Lu Yinfeng took a taxi back to her own home.
Her father was likely at work, as expected, and she silently prayed that her sharp-tongued and shrewish stepmother was not at home either.
However, when Lu Yinfeng inserted her key into the lock, she twisted it several times but couldn't open the door.
She pulled out the key and examined it again, assured that she hadn't taken the wrong one.
Could it be...
"Who is it?" A shrill, slightly grating voice called out from inside the door.
Lu Yinfeng had to brace herself as she replied, "Aunt Meng, it's me, Lu Yinfeng."
The door was quickly opened.
A slender and graceful middle-aged woman appeared at the doorway; she was Meng Jie, Lu Yinfeng's father's second wife.
Less than three months after Lu Yinfeng's mother passed away, this woman moved in with great fanfare to become the new mistress of the house.
Lu Yinfeng really disliked this woman.
Meng Jie looked Lu Yinfeng up and down, noticing the red marks on her neck and teased, "Seems like you young people play quite intensely."
Lu Yinfeng walked straight in without responding to Meng Jie's comment and simply asked, "Aunt Meng, why did you change the locks?"
"Oh. There was a break-in before, so we changed them," Meng Jie said casually.
Lu Yinfeng had no intention of probing whether Meng Jie was telling the truth; she headed straight for her room.
Upon opening the door, she was greeted by an unfamiliar scene.
Her room had completely changed, and all her personal belongings were gone.
Meng Jie, who had followed her, remarked lightly at Lu Yinfeng's stunned expression, "Your sister is coming back from studying abroad. Your room was vacant anyway, so we cleared it out for her to stay in. This room has the best position and lighting; your sister had her eye on it before she went abroad."
The sister Meng Jie referred to was Lu Yuzhen, a sister who came out of nowhere and moved into the Lu Family with Meng Jie.
Lu Yuzhen was not Lu Zheng's child, but to prove his devotion to Meng Jie, Lu Zheng treated her exceptionally well, even better than his own biological daughter, Lu Yinfeng.
Back then, Lu Yinfeng had been accepted to a renowned university abroad, but Lu Zheng gave that opportunity to Lu Yuzhen instead.
This matter had always been a sore point for Lu Yinfeng, and as a result, she immensely disliked her so-called half-sister.
"Are you guys nuts!" Lu Yinfeng screamed in a breakdown, "There are so many other empty rooms in this house, why the hell does it have to be mine!"
The building was a villa, after all, with plenty of rooms to spare.
Yet her stepmother and stepsister seemed to be intent on vexing her on purpose!
"What are you shouting about! Disrespectful child," Meng Jie's expression soured as she sharply criticized Lu Yinfeng, "Once a daughter is married off, she's like water that's been poured away; your father didn't say anything, who are you to point fingers and make decisions?"
"I am married, not dead! What right do you have to clear out my room!"
"Hmph!" Meng Jie snorted derisively, "Can't find warmth with Mo Qianyan, so you come back here to throw a tantrum? You uneducated, low-class woman should count yourself lucky to have married into the Mo Family!"
In the eyes of others, Lu Yinfeng indeed seemed to have married above her station with Mo Qianyan.
He was the young master of the first noble family of Mochuan City, distinguished in family background, handsome and charming.
As for Lu Yinfeng, she was merely a pretty girl from a middle-class background.
"This house belonged to my mom!" Lu Yinfeng retorted loudly, "Even if she's gone, it's not your place to bully her daughter in the house she worked hard to buy!"
Meng Jie, humiliated by the retort, couldn't help but raise her hand and slap Lu Yinfeng.
Lu Yinfeng wouldn't take the slap without a fight, retaliated, and a scuffle ensued between her and Meng Jie.
The commotion alarmed the housemaid returning home with groceries, who immediately called Lu Zheng, busy at work, to come back.
By the time Lu Zheng arrived, Lu Yinfeng and Meng Jie had been separated by the housemaid and were sitting on opposite ends of the living room sofa, each sulking.
Lu Zheng walked over quickly and, without a word, slapped Lu Yinfeng across the face.
Lu Yinfeng clutched her face, her eyes filled with disbelief as she looked at Lu Zheng.
"Lu Yinfeng! Don't you look at me with those eyes! I'm your father; don't you dare feel wronged about me disciplining you!" Lu Zheng rebuked with commanding force.
Meng Jie, sitting beside them, revealed a victor's sneer.
"Dad! Even you treat me this way?" Lu Yinfeng suddenly stood up, confronting Lu Zheng with eyes full of resentment. "She was clearly the one at fault, so why are you hitting me? Do you even see me as your daughter!"
"You unfilial child!" Lu Zheng exploded in rage. "Speak politely to your Aunt Meng, or else... or else I'll make sure you'll never step foot in this house ever again!"
Hearing this, Lu Yinfeng gave a bitter laugh.
Perhaps, ever since the day her mother died, she had no home.
Lu Yinfeng's heart felt as if it had died, her teeth clenched tightly; she shot Lu Zheng and Meng Jie a vicious glance and, without saying another word, turned and ran out of the house.
It was all right; anyway, she had nothing left to linger for here, it was just a pity for her collection of limited edition comics and the autographed books from her favorite authors.
The biggest pity of all was that the fruits of her mother's life's hard labor were plucked away by those three people...
By the time Lu Yinfeng arrived at her friend's small bar, MoonLight, she had already regained control of her emotions.
No one could tell that she had just been crying.
In the daytime, the bar was almost empty. Yan Sijia was cleaning the bar when she saw Lu Yinfeng, looking dispirited as she pushed the door open, and immediately went over to her with concern.
"Yinfeng, what's wrong with you? You have quite some dark circles..."
Lu Yinfeng, recalling the tumultuous previous night, quickly snapped back to reality and asked, "What were you thinking, Sijia! How could you let Mo Nanze come pick me up!"
Yan Sijia looked utterly confused. "What's the problem? I thought he was quite concerned about you. He came right over as soon as I called."
Seeing that Lu Yinfeng's expression was still displeased, Yan Sijia bumped her shoulder and said smugly, "I was too busy to leave, so I had to call Mo Qianyan's Little Uncle to come. Besides, didn't you say that Mo Nanze was gay? It should be the safest option to have him come."
Yan Sijia still looked quite pleased with herself.
Meanwhile, Lu Yinfeng had already covered her face with her hand and let out a long sigh to the heavens.
"Mo Nanze isn't gay—"
"Wait!" Yan Sijia suddenly became excited, quickly grabbing two drinks from the bar and then pressing Lu Yinfeng down into a seat with a gossip-hungry look on her face. "I think I smell a juicy story here, come on, tell me all about it!"
Lu Yinfeng couldn't help but laugh and cry as she succinctly explained what happened.
"I slept with Mo Nanze, and we even had a shotgun wedding."
Yan Sijia's jaw dropped, quickly zeroing in on the crux of the matter. "Ah? So he wasn't gay after all?"
Whenever Lu Yinfeng met Mo Nanze before, she always thought he looked so ascetic, and from what others said, he seemed to avoid women—preferring even the mosquitoes around him to be male.
His father, Mo Qingfeng, would also often express his concerns to Lu Yinfeng, worried that his son would never find a wife.
Basing her conclusions on the information available, Lu Yinfeng boldly speculated—Mo Nanze was gay!
This explosive and thrilling news was, of course, shared with her best friend, Yan Sijia.
So for three years, the two of them resolutely believed that Mo Nanze was gay.
Lu Yinfeng never expected that she would be the one to disprove that rumor with her firsthand experience.
"Tsk tsk tsk." Yan Sijia couldn't help but sigh. "Mo Nanze is actually heterosexual... what a scandalous wealthy family."
After a pause, Yan Sijia's face turned into a sly grin as she nudged Lu Yinfeng's shoulder and asked, "How was it? How did it feel on your first night? You hadn't slept with your husband in three years of marriage, and then the day after you divorce, you sleep with your ex-uncle-in-law... But, he looks so abstinent, I wonder how skilled he is?"
Yan Sijia was a chatterbox and, given she ran a bar, had a bold and forthright personality that often made her speak without a filter.
Every single sentence she uttered was something Lu Yinfeng wished she could censor.
Lu Yinfeng managed a dry smile and, without indulging Yan Sijia's curiosity, brushed her off with a few casual remarks and was no longer willing to discuss the topic.
Now that she couldn't go back to the Mo Family and her own home wouldn't accommodate her, Lu Yinfeng thought about crashing at Yan Sijia's place for a few days.
She had barely broached the subject when Yan Sijia showed a very apologetic expression, "Yinfeng, I'm so sorry, I'm currently living with my boyfriend, and it's not very convenient..."
Yan Sijia was known to go through boyfriends at a rate of one every three months; this was the first one that had progressed to living together.
Lu Yinfeng knew this woman was serious about this relationship.
"It's fine." Lu Yinfeng shrugged nonchalantly, responding with a smile.
After leaving Moonlight, Lu Yinfeng stood on the roadside, looking around in a daze.
In that moment, she felt as if the whole world had abandoned her.
