Bab 147: It's a long story

"Yes, it is," I said, my voice like steel. "Never touch my wife again."

As Daniel and his cronies slunk away, I kept my gaze firmly on them, my mind simmering with thoughts of retribution. Killing him would be so easy, so satisfying. But I couldn't do that in front of Elena. I had to be smarter, more controlled. He'd pay for this, just not today.

I turned to Elena, who was still shaking, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and relief. My heart ached seeing her like this. I walked over and wrapped her in my arms, pulling her close. "It's finished now," I whispered, trying to infuse my voice with as much comfort as possible.

Zaya stood nearby, her eyes glaring daggers at me. I didn't care. I had only one priority right now, and that was Elena. Ignoring Zaya's hostility, I scooped Elena up in my arms, carrying her as if she weighed nothing. She protested, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "Carmen, put me down," she murmured.
