Suddenly the room erupted into laughter but Charm couldn't even crack a smile.
Watching those guards upset her and Charm wished she had the courage to walk over to them and kick the table over but she didn't.
Instead she just stood in the new line and seethed quietly, she had nothing in common with the new group and she felt her loneliness increase.
She missed Janet, she wondered briefly if her best friend and her family were okay.
Now she would give anything to be back home to be listening to Janet yap about her boyfriend problems than to be stuck on the warship.
There was a steady hum of voices in the room as each group of women got acquainted with each other and Charm's group was no exception.
Charm was the last to join the group and since she wasn't being particularly friendly by introducing herself first instead of sulking the other girls turned their backs on her.
"I'm telling you I overheard those female guards talking," said a young woman near Charm. "They are calling the incident the rapture and saying that those demons didn't just appear at Isla Serpiente but there were different spawns in cities all over the world and the death toll is high."
"I'm not surprised. I was so scared, I saw other students being killed from my dorm window."
"What about our families back home? I hope they are okay."
The other girls were lucky to have that safety net of family, Charm mused.
Charm often felt alone and abandoned in the world.
Especially now since her last known relative, her Uncle, had been declared dead in the line of duty by the government.
"I don't see the point of worrying about family, for all we know they are dead. I'm just thankful we didn't die and that we are safe."
"When that black hole appeared the sky darkened and those carnivorous insect demons came out and started to attack. I thought we were all doomed."
"Demons…that's just absurd," whispered her friend.
"We are at war with demons. How can you still doubt what you saw with your own two eyes."
"I just think it's weird that everyone is so laid back, shouldn't we be panicking more considering what we just saw with our own eyes."
"Think about it, maybe all those movies, books and tv shows that we have been watching all along have desensitized us to the truth, what have we been fed throughout the years?"
"That our government is lying to us."
"Exactly, thanks to the media when something like this happens we are already somewhat mentally prepared to deal with it."
"I think it's more something to do with the place, maybe it's in the air we breathe, the pills we took earlier or even the shower."
"You have a suspicious mind."
"Considering what happened earlier we are all way too calm."
"Are you saying that they drugged us?"
"Maybe, who knows. I just find it weird that after morning like what we experienced today we are just calmly following orders. I'm thinking more along the lines that we unconsciously already feel defeated. We saw what happened today and we lost hope. So now it's easy for organizations like this to take advantage of us and lead us like cattle to our slaughter."
"See…I told you… listen to me, if you don't want to die… It's time to repent.. The end of the world is at hand..All of you that used to laugh at me for preaching the good news…should be looking to me for answers," interrupted another skinny girl, her eyes were glazed over and she looked high.
"Shut up… you aren't the only one that reads and besides if you're still here with the rest of us. It means you were left behind, neither you nor the rest of those zealots can help us, all of you are just trash."
"What the… who are you calling trash!"
Skinny girl reached for the tomboy looking one that called her trash and the two of them started to tussle pulling on each other's hair.
The girl who spoke first pulled them apart and said, "knock it off you two before I call the guards over here myself."
Such a threat sobered up those two girls pretty fast, the bible thumper moved away from the group.
Sitting down in a corner by herself and loudly muttering a prayer repeatedly to herself, while shaking uncontrollably.
To Charm, the only high this girl had was a spiritual high.
Still there were other girls in the room that looked like they were about to snap from being separated for too long from the illegal substances that they abused.
"In under an hour east of our school was partially destroyed," added another conspiratorially.
The girls were huddling together and speaking low so that their voices wouldn't bother or attract the attention of the guards.
"Yeah.. our death count is going to be high too, I predict perhaps around 600 dead and 200 missing, Isla Serpiente is a rather large school. I used to joke that we could get lost on this campus and never be found."
"Missing?"
"That's true, before the Spirit Warriors came and closed the entrance to the black hole some of those locust demons were dragging humans down into that black hole."
"But why?"
"At first I couldn't understand what attracted the locust demons until I got here. It's what they call spirit power. The locust demons went after those that show any signs of having spirit power."
"She's not lying," interrupted Charm. "We are all here to do this test because we too have spirit power."
"She speaks," teased another girl from the group.
"Knock it off, is there anything else you can tell us about this test," asked the first girl who had already made herself the de facto leader and had the other girls looking to her for inspiration.
"From what I heard," offered Charm confidently. "The test will be checking for three things, agility, reasoning ability and spirit power level."
Thanks Miguel, she said silently.
"That's so vague, we still don't have a clue what we are about to face in that simulation room."
"Well we are a team, so let's just work together," said Charm.
"What do you think I've been doing, trying to build team morale but ours is flagging and we haven't even entered the room yet."
"We don't even know if it's a team thing for all we know it's every man for themselves."
"Warning!" said the voice from the intercom. "The doors will open in the next ten minutes and the only advice we offer is just to survive until the end of the test."
"What in the world," cried a girl.
There were expletives and shouts of outrage, that sentiment was being echoed all over the room.
Girls were getting heated and voices were being raised as they argued about what to do next.
In the blink of an eye ten minutes passed and the doors to the simulation room finally opened and no one was prepared for what they saw.
Suddenly the female guards became alert and got into position.
All of them looked menacing with their weapons in hand, looking ready to fire on command.
The leader yelled out, "move! Move! It's 5:00 p.m. You have ten minutes to get inside before the door closes. Anyone left behind in the room with us will have automatically failed the test."
