Before that attack on Strax, Monica had been suppressing something within herself for some time, even before leaving the small town of Steinhardt. It started with the day Strax and Beatrice first had sex.

They didn't know it, but Monica and the other maids practically heard everything, especially since the house was entirely made of less-than-quality wood, meaning the walls were somewhat thin. This meant Beatrice's moans... filled the entire house. Obviously, no one said anything; after all, they couldn't comment on their landlady having sex.
