For the next 8 years, nothing interesting happened at all. Mark and I's powers have yet to awaken despite us recently turning 17 years old. Dad says it may awaken this year or when we are in our 20s, as it's different for hybrids or something.
Groaning as I leave my AP calculus class, I grab my book bag and head out, ignoring everyone as I walk through the halls to my locker.
On my way there, I spot some blond douche messing with Mark. As I speak no words, I've already given this asshole three warnings as I close the distance. Landing a mean left hook to the front of his face, I smile as I feel his nose shifting under my punch.
"Care to keep your hands off my brother asshole?" I stare down at the jock as he looks up at me in fear. His hand covers his broken and bleeding nose as he scurries away.
"Dude, Max! I had that handled!" Looking at Mark, I notice a girl behind him, I remember her as Amber. A girl Mark has been crushing on since freshman year, as I sigh.
"Sure you did, Mark. I'm sure you would have handled him swiftly with that devastating online self-defense class training." I snort as Mark glares at me. Since Mark works, he doesn't have time to take self-defense classes, so he opts to watch YouTube videos of the katas, doing absolutely nothing to help him defend himself.
Unlike my twin, I have been using our parents' money responsibly and going to my classes every week. I'm already a black belt, but I still train to keep myself in form for when my power awakens.
"Come on, dude. You can talk to your girlfriend later. I have to drive you to work and then head to the gym, and I'm on a strict schedule, dude." I pull Mark along as he groans in irritation.
Once we are outside the building, Mark's friend approaches us. "Mark, Max, wait up!" he yells out as Mark and I turn around. I scowl slightly at the time being wasted, but I stay.
"Oh, hey, William. What's up?" Mark greets William, and William smiles. A few of us are going to go hang out at shenanigans tonight. Do you two want to come along?" Willaim asks, and I shake my head.
"Sorry, dude. Mark and I are busy with a few things today. Maybe next week," I explain as Willaim nods and waves as we walk off. "Oh, yeah. I forgot you two had tight schedules. Maybe next time."
Mark turns around as I continue walking forward. "Thanks, man. See you later." Mark follows along as we enter my beat-up, hand-me-down car.

After dropping Mark off, I finally arrived at the gym after a short five-minute drive. Smiling to myself, I immediately got to work.
I began lifting 140 with no spotter. My deadlift is 200. Despite working out so often, I don't gain any muscle. As my father explained, even though my powers have yet to awaken, my body still operates like a Viltrumite, so all the muscle I gain stays compact for agility and speed.
"15, 16, 17, 18," I count my Reps as I grip the bar with a bit too much force. Apparently, the metal bar crumbles under my grip, shocking me as I feel the weights become as light as a feather.
"What the fuck?" I exclaim as I stand up with 140 pounds still in hand. I test my new sudden strength as I curl the bar with one hand. Not even feeling a slight strain, I grin like a maniac.
"It's about damn time!" I yell to myself as the other people in the gym look at me in confusion. Smiling awkwardly at their gazes, I immediately leave the gym and head to my car.
"Mark gets off work in 10, dude. He's gonna be soo jealous!" my grin widens as I open my door, accidentally ripping off the entire door as I let out a yelp in shock. "shit..." I frown as I drop the separate car door. Frowning.

I pick up Mark, and we head home; he does not comment on my ripped car door as we arrive.
We eagerly head to the dinner table, and I quickly notice my twin's excitement. 'He must have awakened too,' I immediately deduce as we sit at the table.
Mom walks over with a tray of our food. "Let's go ahead and start. It doesn't look like he will be home anytime soon." She says this is an everyday occurrence, more or less, as we have all gotten used to Dad not arriving on time for dinner.
Mark and I spoke simultaneously: "I had a pretty exciting day. " We are both interrupted by a whooshing sound as Dad arrives home in his civilian clothing. I resist the urge to yell jinx as Dad speaks.
"Sorry, I'm late. There was an enchanted flood in Egypt I had to deal with on the way over," he says, speaking about stopping a flood like it's an everyday occurrence as I smile.
Mom beats me to the punch as she asks, "Did you take care of that dragon?"
Dad responds while chewing on his food, "Yeah, once I found out who was controlling the thing, there wasn't much to it; the hard part was keeping the civilians safe while I figured out who was behind it all."
Mom smiles before continuing, "Your publisher called. He wanted to check and see how the book was coming along." Mom sips her water before continuing, "I told him you were on one of your research trips."
Dad cleans off his face as I sit there impatiently, eager to talk about my powers. Mark seems to be in the same boat as we wait for their conversation to end.
I'll take the weekend and write a book for them. I'll have to pick up a couple of spare keyboards." Dad continues wiping off his face before he speaks again.
"I hope the guardians of the globe can cover for me," he finally finishes, wiping his face as Mom smiles before turning to me and Mark. "So, how was your day, boys?"
I beat Mark to the punch as I excitedly said, "I think my superpowers have developed!" I finished enthusiastically as silence briefly reigned out.
Mom stares at me unsurprisingly as she turns to Mark. "That's nice. Can you pass the tomatoes?" I sigh as Mark passes Mom the tomatoes.

At night, I decided to test my powers by opening my window and standing on the roof. But I notice I'm not the only one here, as I notice Mark hyping himself up in preparation to fly.
"Hey, doofus," I say as Mark turns to me, shock-ridden on his face. "Dude, what are you doing up at this time of night?" he questions as I shrug. "Same reason you're up at this time of night," I say as Mark sighs.
"Touche." Walking over, I stand next to Mark. We look at each other silently, understanding each other, as we count "One, two, three!" We both jump off the roof at the same time, tugging at the weird feeling in my ears. Closing my eyes in fear of falling, I don't feel an impact as I open my eyes.
Mark also mastered it as we floated beside each other with excitement. "Max, we're flying!" he exclaims as I nod.
"Mark, let's get a better view!" I blast off into the night sky, hearing Mark follow close behind. It doesn't take long for us to fly past the clouds.
"Wooo, this is so cool!" Mark yells as we go higher and higher. It doesn't take long for us to be a fair height above the clouds as we look down at our house.
I smile at the view. The sky is beautiful. If I could fly before, I would never walk. My control gets better by the minute as I think less and less about flying while staying afloat.
"Hey Mark, do you think we can survive in space?" I ask as Mark turns to me like I'm an idiot. Dude, no! We don't even know if Dad can go to space yet!" he exclaims, and I look up in curiosity.
"Yeah, maybe you're right. Let's head back." We begin to get ready to float down when I hear a loud burring noise. Turning around, I spot a plane flying straight toward us.
"Shit, watch out!" I yell as Mark, and I barely avoid destroying the plane. If we were even a fraction as durable as Dad, then we wouldn't be in any real danger, even if we fell from this height and landed headfirst.
If that plane hit us, I'm 100% sure we would be OK with our newly awakened powers. The issue is the hundreds of passengers on board. It would've been awful if we killed a couple hundred people on our first flight.
"Yeah, let's hurry up home," Mark exclaims as I nod, and we fly back to our house quickly.

The next day, Mark and I leave the house with a common goal: to make our superhero debut as we fly toward Chicago.
Mark and I have a similar outfit on, with a bandanna covering our lower faces and goggles on our eyes.
We arrive in a little less than 3 minutes despite Chicago being a fair couple of hours away—a testament to our speed. Immediately upon arrival, Mark and I run into two well-known villains.
"Dude, it's the Mauler twins!" I exclaim in excitement as Mark nods along. We have always dreamed of showing these guys who the superior twin brothers were.
"You get the one on the left, and I get the one on the right!" Mark nods immediately as he blasts forward, landing a nasty uppercut on one of the twin's faces.
Not one to be left out, I also move forward, kicking the second one in the gut as he growls. "Who the hell are you freaks!?" the twin fighting mark shouts as I duck under a blow that would've probably stung a bit.
Parrying an attempted knee to the balls, I respond with a spinning back fist, catching the twin I'm fighting in the jaw as blood spills from his lips. Not leaving any breathing room, I close the distance on his downed form, stomping on his head for good measure as I feel his body go limp.
Just as I'm done with my fight, Mark finishes his. He throws his twin on top of mine, making them groan as we high-five.
"Hell yeah!" Mark laughs as we celebrate our first win. but that is interrupted by a familiar voice. "What the hell are the two of you wearing?"
Me and I turn simultaneously as we spot Dad in his civilian clothing leaning on a wall. "And isn't it too early to be doing this? How long have you had your powers? A day?" Mark and I laugh sheepishly as Dad blurs away and returns in his suit.
Mark decides to correct Dad. "No, we've had our powers for two days, actually. We have been wearing this when we practice flying so people won't recognize us!" I nod in agreement as Mark explains.
"Well, I can't have you two running around looking that ridiculous. It sounds like the police are here to pick up the sleeping beauties; come on." Mark and I fly off into the sky along with Dad as he continues speaking.
"I'm going to introduce you to a guy who can help you."
