"Mr. Merlin, we have received your appointment. Thank you for your support and recognition. Please visit the manager's office before two o'clock tomorrow afternoon."

Upon seeing that his application had been approved, Merlin breathed a sigh of relief.

Death wasn't terrifying, but a death without meaning was.

He had once been an ordinary clerk, doing a job that wasn't particularly good but wasn't bad either.

His daily tasks involved calculating each person's wages and bonuses in the factory, determining how much tax the factory was supposed to pay, and figuring out what benefits and bonuses everyone should receive.

Every now and then, he would earn some extra income, such as cooking the books for the factory owners and managing some legal tax evasion for their accounts.

For someone of reasonable intelligence, this job was quite easy.
