Diana's voice carried a hint of uncertainty as she asked, "Did Nathan ask you to stay?"
"Yes, I apologized to him this morning, and he asked me to stay and take care of him," Iris replied, exaggerating her story. She knew Diana wouldn't confront Nathan directly, so as long as she remained, she could craft any narrative she pleased.
Feeling somewhat smug, Iris thought Nathan still harbored feelings for her. Listening to Iris, Diana's mind raced. If Iris was indeed telling the truth and had managed to stay, then perhaps she did have some merit, especially if it increased the likelihood of her bearing Nathan's child.
For the sake of her cherished grandchild, Diana decided to temporarily forgive Iris's foolish actions. Her tone softened as she spoke, "Good girl, I've made some soup at home. Come over this afternoon to pick it up and take it to Nathan; he's still upset with me."
