'These twenty days were well spent.', Miles mused. His stats went through an explosive growth during this period of time. He portioned off his current stacks of geese meat, and now he only had one left before his entire stock was gone. It was almost time to go hunting again.
Miles wasn't idle during this time either. He would adventure out, work on leveling up his skills, and continue reading his books that were given to him by his system. After the first week passed, his knowledge on the X-Men as a whole became much more consolidated. Especially what will come to pass in the coming future.
In simple terms, Miles was on borrowed time. Even if he didn't do anything for the plot during his stay here in Earth-10005, it would get torn to shreds. Literally.
The timeline will cease to exist thanks to the actions Wolverine and the X-Men will take in the 21st century. It would also end up destroying most of the mutant population along the way. A tragedy that they would like to avoid at all costs. To counteract that, those who were left alive found ways to travel back in time. They did actually succeed in doing so, but it led to a consequence of them wiping out their existing timeline. A new one formed after travelling back to the past.
When Miles was brought here during Year 1896 in Cold lake, these time-travelling shenanigans had not taken place yet. Barely anyone knew that mutants existed right now. And Wolverine was one of the earliest mutants to be born.
So even though this world was destined to fall apart, Miles still had time to grow. He didn't have to make an immediate decision on what to do of what was to come in the future. For now, he will see if he can encounter Wolverine when he flees from his estate.
On a more pressing matter, it was almost time for Miles to undergo his First Evolution!
He obtained a little over three thousand experience points, which pushed him to almost the required amount, Level 10. He needed less than 50 points to reach his requirement. Miles didn't know if he could level beyond level 10, and he was about to see what would happen.
Once the next dusk approached, Miles set off from his burrow, and found a wild dog digging around for potential critters to hunt. It wasn't like a domesticated dog like his past life had, but closer to that of a hyena. It was very dirty-colored looking, and had very big ears. Bigger than his own. Thankfully it wasn't rabid.
Seeing a wild dog like this though did strike a nerve against Miles's emotional state. He used to own a dog in his past life. But he knew that life was no more and was starting to develop the characteristics that a fox has. He saw this wild dirty-colored dog as prey. He didn't hesitate to lash out at it. During the latter half of the twenty days that have passed, Miles's attention has shifted to leveling up his attack skills, the very few that he had. Flames burst open over Miles's fangs, and the atmosphere around him became hot. Wooosh!
A whine escaped from the wild dog's mouth feeling a searing pain crunch against the base of its neck. Miles took a large bite without hesitation. The dog was the same level as him, Level 9. But by catching the wild dog off guard, the wild dog couldn't even react in time before the light in its eyes dimmed. Its body slumped over in place. A huge damage number appeared over the wild dog's eyes as Miles heard another level notification for Fire Fang. It was now Level 9, one level away from becoming maxed, just like his other skills.
At level 8, it did a total of 220% damage, and at level 9, it did 230%!
[-3455!]
The wild dog's health instantly depleted, letting Miles kill it in one shot. This dog wasn't anything like the geese he had fought before. It had a total of two thousand health points! If Miles didn't spend his time power leveling these last 20 days, he probably wouldn't be able to take on this dog and kill it in one blow. It would have been a struggle.
'Sorry, but I need to survive out here just like you were trying to, bud. I'll just do a silent prayer for Bucky...', Miles inwardly thought for a moment, sending off the dog he used to own in his past life. He wasn't sure if he'd be a dog owner in this life, considering he's a fox and all. Perhaps one day.
After his moment of silence passed, Miles looked at the dead dog before him. Its corpse was starting to bleed out onto the snow, so Miles knew he had to act quickly.
'Still, that Protean Skill is nuts. If I didn't have that, it would have just done a little over 500 damage plus the dog's max health....That skill really helped me secure the kill.', Miles mused.
Placing his paw over the dead dog's body, Miles's system suddenly activated on his own. It acted the same way to the geese he killed. The dog's body started to disappear before his very eyes. Following that, notifications began to sound off inside his mind.
[Ding! Uncommon Wild Dog Meat x2 has been obtained. Related skills triggered. 150 EXP obtained.]
[Ding! Host's level has risen to level 10.]
[Ding! Host has met the criteria for First Evolution.]
'Finally!', Miles inwardly exclaimed. At long last, he finally reached Level 10!
"Yip!", Miles happily yipped. Thankfully no other wild animal was in the vicinity to see Miles jump onto his back, rubbing his fur into the snow. This dusted off his fur, albeit not as good as jumping in the lake did. He made sure not to get any blood splatter on him this time as he caught that wild dog off guard. All of its blood splattered onto the snow instead. And now, a red blotch remained with its body nowhere to be seen.
Miles happily trotted away after playing around a bit, making his way back inside his burrow. It was still early in the night and Miles still had plenty of stamina to spare. He could still hunt if he wanted to, but seeing a (-) over his experience points now, he knew there was no point to, unless he wanted to continue his proficiency farming. Excess experience, from the looks of it, just vanished into the void. Nothing happened with the remaining 115 EXP he had obtained after he used the first 35 to level up to 10. It just went poof.
'A bit of a waste, but I know there are some systems who convert that excess EXP into various rewards. To be honest I'm kind of glad this system isn't doing that. Otherwise, I would start farming the shit out of that.', Miles mused. He could already farm stat points with Consume. If his system introduced another method to farm stat points, it would definitely be unfair to the wilderness he was now in.
But then again, this was the MCU he was talking about. He needed to make sure he had the strength to protect himself!
Letting that thought linger in the back of his mind, Miles carried his paws back inside his burrow and called it quits early. He wanted to check out what his first evolution had in store for him.
Most of his skills were either maxed out or on the verge of being maxed now.
The only Skills Miles did not work on during this time was Basic Foxfire, and Burrow. Miles had plans to burrow his way around Cold Lake, creating underground networks that would allow him to move quickly from one place to another. Doing this will also allow him to hide from predators, should that situation arise.
From what Miles could see about Basic Foxfire, the skill will only level up when he creates new skills. It will give Basic Foxfire a certain amount of proficiency points depending on what skill was created. It was still at level 2. Once Miles finishes his first evolution, that would be his first target to work on apart from trying to find the wolf pack.
After all, he wanted to expand his skill list. He only had a couple skills he could use to hunt.
Closing his wooden slab, Miles found himself alone in his burrow. It was extra dark this time since there was no sunlight trying to peak in. Every so often, Miles would hear a wolf howl in the far distance. It was tough to gauge how far away the howls were, but they weren't anywhere close to where Miles's burrow was. Miles likely had a long trek remaining before he would even get a chance to find a pack of wolves.
At least that provided a sense of comfort, knowing Miles wasn't within reach of harm's way. He didn't know what the system would do when his evolution began, but there was a high chance it would make Miles immobilized until it was done. That was a common theme in the nonhuman stories he had read in his past life, anyways.
Miles's gaze shifted toward his status window. While reviewing his stats, he saw that the evolution button was currently blinking. Without hesitation, he pressed it. Notifications immediately followed, and he started to look them over!
[Ding! Host is now eligible to attain his first evolution.]
[Ding! Host can now evolve into different species of foxes. Please see the selection list.]
Before Miles's eyes, he saw a little evolution tree appear on a large panel before him. Each panel could be seen blinking in a blue glow, signaling that it could be chosen. The panels presented different images of foxes.
It started out as if it was the main roots of a tree. These roots are currently split off into...three panels?
Miles mused seeing this window before him. 'Looks like I have only three options to choose from to start with. Maybe more will come into play later. Either way, Miles began to review each evolution option he could choose from. As he continued reading the information each one had, sure enough they had their own perks!
[Adolescent Silver Fox.]
[Adolescent Arctic Fox.]
[Adolescent Gray Fox.]
Three options were now presented before MIles. He didn't make an immediate decision though. He wanted to fully understand what each one had to offer first!
