Ellen Young and Ruffy Smith first went back to their respective homes.

The little girl's situation didn't affect Ellen much, as she already knew the outcome.

So when she received the news the next morning that the couple had sneaked away in the middle of the night, Ellen didn't feel anything special.

Early in the morning, the village was noisy, and everyone came out to see what the fuss was all about.

Someone had dressed Lily in a new set of child's clothes, and the tiny child just sat quietly on the steps of Aunt Hailey's house.

Without crying or fussing.

The people surrounding her were all talking at once.

"What shall we do now, the folks have run off, leaving behind a girl, claiming she's Ellen's niece?"

"What niece, there's not a shred of relation, Hordy Young isn't even their biological child."
