Huge pillars of smoke continued to pour out from the depths of the trench. They rushed out of the trench and continued to surge upwards until they finally became sparse and disappeared.
Lin thought that it was something harmful and should not be approached, so she ran away. However, the creatures around her reacted the opposite. Many small trilobites crawled out from the beach and gathered around the trench. They waved their limbs and ate the scattered smoke and dust.
Is this edible?
While Lin was wondering, she noticed that many single-celled creatures and some jellyfish had approached the smoke, but they did not enter the center. They only swam around the pillars of smoke. Lin thought that they were also collecting dust.
Perhaps there were some edible substances in the smoke?
Lin was not surprised. After all, there were creatures that could eat everything. However, it would be great to be able to use such a large amount of energy …
Leviathan had created a new type of soldier called the 'Analyzer'. It had a round body, very similar to the Devourer. It had a large mouth, but there were no teeth in it. Instead, it was filled with tiny tentacles. These tiny tentacles could analyze whether the substances it came into contact with were harmful or beneficial to Lin's cells.
Like the jellyfish around it, the Analyzer swallowed a lot of dust in the smoke and used the tentacles in its mouth to sense the composition of the dust.
Lin could feel from the Analyzer's tentacles that some of the dust was harmless, while some were harmful. However, not all cells could digest the harmless dust.
Lin's cells had different digestive abilities. For example, the Acid-Injector and the Exploding Sphere could decompose a lot of substances, including many non-living substances. Meanwhile, the basic cells could only digest the debris of other cells or white paste.
Come to think of it, Lin had not seen white paste for a long time …
Lin did not know the exact meaning of digestion. Her current research only told her that it was a process from decomposition to recombination. She used some substance in her body to dissolve the substance she swallowed and recombine it into the same composition as her body.
The process was very complicated. However, the Acid-Injector and the Exploding Sphere's dissolving fluid obviously helped her cells increase the efficiency of decomposition. After being able to use oxygen, Lin also noticed that her cells sometimes used oxygen to decompose food.
Just like the dust in the smoke, it also needed oxygen to decompose.
Lin did not understand the process of decomposition yet, but she knew that the smoke coming out of the trench was actually food!
They produced so much food that there was no reason for them not to occupy it.
The Leviathan would not stop its journey, and the base did not have to come here. Lin could directly build a new base here.
Lin asked Leviathan to create a special item in its body. It was called the 'Seed of Base'.
This was a sphere made up of 80% fat cells, 10% basal cells, and 10% glandular cells. The basal cells inside could use the fat cells to quickly divide and grow into a small base.
A small base would then produce soldiers and hunt for food. Eventually, it would grow into a large base.
This type of base was different from the original one. In the end, it would grow into a triangular structure. All the organs would be contained inside, and the outer layer would be protected by a hard shell.
'Hmm, that's a pretty good plan …' Lin decided that she would place a Seed Base in any area that was rich in nutrients in the future.
If that base ran out of resources, Lin would have the base decompose itself and form a group of transporters to transport all the nutrients to the nearest base.
Leviathan placed the Seed of Base in the sand at the edge of the trench and ate a few small trilobites nearby to prevent them from affecting the base.
The glandular cells of the Seed of Base would secrete a layer of crustaceous substance that surrounded the Seed of Base. Then, the basal cells inside would begin to change. After the transformation, they could open an opening in the shell to release troops or extend tentacles.
When the base was about to grow, Lin would melt the crustaceous layer and replace it with a bigger one.
Although it was a little troublesome, it provided good protection.
After the crustaceous substance was secreted, it would be almost invulnerable. Leviathan could then leave.
'So, where should I go next?'
Leviathan slowly swam over the dark abyss of the trench. What appeared in front of Lin was still a white beach. A group of looming boulders in the distance attracted Lin's attention.
'Let's go there and take a look.'
Leviathan was not swimming very fast. Lin wanted to swim while looking for a suitable place to place the Seed of Base.
Most of the creatures on this beach were starfish and anemones. There was nothing special about them.
When there was still some distance between them and the boulders, Lin began to speed up. Then, she suddenly noticed some small creatures with flat leaf-shaped bodies swimming towards her.
'Are they flatworms? They don't look the same. '
Lin noticed that these small creatures were about the same size as flatworms, but their bodies were longer. Their mouths were round, and there were several rings of sharp teeth on them.
'Let's call them round-mouthed flatworms then.'
Lin ignored them at first and continued to swim forward. After a while, she noticed that these round-mouthed flatworms were following her. Their numbers were increasing.
'This doesn't look good …'
Lin wanted to speed up, but the round-mouthed flatworms were much faster. Leviathan was too large to shake them off. More round-mouthed flatworms swam over from afar. By now, there were already over a thousand of them.
Looking at the teeth on their mouths, Lin knew what these creatures wanted to do.
And so, Lin made the first move. She swung all of Leviathan's biting tentacles and bit down on a few round-mouthed flatworms nearby, tearing them to pieces.
In an instant, all of the round-mouthed flatworms swarmed over!
Their round mouths were like suction cups. Once the round-mouthed flatworms sucked on something, they would twist their bodies and use their teeth to scrape off the flesh of their target.
Lin immediately retaliated. Leviathan swung its tentacles and bit down on the round-mouthed flatworms that got close.
These creatures were not like jellyfish that would ignore everything else. The round-mouthed flatworms seemed to have a strong sense of companionship. Once one of their companions was killed, they would attack the target with all their might. Countless round-mouthed flatworms were sucked onto Leviathan's tentacles. The tentacles without shells were instantly covered in wounds.
Lin could instantly coagulate the blood vessels around the wounds to prevent the cells from gushing out. However, the round-mouthed flatworms were unable to damage Leviathan's shell. So, they attacked the tentacles together. If this continued, the tentacles would be torn apart.
The round-mouthed flatworms were very fast. Normal troop types would not be able to catch up to them easily, so this was the only way.
Lin quickly assembled a disc-shaped troop type. Their bodies were covered in a hard shell. There was a circle of curved blades around the edges of the discs. They could spin their bodies rapidly by spraying water. They were called … flying saws!
The openings on the Leviathan's body opened up. It let out several flying saws. These flying saws were much faster than the round-mouthed flatworms. They were also very efficient at killing enemies. The flying saws only needed to spin their bodies and charge into the flatworms, then they could easily use the curved blades around them to shred the flatworms into pieces.
Countless remains and flatworm cells floated in the water. The flying saws' attack had defeated the round-mouthed flatworms. They were unable to damage the flying saws' hard shell so they could not retaliate. So, they started to retreat.
Even though the round-mouthed flatworms were very united when attacking, they would scatter and flee in different directions. Lin believed that this was a more effective way to escape. This prevented her from chasing after all of them at once.
Lin did not chase after them. Instead, she retrieved the flying saws and released the collectors to consume the remains of the round-mouthed flatworms around them. At the same time, they healed the wounds on the tentacles.
These things appeared to be very smart.
Earlier, the flatworms that Lin encountered were able to create giant stone circles, but now, these were able to attack as a group.
Could there be some kind of special secret on their bodies?
Lin studied one of the round-mouthed flatworms that was relatively intact. She noticed that the ganglion in its head was exceptionally large. This could no longer be called a 'ganglion'. Instead, there was a new term to describe this structure.
'Brain'.
Other than that, this round-mouthed flatworm was similar to the previous flatworms. There was a cylindrical structure inside its body that extended all the way from its head to its tail.
Lin did not understand. Why would they put the shell inside their body? Wasn't it just to take up space?
There was also a new term to describe this structure.
'Spine'.
