Davian stepped into the room now, tossing Arthur a look. "Need something?"

"I-I… well," Arthur said huffily, "I was waiting for your decision, Master Davian. I'll carry it out, if needed."

"No, it's not needed," Davian said flatly, "See yourself out."

It wasn't a suggestion, so Arthur quickly hot-footed it out of the room. He never dared to go against Master Davian, no matter how tolerant he might seem.

Well, tolerant wasn't the right word, he was mostly disinterested. Even when Arthur tried to give him monthly reports of the workings of the mansion.

Lake felt rooted to the ground in front of him, flinching when the door clicked shut.
