"Would you like to call your mother?" Officer Chen offered.

Zhou Tao hesitated, but when he thought about not seeing her for three years, he finally said, "Let's make a call."

"I'm afraid…I'll spend three years in prison helpless and miserable."

"You've brought this on yourself," Shen Lan coldly interjected, handing him a phone, "Go ahead…I'd like to see how you break the news to your mother."

After Zhou Tao took the phone and muttered a 'thank you', it took a while before his mother, Zhou Yi, answered.

Despite being his mother, Zhou Yi didn't speak until Zhou Tao finally broke the silence, "Mom, are you well?"

Zhou Yi lay in bed, unable to move. How could she possibly be well?

She laughed bitterly before admitting, "I've broken my leg, Mom. I can't possibly be alright."
