'm leaving!" unable to handle his words anymore before heading off to leave Fable with his fun.
Zenith first went to retrieve his won bet, which was already transferred to a protected sealed locker where all winning bets were sent. Officially, this was the best way; anyone that tried to cheat would be punished heavily.
The ID bank card, Zenith inserted into his device and transferred the funds, making the card useless as he then threw it away. He then looked at the teleporter device inside the locker; it felt a little eerie. He gently picked it up, holding it with both hands. It was surprisingly light, and despite its surface, felt smooth to touch.
"If I need to become strong, I need to handle things alone. It's risky, but it's also the quickest path." For Zenith, he had long made up his mind. He would one day seek revenge for his father and make it so his mother and sister could rely on him and not have to beg.
After taking the device, he made his way back to the freighter. He noticed a small crowd of people lining up; Jenabell glaring a bit as she sat at a desk placed outside. She seemed a bit annoyed as she looked at all the files on her device.
"Looks like we are gonna need a bigger ship or a home base at this point," she seemed quite annoyed. Yet in her mind, she had a bigger concern she had to hide: the fact that Fable's strength had been revealed. Having defeated Mythica, who had used an unleashed resonance whilst Fable seemingly relied on rune abilities he could instantly cast, would make him a golden target for those peak organizations to pester until he accepted their offers.
