In the afternoon, Zhao Erhu sent the young ones to pick up firewood by the mountainside, while he continued to dig pits in the house. Lin Yue cleaned the bamboo shoots she had dug up yesterday in the kitchen. Having peeled off the husks, they filled an entire basin. She put them in a pot, covered it with a lid, and boiled them over high heat. The shoots probably needed about an hour and a half to cook through. During that long wait, Lin Yue went to her room to get a winnowing basket, needle, and thread, and started embroidering a pouch while keeping an eye on the fire.
