Chapter Text

"Huh. Dad sent us some mail," Yang stated idly as she walked into the dorm, scratching her head as she held a rather large mail tube and raised an eyebrow. She hefted it a few times, then looked at where Ruby seemed oddly excited for some reason… then again, she was just vibrating in Penny's lap and the two of them had been going out on coffee dates for the last two or three days so maybe she was just over caffeinated? "Wonder what's in this thing. It's weirdly heavy for something so small…"

"Aaaaaaaa I know exactly what it is!!!!!" Ruby shouted, leaping out of Penny's lap and vibrating even harder as she snatched the tube out of Yang's hands and shook it slightly until the end cap came off with a muted thump of pressure releasing. A few more excited shakes and…

Some kind of… fuzzy tube fell out.

Along with more cans of Gentleman's Best Friend branded dog food than anyone could ever consider reasonable. Because Gentleman's Best Friend was kinda tasteless and terrible, sort of like the dog equivalent of a bowl of porridge with some salt and vague beef jerky flavoring on the side.

Ruby would know, she'd eaten a lot of Gentleman's Best Friend as a kid. Because she had trouble not being a tiny little angry Beowolf puppy capable of biting through sheet steel.

Unfortunately, it was also the easiest dog food for her father to buy in bulk on a teacher's salary, and since Zwei had shit taste for a dog (really, what kind of weird dog preferred tasteless protein slurry over some other dog food that was actually nice?) ... well. It was the kind of dog food that most often stocked the cabinets at home.

Unless Ruby went out of her way to go to the pet store and buy bones to chew on. Or hunted her own meat to stuff in the freezer for when she got hungry.

"Zwei!" Weiss exclaimed suddenly, leaping out of bed and all but tackling the aforementioned dog, the fuzzy tube having popped into the form of the Xiao-Long family pet and started barking happily. "Ohhhh! My pwecious widdle baby!!! Come to mama! You're so cuuuuuute! Yes you are! Yes you are! Who's a good boy, who's a good boy! That's right it's you! You're the good boy oh yes you're such good boy you're so big and strong and adorable and I wanna just hug you forever and ever and ever and eeeee!!!!!"

"Well. I guess that's what it was," Yang deadpanned, watching as Weiss threw away all semblance of dignity as she rolled around on the floor and cuddled with Zwei as if it was the last thing she'd ever do, kicking her legs childishly and giggling like a madwoman while the dog himself licked at her face and drenched her in drool. "Weiss, I hope you realize I'm not kissing you again until you wash your face. That's nasty."

"It's an acceptable loss in exchange for puppy kisses oh come here you adorable little scamp mwah mwah mwah mwah mwah!"

Meanwhile, Blake had huddled herself on top of Ruby and Penny's bunk the moment that Zwei had revealed himself, and was holding out Mr. Frogger (Ruby's gigantic froggy pillow plushie thing that she absolutely insisted on having in her bed because how else was she supposed to sleep without her most stalwart and protective of companions?) out in front of her face like a shield, as if it would actually stop Zwei from latching onto her and using her as a pillow.

Fear the corgi. Dread it. Run from it. Puppy kisses arrive all the same.

"Zwei!"

"Zwei!"

"Zwei?" Yang sort of exclaimed, sort of grunted, scratching her head in confusion as Ruby and Penny joined Weiss on the floor, all but tackling the poor girl as Zwei started barking louder and licked at their faces as well, all three of them tickling and poking and petting the little black and white corgi with absolute adoration in the eyes, with Zwei eating it all up and returning the affection with nose bumps and puppy kisses and happy yips of delight. "Why did Dad send Zwei here? Oh- hey, there's a note."

She huffed, bending over and picking the note up off of the floor and idly kicking aside the can opener that came with the frankly ridiculous amount of packaging that had been sent over in a single mail tube (seriously, did their Dad compact it all in there by himself?) before reading it aloud.

"Hmm… 'Dear girls, I'm leaving on a mission for a few weeks so I'm sending Zwei to you to take care of. He's got all the food he needs and his favorite can opener. Please make sure he knows where the toilet is and also make sure he doesn't bite anyone hard enough to maim them. If you need to, you can let Qrow handle him for a while. Be safe, love you three (and Qrow I guess), Dad' ... huh. Well alright, that makes sense. I guess. Still weirded out on why he had to send Zwei in the mail instead of just getting Uncle Qrow to pick him up…" she paused, then scratched her head again as she looked around the dorm. "Oh yeah, we could actually leave him with Cinder. Wait, aren't we leaving on a mission later this week?"

"Yes we are indeed! Our first official mission!" Penny answered as she looked away from Zwei for a moment, smiling vaguely in Yang's direction while her hands continued to stroke his fur and pet his head while Ruby nuzzled into his back and Weiss pouted about having Zwei all but stolen from her arms. "I believe that, as we are considered to be at a level near or above the average second year students, Professor Ozpin has given our team special clearance to go on more intense grimm hunts!"

"That might be fun… I guess we can just go dump Zwei on CinCin and Uncle Qrow for a bit… I mean, unless we wanna bring him along? Dad did train Zwei as a licensed Huntsman companion… not that he has his safety vest with him or anything… or his battle gear," Yang muttered, continuing to scratch her head as she watched Zwei rather awkwardly. "Hmm…. Rubles, you remember how to make Zwei's battle gear, right?"

"Of course I do! I made his most recent set myself! And I made allowances for it if he got chubby! Which, he didn't, but it would have been sooooo cute if Zwei was a chubby widdle pupper aw if you were a chonker you'd be so round," Ruby giggled, picking Zwei up and cradling him in her arms like a baby as the blissed out corgi yipped gleefully in response.

Weiss, meanwhile, finally seemed to recover her dignity and stood up to go wash her face and change out of her pajama shirt, because she'd gotten dog drool all over the front and was also now a little dirty from rolling around on the floor.

At least she didn't have to deal with an utterly ridiculous amount of dirt in her hair now thanks to how short it was.

"Great so, we've got a couple of options then. Either we leave Zwei here with Uncle Qrow and Cinder until we get back-" "Bleh! No! I want Zwei with me!" "- or you need to make Zwei a new set of battle gear before we leave so he doesn't get hurt out there." "Yes!"

Yang snorted, chuckling a little as Ruby started playing with Zwei's paws, Penny somehow having acquired a bag of jerky treats and started feeding the corgi bit by bit.

Wait.

Where the hell had Penny gotten jerky treats from? Wait, was that just regular beef jerky?

"... Well, alright then. Penny, please don't feed Zwei too much jerky, he gets gas. I mean I guess it's fine because frankly the lil guy can eat just about anything but like… the gas," Yang shuddered as she shook her head, then climbed up to her own bunk as she kicked off her shoes and shucked her outerwear in favor of getting comfy in nothing but her tank top and boxers. "Blakeeeyyyy, you're in the wrong beeeed~"

"I'm not moving until that thing is gone," Blake hissed, shuddering and hiding behind Mr. Frogger again as Zwei barked up at her. "Cursed little beast!"

"... Blake, we really gotta talk about your fear of corgis at some point, this is getting ridiculous. Zwei's not that bad is he?"

"His legs are really stumpy and it really freaks me out okay!? I prefer it when dogs actually look like dogs , not weird fluffy marshmallow things that don't even come up to my knees!" Blake complained rather pathetically, whining with her ears flat against her head as she huddled behind Mr. Frogger and tried not to look in Zwei's direction. "I don't even like dogs, but corgis are just so weird!"

"... So… is that like… serious serious or like…?"

Blake shuddered then made a face. "... I can… live with it… but… blehghghgh… I know it's irrational I've just always had a weird fear of corgis…"

"... Right…"

"I can hear the disbelief in your voice, Yang. Shush. Let me have my phobias."

"... Alright, alright…"
