Bab 94: Chapter 94: Competition

This afternoon, Lynn's break time was a bit earlier, so he went straight back to the dormitory. After waiting for half an hour, Di Gregorio arrived, and at that moment, Lynn happened to be cleaning his firearms. The genuine Danish-German hybrid picked up his Mauser rifle and remarked with surprise, "This is still an antique from over twenty years ago!"

"Hey! What can I do? I'm not an officer, so I'm not qualified to be equipped with a Luger or a Walther!" Lynn didn't hesitate to downplay himself, and this self-deprecating tone always managed to win Di Gregorio's sympathy.

"What's so difficult about getting a handgun? What model do you want?" Di Gregorio, being a quartermaster of sorts and having considerable priority in equipment allocation within the "Vampire" Assault Brigade, didn't find any major issue with regular firearms.

Knowing that requesting something like a Luger P08 might put his friend in a difficult position, Lynn thought for a moment and cunningly said, "I just like those Mauser military pistols, they have a great feel to them, and they can even be used as a hammer when you run out of bullets! Hey, if there's a model with a twenty-round capacity and adjustable firing rate, that would be perfect!"

"Alright, isn't that the M1932? One pack of cigarettes for one!" Di Gregorio grinned.

Hearing this, Lynn quickly pulled out two packs of cigarettes from under the bed. "Big bro, can you get me two then?"

"Two? Just for yourself?" Di Gregorio looked at Lynn with a puzzled expression. Others found one too heavy, and this guy wanted two?

"Yeah, big bro, you don't know, I have a special skill, which is dual-wielding guns!" Lynn pretended to hold two guns with his hands, simulating the sound of rapid fire with his mouth.

"Is that so?" Di Gregorio thought for a moment, then took the two packs of cigarettes.

"Hey, big bro!" Lynn lightly called out, then pulled out the last pack of cigarettes from his bag, pleading, "Can you get me some more bullets?"

"Don't we have a daily quota of bullets?" Di Gregorio stuffed the cigarettes into his pocket, muttering curiously.

"Big bro, you know, the daily quota of bullets at the shooting range is simply not enough for practice!" Lynn genuinely felt dissatisfied. With the current low training intensity, besides studying and practicing German vocabulary and dialogue in the command post, he could have had plenty of time to practice shooting every day, but the fixed quota of bullets was far from sufficient for him — he couldn't take away the practice time from those who neglected it.

Want more practice? As the saying goes: find your own bullets!

"Alright, alright!" Although Di Gregorio had an indifferent tone, Lynn could tell he wasn't entirely confident. If things didn't go well, consider these three packs of cigarettes wasted!

Just talking wasn't enough to prove anything. Lynn simply brought the cleaned old rifle with him and put his arm around Di Gregorio's shoulder. "Let's go, let's practice shooting at the shooting range!"

The assault brigade's shooting range had a total of six, four of which simulated real combat environments located outside the camp, which Lynn had visited when he was a reservist. Two were located within the camp. One was a small underground shooting range, which was safe even for shooting at night, but could only perform stationary paper target shooting; the other was an outdoor shooting range with electrically controlled moving targets and prop targets, with a maximum shooting distance of 300 meters, where various rifles, submachine guns, and pistols could be used.

Before this, Lynn and Di Gregorio had practiced shooting together several times, mostly in the underground shooting range. Shooting at a fixed target at less than 50 meters, with a bit of practice, one could achieve good results, so Lynn's advantage wasn't obvious, and he had even lost once. It was precisely because of this that Di Gregorio was willing to take out five cigarettes as a reward — after all, he also had a chance to win!

After leaving the dormitory, Lynn directly led his "big bro" to the outdoor shooting range. Although Di Gregorio had spent some time on the front line, he mainly served as a technical officer responsible for weapons maintenance and inspection in the past. Later, he worked as a technical inspector in a military industry enterprise for some time, with very few opportunities for actual combat. Seeing him a bit nervous, Lynn casually chose a manual Mauser 98k and his own shotgun.

Di Gregorio chose an MP44 and a P38. Both weapons had excellent automatic performance, accuracy, and practicality, and were considered "golden partners" within the "Vampire" Assault Brigade.

"Full-directional free-moving shooting!" Without consulting Di Gregorio, Lynn directly instructed the shooting range administrator to select the most challenging mode.

Although Lynn wasn't good at shooting moving targets, seeing the significant difference in the weapons held by both sides, Di Gregorio calmly loaded his ammunition and pulled the bolt.

With the shotgun placed on his belt, Lynn angled the Mauser

rifle downwards. When he heard the electric bell signaling the start of the moving targets, he stood with one foot in front of the other, took a deep breath, and aimed.

The first target to appear from behind the earthen mound was a life-sized straw man wearing a gray-green American-made steel helmet. Its khaki uniform was riddled with countless bullet holes.

Quickly judging the distance, Lynn slightly lowered the muzzle, estimated the lead, and squeezed the trigger while holding his breath.

Ping!

The bullet hit the helmet, making a crisp sound.

Crack... Crack...

Since the first shot missed, Di Gregorio fired two shots in succession, finally hitting the target.

Lynn didn't distract himself by observing his companion's shooting. With his left hand gripping the handguard tightly and the buttstock pressed against his right chest, he smoothly operated the bolt with his right hand, ejecting the spent casing and chambering a new round.

In this shooting range, shooters could move within a certain range laterally and shoot from several different elevated positions. Based on his previous experience here, Lynn knew that the second target would appear behind a further mound and would be a straw man wearing an Allied uniform crouching to operate a machine gun. So, he quickly moved to the left, knelt down with his right knee, leveled the rifle, and naturally closed his left eye.

Having spent much more time in the brigade headquarters than Lynn, Di Gregorio naturally understood the layout of these shooting ranges. He also moved to a more advantageous position and placed the assault rifle on a half-height position constructed of sandbags.

Although the speed of moving along the short track was slower than the first, the "British soldier" in front of him was obstructed by a water-cooled heavy machine gun, making it necessary to hit above its chest for the shot to count.

Ping!

Almost the same crisp sound accompanied the lonely gunshot, and the distinctly British-style flat-topped steel helmet flew backward from the impact of the bullet.

Crack... Ping! Crack... Ping!

At a distance of nearly a hundred meters, Di Gregorio's two consecutive shots seemed to hit the abandoned machine gun used as an obstacle. As a result, he tirelessly fired a third shot, finally without hearing the sound of bullets hitting hard objects.

Lynn had already changed position and moved to the far left. He knew that the third target to appear would be a "Soviet soldier" lying down, holding a circular drum-fed PPD submachine gun. At about a hundred meters away, this weapon posed a significant threat to German infantry.

Many people usually chose to shoot from a prone position to deal with this target, but Lynn did the opposite. He stood up straight, leveled the rifle from a high position, and waited for the target to appear. When it did, he suddenly lowered the muzzle and almost simultaneously pulled the trigger while in the process of "swinging the gun" vertically — because at that moment, the fourth target also appeared. It was a "Soviet soldier" in a brave charging posture, moving diagonally between two mounds, leaving the shooter only a few seconds to react.

Dealing with two consecutive targets with a traditional bolt-action rifle was not easy. Lynn still tightly held the rifle handguard with his left hand and quickly moved his right hand away from the trigger position towards his waist. As he pulled out the shotgun and raised it, his right thumb completed the action of pulling back the hammer. With his arm stretched out and his head slightly tilted to the right, he aimed directly before the target disappeared.

At a speed far exceeding that of ordinary pistol bullets, the 9mm Parabellum bullet flew along a straight trajectory in rotation.

Calmly, Lynn watched as dust rose and bullet holes appeared in the shoulder area of the straw man wearing a khaki military uniform. With strong confidence, he turned his wrist, making the magazine parallel to the ground. When three targets, separated by intervals, appeared simultaneously near or far, he repeatedly pulled the trigger — this shooting method effectively addressed the technical problem of the Mauser military pistol having strong recoil and significant muzzle rise, proving to be a true "Chinese invention"!
