The shrill cries of children echoed through the deathly still camp like a clap of thunder.

"This is not good!"

Huang An jerked awake, his eyes just opening as he impulsively rolled to his side and grabbed his spear.

Looking around, it was still pitch black, but the sound of human voices intermingled with the clash of weapons came from all directions.

What time is it now?

Before Huang An could react, suddenly, clusters of tiny yellow dots came into his view.

Torches!

Are we surrounded?

Then came the roaring laughter and cheers of triumph.

Huang An turned pale. Looking left, right, up, and down, all he could see was the flickering light of torches.

We are surrounded!

This was utterly bizarre.

Judging by the darkness of the sky, it was probably between four and five in the morning. It was too early for thieves to strike on the roads. And they have come with torches?

Where is the night guard?
