Lady Wu took the child to the west room, where Cheng Yue had finished eating her egg and was now breastfeeding. Nursing is an instinct; even though Cheng Yue was simple-minded, she still knew how to feed her baby, and the naive young mother holding her child looked the part.

Qian Manxia had been watching her niece and, upon hearing some noise outside, couldn't bear to leave. When she saw Lady Wu enter, she asked, "Mother, what happened just now? Why did I hear a baby's cry and a dog barking?"

Lady Wu replied, "It was a little dog barking outside the courtyard. I opened the door and let it in." Holding out the child in her arms to Cheng Yue, she said, "Yueyue, this is also your child. You gave birth to two children today, a pair of twins of mixed sex."
