Despite William Cole driving rather fast, they were held up by traffic and arrived at the restaurant where Archie Dawn and Eloise Torres had reserved a table about forty minutes later.

Present were Archie Dawn, Eloise Torres, their eldest daughter Valerie Dawn, son-in-law Eddie Brews, second daughter Elsie Dawn, and son-in-law Maxim Lawson. All six of them were there.

But apart from Archie Dawn and Eloise Torres, the rest wore solemn expressions that were far from pleasant.

Maxim Lawson was particularly morose. When he saw William Cole enter, he looked as though he'd seen his mortal enemy.
