Bab 25: The Visit
After the Viper grasped the structure of the sais, Max was there to assist.
Suddenly, Max felt a palpitation, as if someone were observing him. It was an intuitive feeling.
Without hesitation, Max promptly opened a door and entered the alternate space.
The sensation vanished as soon as he entered.
Max turned and exited the laboratory. Everything appeared normal outside, so the source of the palpitations wasn't there.
Max began to suspect that it might be Professor X. In the movie's Easter egg, after Wolverine's departure, he encountered Magneto and Professor X. Magneto repaired his steel claws, and then Wolverine joined forces with Professor X and Magneto to prepare for the impending battle between Mutants and Sentinels. Considering the timing, Professor X might have learned about their existence from Wolverine, so the feeling of being watched earlier was likely Professor X's doing.
Even though Professor X had his own principles and wouldn't easily intrude into others' minds or locations, this sensation made Max uncomfortable. No one would want someone to have the ability to probe their memories and whereabouts at will.
Professor X's telepathic abilities were incredibly potent. While Professor X might not have been malicious or even deliberately making himself known this time, what about in the future?
Gazing at the alternate space, Max had a sudden idea.
The alternate space appeared to be capable of shielding Professor X's telepathy, but he couldn't remain there indefinitely. If he were to be ambushed, it would be too late to react. Even if Professor X didn't do this, there could be others with telepathic abilities, and Max couldn't expect everyone to be as rule-abiding and respectful as Professor X.
How could he isolate his mind from telepathic intrusion?
Should he wear a helmet like Magneto? It was unsightly, impractical for constant use, and risked being removed.
"If I can place my mind or consciousness in an alternate space or create a door externally, it should be able to shield my mind from telepathic abilities, right?"
"However, two challenges exist."
"One, the door must be maintained at all times, even if it's not in use. It must persist, or it would be pointless."
"The second is that I haven't perfected the structure of the door yet. If I were to create a door right now, it might only be on the physical level, not the level of consciousness."
Although it appeared quite challenging, it might not be impossible. After all, there were many avenues for Devil Fruit abilities to evolve. Previously, Max had planned to develop the fruit abilities once the situation stabilized. Now, it seemed that he could focus on other abilities first. This particular ability needed to be developed quickly, as it was a matter of his own safety.
It was akin to a battlefield strategy—if an enemy was too formidable, he wouldn't engage, but rather evade and seek opportunities to strike later. First and foremost, he must ensure he remained outside the enemy's striking range, as his life could be forfeit at any moment. Life was precious, and one couldn't afford to be overly cautious.
"I'll begin with sustaining the existence of the door!"
Starting from this aspect, Max aimed to create the "gate of the soul." To achieve this, he needed to overcome two challenges. Beginning with the continuous opening of the door was a crucial step. Even if he couldn't create the "gate of the soul," it would still be a valuable asset in battles and daily life.
Observing the Viper outside the different space, who was still occupied with his work, Max waved his hand to generate a door right before his eyes.
The door materialized.
Max refrained from pushing the door open and waited, observing...
"Ten seconds!"
"If the door remains unused, it will vanish after ten seconds."
Max pondered for a moment and decided to create another door. This time, he pushed it open and stepped outside.
"Five seconds!"
"If the door to the outside world is not closed, it will automatically shut in five seconds and disappear."
"So, what if I create a door in the external world but don't open it?"
The door appeared once more.
This time, Max refrained from touching the door, as if he were inside the door, quietly calculating the passage of time.
"Eight seconds, just eight seconds. Is the duration of the door's existence different from inside and outside the door when I don't touch it?"
"Why is this?" Max furrowed his brow in thought. He vaguely recalled that using Devil Fruit Abilities consumed physical strength. If it were a regular door opening, the physical strength required would be fixed. However, if the discrepancy in time between the space inside and outside the door affected the duration, it might mean that maintaining the door's existence could consume physical strength.
Max once again conjured a door in the air, but this time he deliberately slowed down to meticulously sense how the door was created, aiming to understand how it could remain connected to him rather than being a disposable door like before.
The door materialized.
Max was well-versed in the creation and structure of the door, but he still struggled to grasp how to maintain a connection with it.
After eight seconds, the door vanished on its own.
Undeterred, Max began crafting it anew.
