Bab 41: Dark desires of the damned deviant, part 2

Jun nodded.

"And what about the 'World of Words'? If you read those stories, does that mean you have knowledge of the future?" Koto asked, smirking. "Mind sharing?"

"Sure. If that helps you survive here…"

The most relevant stories didn't take too long to retell. Ara Jun, Koto found, really transmigrated into a priestess, although she chose to wear cat ears at her own volition. Koto wondered if she looked as beautiful in the previous world as in this one.

He also listened to his own story and quickly decided to avoid being involved in it at all costs. Koto didn't want any treasures—just to live his peaceful life. Whether his definition of "peace" fit inside Japan's law or not.

"Thank you for all this. Are you sure you don't want anything to eat or drink? You talked quite a lot here, Ara-san," Koto asked eventually.

She shook her head negatively. "No. I mean… I'm busy. Really—there's not much time. So, Tanabe-san, will you agree to help me?"

"Well, Ara-san… Is the Fourth God really that trustworthy? I think that if not for those demons and their Contracts, we'd be dead now because of him. And he still WANTS to see us dead, isn't he?"

Demons were really helpful to Koto so far—especially Marble. The demon explained to him the basics of this world and what the Contracts were, as well as helped in other things. All Marble wanted for his service was being given a person to eat once in a while.

"Demons are just as evil, and can easily trick a person," Jun said, shaking her head. "I feel that evil every day! It spreads like some kind of miasma—right inside my soul!"

She suddenly jumped to her feet and swung her fist in the air with anger, before blushing and sitting back down.

"I mean, um, I have a demon inside me, too. I feel his hunger. Even if he's helpful, that's only because he gets to walk in the human realm and eat."

Was Jun really such a spitfire under the outward coldness? Koto liked her more and more. But he wasn't going to let this attraction cloud his decision.

"I'm sorry, but I won't help with your plan," he said. "Don't want to risk it. Good luck with it, though. If it works, everyone will be grateful."

'Everyone but me,' Koto thought. 'But I doubt this will work at all. That naive girl is just letting herself be tricked. I doubt I will see her again.'

***

Less than a week passed before Koto heard about Jun's death.

It was night, and he was sleeping, when his dreams changed into something more vivid and gruesome than they were. He saw a town street, where Jun's pale body was sprawled on the ground in a pool of her own blood. One of her eyes stared at the sky in terror; instead of the other was a bloody golden flower.

"You will be next if you don't act," someone said behind Koto.

He turned around and saw a young man, approximately of his own age, staring back at him with a smile. The man's face looked familiar—a moment later, Koto recognized it.

"No way… Kugutsu, is that you? You look nine years older, but that's still your face—I remember it well! It can't be. I'm dreaming… Ah. That's right, this is just a dream. Just a dream."

After realizing this, Koto felt much calmer. He let out a breath of relief. "Damn, my dreams have been all kinds of fucked up since I appeared in this world. Not that it's surprising."

"This is a dream, but that doesn't mean you should dismiss it so easily," Shin said, before his figure fogged over and he transformed into another person.

Koto didn't know the teenager he became. If he did, he must've forgotten that extremely nondescript face, anyway. But now that he spoke, Koto recognized that pleasant tone. Relief he felt before disappeared in an instant.

The Fourth God! Aratanawaru, as he called himself.

Aratanawaru had appeared in Koto's dreams before. Those were weird conversations, which Koto tried to not participate in at all, ignoring the Fourth's presence instead. After a couple of days, he stopped appearing at all.

Until today.

"This just gives me more reasons to dismiss everything," Koto said, turning away from Aratanawaru. "No matter what Jun said, I don't trust you."

"That's understandable," Aratanawaru said softly. "But I act in your best interest right now. Shin had appeared in this world and already killed three people from your world. What's worse, he let his Contracted demon eat their souls… Ara Jun, that poor soul, even killed herself to avoid this fate."

Koto shook his head.

"That's not my problem."

"But it will be. Shin aims to kill every other transmigrator in the same manner. He believes that this is his only way out of this place, and freedom is a powerful motivator. Isn't it the same for you? Shin is about to come after you, and soon. He's about to gain power that will allow him to find you, no matter where you hide. But you have an opportunity to kill him before that happens—and return home!"

Koto didn't respond, instead staring ahead of himself. His gaze was inevitably drawn to Jun's body. She looked beautiful even in death—like a Renaissance painting. Her clothes were in disarray, showing her collarbones. Koto wanted to touch the glimpse of skin there, and undress her further…

If she was still warm, it wouldn't have been too different from fucking her while she was alive, right? Koto never tried this before, but he wasn't opposed to experimentation.

Aratanawaru clicked his tongue.

"Very well, Tanabe-san. If you need additional motivation to act, I will give it to you."

Koto didn't have any warning. The dream shattered around him, pulling him out of his fantasizing, but when Koto was brought to reality…

He wasn't Tanabe Koto. He was Ara Jun.
