Because it couldn't find its true target, the will-o'-the-wisp controlled by the Chandelure suddenly became chaotic. Taking advantage of this, several Decidueye charged forward, using Brave Bird to launch a fierce attack.
Dozens of Decidueye rushed in at once. Despite Salem repeatedly shouting, "Dodge quickly!" the panicked Chandelure had no idea where to hide and was struck head-on.
After taking multiple hits from the Decidueye's Spirit Shackle and Shadow Claw, followed by a Brave Bird attack, the Chandelure, which wasn't particularly good at defense, finally wobbled and fell to the ground.
As the battle ended, intense applause erupted from the sidelines.
Salem smiled as he put away the Chandelure and walked over, saying, "As expected, Gym Leader Shimizu's reputation is well-deserved. I'm sure today's battle has been very beneficial to everyone."
Yuga humbly replied, "Gym Leader Salem flatters me. It's all about mutual learning. I've learned a lot from you as well."
Seeing Yuga's sincere tone, Salem's smile widened. He then asked, "It's still early, would Gym Leader Shimizu be interested in a couple more battles? Many people are eager to challenge you."
Salem signaled toward the sidelines with his eyes. Yuga saw many people eager to take their shot, so he smiled and said, "Sure, let's have a few more rounds. I don't have anything else to do anyway."
By saying this, Yuga clearly gave Salem enough face. With someone of his stature participating, even just making an appearance would add great value to the gym exchange event hosted by the Viridian Gym.
Seeing Yuga agree, Salem shouted toward the sidelines, "Who else would like to challenge Gym Leader Shimizu?"
As soon as those words were spoken, the sidelines buzzed with excitement. The gym leaders here all recognized Yuga. Who wouldn't want to spar with such a high-level expert? However, most of them were not as strong as the already-defeated Salem, and hesitation soon spread among them. People like Salem, who didn't care about losing and were only focused on learning, were in the minority. The majority cared deeply about winning or losing.
"I'll do it!"
At that moment, a person and their Pokémon descended from the sky, landing directly in the arena. It was Sabrina and her Alakazam.
Seeing Sabrina fly up into the arena with her psychic powers, Yuga gained a more direct understanding of her progress. Without substantial mental strength, it was impossible to fly like that.
Sabrina's fame in the Kanto region was huge, earning her the title "Psychic Queen." She was known for being cold, domineering, and reclusive. Her volunteer challenge immediately sparked discussions among the crowd.
After Sabrina entered the arena, Salem, quite aware, stepped aside.
As Alakazam floated to the center of the arena, Sabrina said, "The battle can begin."
...
[ Alakazam ]
Type: Psychic
Ability: Synchronize
Gender: Female
Potential: Indigo
Level: 76
Moves: Confusion, Kinesis, Disable, Teleport, Psybeam, Reflect, Psycho Cut, Recover, Psyshock, Psychic, Calm Mind, Light Screen, Thunder Wave, Shadow Ball, Taunt, Dazzling Gleam, Signal Beam.
...
Compared to their first meeting, Alakazam's strength had drastically improved.
Hearing Sabrina's words, Yuga raised his hand, and Gengar appeared beside him with a mischievous grin, drawing a stunned reaction from the crowd. They hadn't noticed how Gengar had appeared.
Gengar mischievously flew into the arena and made a face at Alakazam. However, Alakazam, like its trainer, had a deadpan expression and didn't react to Gengar at all, which made Gengar feel a little bored.
"The match begins!"
At the referee's command, the cheerful Gengar and the emotionless Alakazam immediately entered battle mode.
Boom!
Gengar's Shadow Ball collided with Alakazam's Psychic, creating a violent explosion in the air.
Both Gengar and Alakazam were skilled in long-range special attacks, making their long-distance exchange very captivating.
At first, the Shadow Ball and Psychic were just probes and greetings, but the next attacks were much fiercer.
Gengar leaped into the air, looking down at Alakazam from above. The earlier playful and carefree demeanor was completely gone. Its eyes were cold, and both of its chubby arms extended, each producing a Shadow Ball. The Shadow Balls grew larger and larger, soon becoming as big as two small houses.
"Gengar!"
With a swift motion, Gengar waved its arms, sending the two massive Shadow Balls one after the other toward Alakazam.
Alakazam disappeared with Teleport, and the two huge Shadow Balls crashed into the ground, instantly creating massive craters. Salem, watching from the sidelines, felt a chill run down his spine.
"This is going to take a lot of work to repair later."
When Alakazam reappeared, it was already behind Gengar. With a flick of its spoon, a beam of colorful energy shot directly toward Gengar.
However, it seemed that Gengar had eyes on the back of its head. Without needing Yuga's command, it dodged the attack by leaping outward, causing Alakazam's Psybeam to miss.
Gengar had clearly predicted Alakazam's location after its Teleport. This was one of the advantages of frequent battles with the Pokémon from the Ecopark.
There weren't many Pokémon that could use Teleport in the wild, but many of the Pokémon in Yuga's Ecopark could. After using Teleport in battle, the most common location for them to appear was behind their opponent.
After leaping out, Gengar immediately retaliated with a Shadow Ball.
Alakazam couldn't dodge in time and quickly crossed its two spoons in front of its chest. A transparent Light Screen appeared, deflecting the Shadow Ball.
At the same time, Alakazam took advantage of the opening to use Disable. Gengar, who had planned to use another Shadow Ball, suddenly found that it could no longer release it.
But Gengar was quick-witted. The moment it couldn't use its Shadow Ball, it released an Dark Pulse. Although Alakazam's Light Screen was still active, the attack still swept it away.
As Alakazam landed, Gengar, its face twisted in a grimace, shot a massive black eye toward the sky. The spectators, watching from the sidelines, felt their skin crawl.
The black eye rapidly descended toward Alakazam, and Alakazam immediately realized it couldn't move. Sabrina, too, quickly noticed this.
As Gengar's next wave of attacks was about to land, a surge of purple light suddenly flared up in Sabrina's eyes.
She and Alakazam's psychic link intensified, causing Alakazam's psychic power to surge to unprecedented levels.
Buzz!
Alakazam's psychic power erupted, instantly breaking free from the black eye's hold. Using Teleport, Alakazam vanished from its position just as Gengar's Dark Pulse missed, creating another large crater in the ground.
Having successfully escaped, Alakazam countered with Psychic. This time, it had learned its lesson and didn't appear near Gengar. Instead, it distanced itself slightly.
While the attack power decreased with the added distance, the range of the attack increased. Gengar was hit by Alakazam's Psychic.
Yuga immediately noticed that Sabrina had used her psychic abilities to assist Alakazam. Yuga smiled slightly and activated his King of Ghost ability.
This was a power Yuga rarely used.
Then Sabrina was shocked to see black mist rising from Yuga's body, resembling dark flames burning. As a psychic, she instinctively felt a sense of revulsion.
What puzzled her even more was that the black mist seemed to be visible only to her; no one else in the crowd reacted.
Everyone present was a competent trainer, so they could certainly tell when Sabrina used her psychic powers, but the use of the King of Ghost ability by Yuga went unnoticed by anyone except Sabrina, who was a sharp psychic. The others could only watch the fierce battle between Gengar and Alakazam.
As Gengar sensed that Yuga had activated the King of Ghost ability, it felt a surge of excitement in its heart, and its ghostly aura began to swell. A faint trace of black mist even drifted from its body.
However, this faint black mist was barely noticeable, and only Yuga and Sabrina could perceive it.
With the boost from the King of Ghost ability, Gengar felt invincible, able to conquer both heaven and earth. Just then, Alakazam's Disable effect wore off, and Gengar raised both arms. A pitch-black Shadow Ball began to form in its palms.
The Shadow Ball grew larger and larger, with its energy waves becoming increasingly terrifying, making Alakazam on the opposite side feel uneasy.
"Alakazam, Light Screen!"
Unable to hold back, Sabrina shouted out the command for Alakazam to activate the Light Screen.
Alakazam raised its barrier, and Gengar launched the Shadow Ball.
With a sound like breaking glass, the Shadow Ball shattered Alakazam's Light Screen, sending Alakazam flying backward.
Gengar's Shadow Ball had successfully left Alakazam near death.
Just as the audience thought the battle was over, they heard Sabrina shout, "Recover!"
Yuga's expression darkened as he was about to order Gengar to stop, but by the time he did, Alakazam's injuries were visibly healing at an incredible speed, and Gengar couldn't stop it in time.
But it didn't end there. Sabrina then took out a Keystone, and Alakazam's hidden Mega Evolution Stone revealed itself.
"Alakazam, Mega Evolution!"
As Sabrina's voice rang out, a rainbow-colored light erupted from the Keystone and the Mega Evolution Stone. After the dazzling light faded, Alakazam's form had completely transformed into an elderly figure, exuding a terrifying aura, one that hinted at the potential of a Champion-level Pokémon.
Alakazam's ability switched from Synchronize to Copycat, instantly acquiring Gengar's ability, Cursed Body.
Poor Gengar had fought all this time without its Cursed Body ability ever triggering, only for it to be stolen by Alakazam's Mega Evolution (Gengar's original ability didn't disappear, though).
The Mega Evolution of Alakazam caused a stir among the spectators, with most of them quickly pulling out their phones to take pictures.
While Mega Evolution wasn't a secret for many trainers, not everyone had access to a Mega Evolution Stone. Some had never even seen a true Mega Evolution before.
Seeing the Mega-Evolved Alakazam, Yuga smiled wryly. "This girl is really going all out just to beat me. She's even using Mega Evolution."
In fact, Yuga misunderstood. Sabrina wasn't solely focused on defeating Yuga—she simply wanted a good battle. She hoped Yuga would give his best, so she had done the same.
Since her opponent was using all their power, Yuga decided to go all out as well. He shouted to Gengar, "Gengar, let's go!"
Gengar grinned at Yuga, took its Mega Evolution Stone out of its belly, and waved it at Yuga from a distance.
Yuga pulled out his Keystone, and the light of Mega Evolution erupted on the battlefield. Gengar Mega Evolved.
The gym leaders and trainers watching from the sidelines didn't expect to see two Pokémon Mega Evolve in one match. They were all ecstatic, their phones set to both photo and video modes.
Seeing Gengar Mega Evolve, Sabrina was quite satisfied, a rare smile flickering at the corner of her mouth, though it disappeared almost instantly.
"Gengar, Shadow Ball!"
Mega Gengar once again formed a pitch-black Shadow Ball in its hands. Though its size was similar to the previous one, the energy fluctuations it emitted were far more terrifying.
On the other side, several colorful orbs of light began to form around Mega Alakazam.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
The two attacks collided, and Mega Alakazam's Psychic attack held for a few seconds before being crushed by Gengar's Shadow Ball. It was clear who was stronger.
"Gengar, Curse!"
At Yuga's command, a flash of black light emanated from Mega Gengar, and a similar flash of black light appeared on Mega Alakazam. A look of pain flashed across its face.
But as Alakazam was hit by the Curse, its Thunder Wave struck Gengar, causing it to become paralyzed.
As the Curse deepened, the look of pain on Alakazam's face grew more intense, and its energy continued to drain faster.
Unlike Alakazam, which was skilled at using Light Screen for defense, Gengar, now paralyzed, found itself restricted in movement and became very passive.
However, with the tables turned, Gengar took advantage of Alakazam's distraction from the Curse and managed to sneak in a lick.
Gengar's saliva-covered tongue gave Alakazam a thorough face wash, complete with an electric shock, which made Alakazam feel quite the tingle.
Everyone watching could feel the shock as they shuddered from the paralysis.
Sabrina's Alakazam, being a female Pokémon, had its face completely wiped by Gengar's slobbery tongue. The expression it made was priceless—thankfully, they weren't in the same Egg Group, or Alakazam might have been chasing after Gengar to "take responsibility" for this.
With both sides now paralyzed, the battle reached a standstill, and the pace of the fight slowed down.
But while Gengar could still hold on, Alakazam, cursed and draining energy rapidly, was eventually worn down and defeated.
After the match, Sabrina nodded at Yuga, returned her Alakazam to its Pokéball, and made her way back to the spectator area. Her attitude toward Yuga had softened considerably compared to when he first arrived.
Yuga continued to engage in battles with other Gym Leaders, including Lt. Surge and Janine, who were both excellent opponents.
Misty also requested a battle with Yuga. In her words, she wanted to test the results of her Starmie's training in Meditation, which Yuga had taught her.
Once Yuga had finished battling with others, Erika came over to chat with him. Through their conversation, Misty learned about the Grass-type Pokémon Duel Tournament that would be held in Verdanturf Town.
Misty wasn't a Grass-type trainer, so she hadn't known about this event, but now that she did, she expressed her intention to attend and join in the excitement.
She thought that such a competition would definitely attract Ash, the battle fanatic, and maybe she'd even get to meet Ash and Brock.
Having had pleasant conversations with the various Gym Leaders, Yuga stayed at the Viridian Gym until it was almost dark. By the time he left, a patiently waiting Ninetales had found a spot to sleep and had dozed off so deeply that when Yuga found it, it was drooling uncontrollably.
