<General perspective>
After parking the car, Ava walked towards the door, with Haley following behind. Ava opened the door and saw Melissa waiting in the hallway. As Melissa saw Ava, she approached her and noticed Haley behind her. A smile appeared on Melissa's face.
Melissa asked, "You must be Alex Dunphy, right?"
Ava looked towards Haley and signaled for her to say yes, but Haley had different plans. Haley hugged my left hand and replied, "No, I am Haley Dunphy, Ava's girlfriend, and Alex is my sister."
Melissa looked at Haley and said, "Ava told me about you, but I never thought Ava was serious about it."
Melissa continued, "Anyway, welcome to Lewis House. Dinner will be ready in 15 minutes." Melissa took Haley's hand and walked towards the garden, where Kevin's mom was waiting for Ava's friend. Melissa said, "You can talk to Ava's grandma while I get the dinner ready." After saying that, Melissa left the garden. Ava looked at Grandma and took a seat beside her. Grandma looked at Ava and said, "So, you brought a friend home, Ava."
Haley instantly corrected her, saying, "I am Ava's girlfriend."
Grandma smiled while holding Ava's hand: "You don't have to lie to me, Ava's mother is not here."
Haley, taken aback, looked at Ava. Ava shook her head and said, "I didn't tell her that."
Haley asked with curiosity, "Grandma, how did you know I was acting?"
Grandma replied with a smile, "You see, when I saw you and Ava, I knew that you could be friends rather than girlfriends."
Haley thought, 'Just by looking?'
Grandma turned to Ava and said, "Can you get me an orange juice?"
Ava replied, "Right away," and left.
Grandma continued, "So, do you like her?"
Haley, shocked by the words, said, "No, I'm not a lesbian."
Grandma chuckled and asked, "As a friend, and you can call me Maya."
Haley sighed and replied, "I think she is great as a friend."
Maya: "You know, I have been with Ava since the day she was born. She was a genius since childhood. I know her like a book. She never lets anyone suffer if that person is close to her. But she can't make conversation when there is no interest involved."
Maya Continued: "All her friends are made using interests, things like money or her talent. There has never been once when she tried to make friends using her hobbies or personality. I am not saying that all her friends depend on these interests, but their friendship started with that."
Haley fell into thought, as she is also pretending to be Ava's girlfriend for money, but she wants to listen more about Ava.
Haley asked: "Can you tell me more about Ava?"
Maya smiled and said: "There are many things about her, but if I have to pick one, that would be how she helped me."
Haley said while looking at Grandma, noticing how healthy she looks: "Helped you?"
Maya chuckled again and Continued: "You might think I don't need help, but three years ago, I wasn't like this. I was waiting for death to meet my late husband in the afterlife. But when Ava was 12, she asked me why I sit in the garden. It took her 4 years to ask me that. I told her about it because I know she is too mature for her age. After 5 days, she gave me an iPod with only 3 songs on it."
Haley asked: "Only 3 songs on an iPod?"
Grandma replied: "For you, it's only 3 songs, but for me, it was my granddaughter's way of helping me."
Haley asked: "How did 3 songs help you?"
Maya replied with some pride while taking out the iPod: "Well, these 3 songs were created by Ava. She made these 3 songs in her father's studio without letting her father know about it."
Haley was shocked, as she knows how much time and dedication it takes to make a song, as her ex-boyfriend is in the school band.
Haley asked politely: "Grandma, can I hear these songs?"
Maya put the iPod in Haley's hand and said: "I have another one in my room. You can have this one, and if you want to be Ava's friend, try to get to know her on your own."
Haley put the iPod in her pocket: "Thanks, Grandma Maya. I will try my best."
Maya said seriously: "Try not to get caught by Melissa. Ava is her only daughter, she might do something to you."
Haley got scared: "Really???"
Maya started pinching Haley: "You are just like my Ava, but less cute."
Haley pouted, knowing she was teased.
Ava put the orange juice on the table where Maya and Haley were sitting: "Grandma, here is your fresh orange juice." As Ava handed over the glass to Maya, she saw Haley's pouting expression and asked: "Why are you making that face?"
Maya replied: "Well, I said you are more cute than her."
Ava looked at Haley and said while poking Haley's cheeks: "Haley, she is my grandma, so of course, I am cute for her. But you are hot in my opinion."
A smile appeared on Haley's face; she herself didn't know why she felt happy when Ava called her 'hot'.
Melissa shouted from inside the kitchen: "Dinner is ready, Ava, help me with the plates."
Ava said: "Just a moment."
Haley got up and said: "I will also want to help."
Ava replied: "Don't worry, it's not a big deal. Let's go, dinner's ready."
Haley nodded, and the three of them walked towards the dining room. After putting the plates, everyone took their respective seats. Ava looked at Melissa and asked: "Mom, where is Dad?"
Melissa replied with a displeased expression: "Well, his friend is getting married, so he is attending the bachelor's party."
Ava said while putting her hand on Melissa's shoulder to calm her: "Mom, don't worry. It's just a party, and it's not his first bachelor's party, right?"
Melissa felt her distracted mind calm: "Yeah, you are right, sweetie. But your girlfriend is here for dinner, and your dad is not home."
Ava replied: "Haley can meet Dad next time, right, Haley?"
Haley nodded her head as she had water in her mouth.
Melissa sighed while looking at Haley and asked: "How about it, Haley? Do you like to spend the summer vacation with us?"
Haley choked on water as she replied without thinking: "Yes, why not."
Melissa said with a smile: "Then it's fixed, you are coming with us for summer vacation."
Ava messaged on her phone: "What are you doing? Do you want to play my girlfriend's role till the end of summer vacation?"
Haley looked at the message and replied: "Sorry, I didn't mean that. I misspoke."
