Bab 23: Chapter 23: Unfazed
As Matthew took to the pitch, the opposing team's players couldn't help but notice the young debutant. Their captain, a grizzled veteran, took it upon himself to try and intimidate Matthew.
"Hey, kid, you think you can handle the pace of this game?" he sneered, as Matthew took his position on the wing.
Matthew looked up at him, his eyes calm and focused. "I'm here to play football, not to talk," he said, his voice firm and confident.
The opposing captain snorted, but Matthew could see the hint of a smile on his face. He knew he had gotten under his skin.
Throughout the game, the opposing team tried to rough Matthew up, but he refused to back down. He dodged and weaved around their tackles, using his quick feet and agility to evade their challenges.
The commentators were impressed. "Matthew is showing incredible composure for a 15-year-old debutant. He's not letting the opposition's intimidation tactics get to him!"
As the game wore on, Matthew's confidence grew. He began to take on the opposing team's defenders, beating them with his speed and skill.
The crowd was on its feet, cheering him on. "Matthew, Matthew, Matthew!" they chanted, as he made a dazzling run down the wing.
The opposing team's captain tried to keep up with him, but Matthew was too fast, too quick. He left him in the dust, and delivered a pinpoint accurate cross into the box.
The cross found its way to the head of Enyimba's striker, who nodded it home with ease. The goal was met with a deafening roar from the crowd, and Matthew's teammates lifted him onto their shoulders in celebration.
The commentators were ecstatic. "What a moment for Matthew! His cross leads to the goal, and Enyimba takes the lead! This young man is a star in the making!"
The crowd erupted in cheers, and Matthew's teammates mobbed him.
