Bab 43: Great Fortune

After beating the hound to a half-dead state Renji asked one last time, the hound's eyes were barely open. He was sleeping on his blood, while Renji was covered with the hound's blood. Even though the hound was in such a condition, he raised his lifeless eyes and stared right at Renji's eyes as if saying 'I will never submit'.

"Alright, if that's your choice so be it. Sigh" Siad Renji as he sighed, he could tell even if he kept beating the hound it would not submit. The hound's eyes were full of conviction, so Renji decided to just kill the hound and put him out of his misery. He grabbed a stick that was on the ground and stabbed the hound in its head, his skull was already cracked because of the severe beating he received so the stick went straight through its skull.

With that the hound breathed its last breath before dying, Renji didn't know what to feel as he would have been happy if he could have tamed the beast, but it didn't work out that way.

Notifications started to appear before his eyes as the hound died, that was nothing special as he had leveled up many times during this period of hunt, but what surprised Renji the most was that he had suddenly unlocked a new skill. He hurriedly opened the status screen to check what new skill he unlocked and he was left speechless, his mouth was agape as he was unable to speak.

[Wa..Wait what is this? Wow, this will help you immensely. With this you can do it.] Said Lisa her voice was cheery, she seemed delighted and shocked at the same time. Renji remained stunned while Lisa mumbled to herself with shock.

Description: You can control the soul of anyone to make them do your bidding, the soul that you make them your subjects using this skill, they will help you in all of your battles. As long as you live, the souls of your subjects will never perish. They grow stronger as they absorb souls, they get stronger as you grow stronger. They will always only obey your command as long as you live. A part of your power will also be bestowed on your subjects. You and your subjects will have a soul bond.

Requirements:

1. The target you want to turn into your subjects, must have been killed by your own hands.

2. The target cannot be a Realm above you.

3. Some of the enemies' souls may not be able to endure the transition, so sometimes you will fail to make some of them your subjects. It might even fail if your target is stronger than you.

"What does realm mean?" asked Renji in confusion, he had never heard of the term being used before anywhere.

[Other than the level, what is it that the status shows, as your realm?] Lisa asked back.

Renji asked with a bit of disappointment in his eyes, he wanted to have a strong beast like the hound as part of his army.

[No, that is not what It means, what comes after the star? Moon, right? That is what we call realms, which means you can't control the souls of enemies that are in the moon and sun realms. So, you can try to use the skill on the hound.] said Lisa cheerily, she was very happy for Renji after reading the skill description.

'Soul puppets' Renji used the skill without wasting any more time, he wanted to test if he could make the hound his soldier.

Suddenly right after using the skill, an eerie sound of screaming came from the hound who was dead. Seeing this scene Renji took a step back, couldn't understand what was going on but one thing was certain. Renji could feel the soul of the hound suddenly after killing it himself, he was confused as to what would happen when his questions were answered.

"WWOOOOO" a sound of Howling came as the ground below the hound started to glow, a strange pattern could be seen under the corpse of the hound the pattern was glowing while black smoke started to come out of the pattern. In an instant, the area was filled with dark smoke, but in an instant, the smoke disappeared as it looked like something jumped out of the hound's corpse.

"Is this it?" Renji questioned himself as he was looking at the hound bowing before him. Rather than calling it a hound, it would be more appropriate to call it a specter of shorts. The hound was black except for its grey eyes which glowed in the dark, and rather than having hair, he had black smoke coming out of his body. The scene was surreal but his bowing to Renji meant the skill had succeeded.

"Can you use elements?" asked Renji, but as soon as he asked, he was shocked to his core. The hound made the same armor that he created while fighting with Renji when he was still alive. But that wasn't the thing that surprised Renji the most, what surprised him the most was that, as soon as he asked his question, he could immediately feel the answer.

The wolf didn't talk nor did it send a message to Renji through any means, Renji could just understand the hound as if he was connected with his soul itself. Renji thought 'This must be what the description mentioned by saying, you will have a soul bond with your subjects' as he realized.

"Did you feel that too Lisa?" asked Renji as he wondered if he was the only one who felt that connection.

[Yes, I did after all for now I have resided in your soul, I will feel and see what you feel and see what you see.] said Lisa in a low voice as if she was thinking about something.

[This is so weird] said Lisa as she seemed frustrated after thinking about something for so long.

"What is?" Renji asked as he was inspecting the hound. He looked like a child in front of the hound as the hound was more than double his size.

[Your class I mean, it is like a necromancer but at the same time, it is not. Necromancers can never be this strong, they can only resurrect one realm below them and their undead become a lot weaker after resurrecting. So, your class is not necromancy, I have never heard of such a class in my entire life. That is what has been bugging me and on top of that you have some restrictions that I can't wrap my head around myself. Ugghh, it feels like all this thinking will kill me. how could I have lived so long and still be surprised by something? …..] Lisa kept on rambling as Renji too fell into his thoughts, he too was confused but didn't worry about the things he had no control over.

'When you can't control what's happening, challenge yourself to control the way you respond to what's happening. That's where your power is.' That's what David always used to say whenever Renji felt sad about being powerless.
