Bab 13: Hua's Nemesis

With darkness giving way to morning light, the sun casting a golden hue across Qianqing Hall as the Emperor arose, preparing to meet with his council of ministers to finalize pressing matters. His experience running an empire was not what he had imagined before his ascension to the throne. But with the help of trusted aides like Minister Cheng, the burden of governing the empire on his shoulders was somewhat reduced.

The ministers began arriving, gradually filling the courtroom as they stood in ranks, dressed in their finely bespoke court robes with conical hats to complement them. The air was thick with the scent of sandalwood incense, a calming prelude to the day's discussions.

The minor chatterings and discussions by the ministers in the Court room was suddenly interrupted as Eunuch Lu announced the arrival of the emperor,"The emperor has arrived!!" ..Eunuch Lu announced drawing the attention of everyone.

The Emperor entered with a regal grace, his presence commanding immediate attention. The ministers bowed deeply, a wave of reverence rippling through the hall. He took his seat on the grand throne, its dragon motifs shimmering in the morning light.

"Rise," the Emperor commanded, his voice resonating with authority.

As the ministers straightened, the Emperor glanced at Minister Cheng, who gave a subtle nod. This meeting would address the crucial matter of the princess selection, a topic that had weighed heavily on the Emperor's mind since his meeting with Minister Cheng.

"Today, we gather to deliberate on the matter of the princess selection," the Emperor began, his gaze sweeping across the assembled ministers. "After several thoughts on the unrest between us and our neighbouring state Ortai, I thought it best to consider another choice other than selecting a princess envoy to be a queen Consort to their king. So, I seek the wisdom of this council on how best to pursue a peace treaty with Ortai without sacrificing one of our own."..the Emperor concluded gazing at the council before him.

He knew better to not mention that his sudden change in decision was compelled by Minister Cheng, even though he appreciates the help, for it could bring an uproar of mixed opinions, and even apathy in the Court room.

A murmur of agreement and contemplation spread through the hall. The ministers, seasoned in the art of diplomacy and statecraft, understood the gravity of the situation. The Emperor's question hung in the air, a challenge and even an opportunity.

Minister Zhang, known for his strategic acumen, stepped forward. "Your Majesty, while sending a princess envoy has been a traditional means of securing peace, it is not the only path as you said. We might consider an exchange of scholars and artisans, establishing mutual respect and cultural ties that could pave the way for a lasting treaty."

The Emperor nodded thoughtfully. "An interesting proposition, Minister Zhang. Cultural exchange could indeed strengthen our bonds."

Minister Li, a stalwart advocate for military strength, spoke next. "Your Majesty, we must not appear weak. Our military might must be acknowledged. Perhaps a joint military exercise with the Kingdom of Ortai could serve as a gesture of goodwill and mutual respect, demonstrating our strength and willingness to cooperate."

The Emperor pondered this suggestion. "A display of strength, tempered with diplomacy. A delicate balance, Minister Li."

Minister Wei, another veteran known for his wisdom and experience, offered his perspective. "Your Majesty, both proposals have merit. However, true peace is built on trust and understanding. We could propose a series of high-level meetings between our officials and theirs, focusing on common goals and shared interests. Such an approach could lead to a more stable and enduring peace."

The Emperor's eyes brightened with approval. "Minister Wei, your suggestion resonates with me. Trust and understanding are indeed the foundations of peace."

He looked around the hall, judging the reactions of his ministers. "Let us combine these approaches. We will initiate a cultural exchange program, propose joint military exercises, and arrange high-level diplomatic meetings. This multifaceted strategy will demonstrate our commitment to peace without compromising our principles."

The ministers bowed in agreement, their respect for the Emperor deepening. His decision reflected wisdom, strength, and a genuine desire for lasting peace.

"Minister Cheng," the Emperor continued, "you will oversee the coordination of these initiatives. Ensure that our envoys are well-prepared and our intentions clearly communicated."

Minister Cheng bowed deeply already aware of the agenda..."It will be done, Your Majesty". Minister Cheng replied.

The meeting was concluded, with the Emperor feeling a renewed peace and calmness from within.

Back in the imperial harem, the atmosphere was filled with anticipation, curiosity and for some, fear. Such as the likes of Concubine Jia who wasn't able to take a complete breath as she couldn't wait to be at the morning gathering which was arranged by the Empress .

The emperor's decision on the candidate to be chosen for the princess envoy would be announced today during the morning gathering, a much-anticipated event that had stirred anticipation, curiosity, and unrest within the six palaces of the imperial harem. The air was thick with the scent of incense and the rustle of silks as each mistress of the palaces ; Changchun, Yanxi, Chengqian, Zhongcui, and Jingyang all prepared with ecstasy, their maids bustling around them in series of activity.

In Luyang Palace, Concubine Jia sat at her chamber, her fingers trembling as she attempted to fix a jade hairpin in her elaborate hairdo. Her maid, Lixin, stood by with a worried expression, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.

"Madam Cheng assured me that she would speak to Minister Cheng", Concubine Jia murmured, "But what if the emperor chooses her anyway? What if all our efforts were in vain?"... concubine Jia couldn't help but worry.

Lixin hesitated, unsure of how to comfort her mistress. "niang niang"...Lixin began , "Madam Cheng is very influential and trustworthy", she said softly. "We must have faith that she will persuade the minister, and he, in turn, will dissuade the emperor."

Concubine Jia nodded, but her anxiety was still visible. She was afraid and nervous, knowing that her daughter's future hung in the balance. If her daughter, the first princess, was chosen as the envoy, it would mean a life of uncertainty and potential danger. Jia's thoughts were interrupted by Lixin who signaled her it was almost time for the gathering.

In Changchun Palace, Tong and the Empress were engaged in a hushed conversation as they sat in the Empress's private chamber.

"The gathering today is going to be quite a spectacle niang niang," Tong said, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "Jia pin will be on edge, fearing the worst for her daughter, oh poor lady "

The Empress smiled, a cold and calculating look in her eyes. "It will be interesting to see how she handles herself. The emperor's decision will reveal much about the future dynamics within the palace". The Empress said as she glanced at her reflection in the mirror adjusting her ornaments.

As the Empress spoke, her other maids draped a rich brocade shawl over her shoulders, the deep crimson fabric contrasting with her pale skin. She exuded an air of authority and command with every inch the sovereign mistress of the imperial harem, forbidden city.

In Jingyang Palace, Concubine Hua and her maid, A'rou, were preparing with evident excitement. Hua pin stood before a large bronze mirror, admiring her reflection.

"Today will be the day we see Concubine Jia fall".. Concubine Hua said with a devilish smirk. "Her daughter will be chosen, and she will be left with no power, influence, nor favor".
