Bab 9: And so it begins
That night after the fight, Daniel lay next to Amanda, who was peacefully sleeping. A conflicted expression crossed his face as he suddenly sat up, glancing at a picture on the wall. It showed Sam and Jack executing the crane kick, with Daniel standing behind them, arms crossed and a proud smile on his face. He thought to himself, I've really let myself go. I've spent all my time training the kids and neglected my own training. I need to change that.
Determined, Daniel declared, "From now on, I'm going to join the kids in their training." Amanda pulled him back down gently, murmuring, "It's late. You can start training tomorrow." With that, they both settled back into sleep.
The next day, I was sparring with Sam, with Daniel acting as the referee. Sam launched a roundhouse kick toward my face. I caught her leg, flipped her around, and threw her to the side. Sprinting over, I attempted to punch her in the face, but she kicked up, nearly catching me. I dove over her kick, flipping away just in time.
Sam quickly got back on her feet and tried to dropkick me in the stomach, but I blocked with my arms. I grunted as I stood up, only to see her attempting to sweep my legs. I front-flipped to dodge her move. I aimed a kick at her head, but she caught my leg and pulled me toward her. I punched her in the stomach, and she retaliated with a punch to my chest.
Daniel called out, "Foul! No point." He continued, "Fight over."
We both sat down, and Daniel asked, "What were your mistakes?"
Sam replied, "I tried to overpower someone double my size."
"Exactly," Daniel affirmed. "You should use your flexibility against someone bigger. Try to get into their defense."
"Yes, Sensei," Sam acknowledged.
Daniel turned to me. "Jack, what about you?"
I responded, "I got too close where I couldn't overpower her."
"Bravo," he said. "You're getting good at recognizing your mistakes. Now you have to ensure you don't repeat them, right?"
We both replied, "Yes, Sensei."
"Okay, now give me 200 push-ups."
We groaned but started doing push-ups. To our surprise, Daniel joined us, saying, "I have to get back into shape. I can't let my students surpass me." We exchanged smiles and continued our push-ups.
A few days later, I was hanging out with Sam at the dojo when she said, "Hey Jack, do you want to hang out before the school year starts?"
I teased, "A date, huh?"
Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she punched my shoulder. "No, no! Just golf and stuff, and maybe something to eat afterward."
I replied, "Okay, I was just joking. I'm free on Saturday; I'll pick you up at 7."
"I'll be waiting," she said with a smile, and we returned to our training.
From a distance, Daniel watched the young couple with a smile. He thought to himself, My plan is moving faster than I expected. If I play my cards right, my baby will be safe and happy for the rest of her life. With that thought, he began cheering silently in his head.
