Bab 32: Chapter 31: Gold Claws

'I get rewarded for observing Canon Events?', Miles thought. His eyes lit up, not expecting to receive such a hefty reward from his system. His eyes remained on the brown-haired boy still dressed in a red robe, frantically running away from the estate. Miles soon saw another neatly-dressed boy with a determined look in his eye run away from the courtyard, trying to catch up to the brown-haired boy. The two boys were running at a fast pace, fleeing the scene of what had just happened to them. After all, they were literally running away from a murder scene. And the brown-haired boy just killed the groundskeeper, who was supposedly his real father.
Shifting his gaze, Miles's eyes landed on the giant estate in the far distance. His eyes were much sharper than a human's and could see well in the dark. Miles observed a young maid dashing out of the estate, trying to find where the two boys ran off to. After pausing for a moment, she decided on a direction. Lifting up the hem of her dress, she too sped off toward the two boys. She seemed young and proper, around the same age the brown-haired boy was.
Unbeknownst to the two boys and the maid, they weren't alone. A fox, who was about three feet in size now, was observing them from afar, resting inside the shadows of a pine tree in the distance. This fox's fur was no longer onyx black and glossy. The fox's fur was gray now with tattered, white spots. The underside of the fox's belly was a mix of brown-orange with white fur. A large black stripe went down from the fox's head all the way down to the tip of the fox's tail. The iconic characteristic that separated Gray Foxes from other known species of foxes.
This fox underwent a species evolution thanks to the system he received. Miles was no longer a Silver Fox. He was a Gray Fox. And he is now in his adolescent stage. The next one to come was likely an adult form.
Miles recalled that he needed to spend seven months to let his body reconstruct itself from the inside out. He wondered if that required time had a variance depending on what species he selected. If he decided to evolve into his same species, the Silver Fox, would he still need that seven months?
It was something to test out for sure whenever his next evolution will be. Miles was able to get his bearings after the First Evolution finished, and some days have passed since. His stock of meat was extremely low now, requiring him to go out hunting. Unexpectedly, before Miles could go out hunting again, his system triggered an Emergency Mission, Persuade the Wolverine.
The system wanted Miles to persuade the future Wolverine to come back together inside his own burrow no less!
Miles was still hesitant to head toward the Howlett Estate, but after checking over his system gains after evolving, he was confident enough to do so now. Before he did that, Miles decided to spend a few days burrowing further inside his home, the Tree of the Divine Fox. It caused his Burrow proficiency to increase by a couple levels, but it was not enough to reach the max level yet. His burrow was now large enough to fit a couple people inside of it besides him.
After making sure his home was in a good state, Miles swiftly left it, and ran up the large hill, avoiding the entire town altogether. He could squeeze in around it, and ran up the hill from the backside. Once he reached the tree he was now observing from, he saw the beginning of the Wolverine movie play out before him.
Not only did the system recognize this event playing out as a canon event, it even rewarded Miles for it! Miles knew this wasn't the only canon event that Earth-10005 had to offer. Anticipation appeared in his eyes just thinking of what was to come. The next major event to take place is the first world war, which would plunge the entire world into chaos.
In response to his anticipation, Miles's tail started to thump happily.
He continued to observe the ongoing scene. James was running through the forest erratically. Tree after tree was passing by in a blink of a second. The second boy Victor was quickly catching up to him. If it went like the comics, it would be Rose who took away James from here instead of Victor. From Miles's view, it looked like it was playing out closer to the movies, but there was a new variable now. The maid, Rose. It was either or, and not both. Perhaps with his existence, it is causing the story to twist to where the trio would flee instead?
Miles wasn't sure. He could only watch on for now, and strike when the iron was hot as one would say. Now wasn't the time yet for him to interfere. The system only asked him to persuade Wolverine. It had no say in persuading the other to follow after Miles. Now on the surface, that didn't mean the system didn't. Miles wondered if there was any hidden criteria he could potentially trigger as part of this Emergency Mission. What would happen if he persuaded all three to follow him instead?
Seeing as he still had a few moments before Victor caught up with James, Miles decided to have another review of his gains. He did see that he gained a level, and it went as expected to other fantasy stories that he often read about. Each time an evolution would occur, his levels would reset back down to one. And this time, he needed twice the amount of experience per level!

Miles stared at his status window in silence. It really was a far cry since he was first brought into this world. All of his stats have greatly improved over this half a year!
And out of the entire window, Miles knew his Protean skill was busted. His damage multiplier was no longer three times his strength stat, but five times now thanks to the Skill Upgrade. And it even had the potential of upgrading even further. That was one of the main reasons he decided on evolving into a Gray Fox. He wanted to be strong enough to take care of any obstacles thrown his way. He couldn't run away forever.
And him receiving an option to upgrade his Innate Ability was just icing on the cake. While Miles spent his time burrowing to extend his burrow, he cracked open the Steel Claws Upgrade Scroll. Upon taking it out, he saw the name had changed once his Innate Ability evolved. He could upgrade his Innate Ability Twice in one go! Miles was ecstatic that this could happen. It secured his survivability even more. It was a shame he had no other upgrade scrolls to test this, but if he came across one in the coming future, he may hold onto it.
Miles's Innate Ability upgraded from Steel Claws into Silver Claws. And then a second time from Silver Claws to Gold Claws. Just as their names implied, it wrapped silver and golden hues around his claws, making them much more sharp and dangerous. Miles wondered if they had the element itself to back up how tough his claws were now. Could he slash gold in half with his claws now?
Wondering about such a possibility, Miles had a look at his new Innate Ability, and it was even more broken than Protean II. It looks like Miles gained a new ability each time it was upgraded!

-Effect 1: 100% DMG during day, 150% DMG during night (No longer bound by claw attacks)
-Effect 2: 100% DMG against supernatural creatures. Chance to cleanse poison = LUC%.
-Effect 3: 10% of total damage dealt is recovered as Health.
And it didn't just stop there. Miles's level up also provided plenty of new benefits for him. It no longer boosted Strength by 4, Endurance by 4, and Agility by 2. It jumped quite high. On top of that, it would seem Miles's current species affected how many points were awarded to him too. Each level up would now give Miles 50 HP, 30 Stamina, 25 Strength, 10 Endurance, and 15 Agility. Each level up also granted twenty additional stat points. Before he realized it, Miles had 93 extra stat points to use!
If Miles decided to launch an attack with Smoldering Claws and factored in all of his new boosts, he could potentially dish out 545% of his attack. And if that was a Lucky Strike, that could deal a whopping 745% damage!
Now with Protean II, Miles could deal over 30,000 damage. He was already excited about dealing over three thousand damage before, but now he could almost do ten times that!
'Can I take down a bear like this on my own now?', Miles wondered as he continued to observe Victor chasing down James.
