Darkness
That was the only thing I knew since I was little. I have been in an orphanage since I could remember, and life here was anything but pleasant. The director who was supposed to care for us used the government's money as funding, which was his own pocket money. Because of that, we were lucky if we could eat two meals a day, even more if one were warm.
The sisters who worked there were only there to spend the money with the director and didn't care about anything else. Twenty kids lived in this orphanage, and every day, they were on the brink of death. I was one of them. I don't have a name. Maybe my parents gave me one, but the people here didn't call me anything.
Growing up was hell, but it was the only thing I knew. I didn't know what awaited me outside or what would happen, so I stayed in the orphanage with the other kids. I was one of the oldest, so I stepped in and began caring for the rest. While my world was surrounded by darkness, the kids' smiles were the only reason that I kept going.
That was until one fateful day. The director dropped off food for the week and left us to use our devices. I quickly divided the food and let everybody eat their fill for the day before a big blue light began to shimmer out of nowhere. It was in the middle of the forest where people from the city would walk to here.
That was also where the director was walking. When I looked at this blinding light, I heard the scream from the person I had known my whole life, but instead of being sad, I felt happy. The bastard was finally dead. But just as I wanted to laugh, a strange energy began to enter my body.
The energy was strange but felt welcoming. It was the first time I felt this way, and I closed my eyes in ecstasy when I felt this energy flowing in my body. But when I opened my eyes, I saw the chaos unfolding. Some kids could adapt to the mana, but the other that didn't were clawing at their necks, desperate to breathe.
My mind went blank as I saw the kids that I was supposed to care for dying before my eyes. Just as I thought that I would lose them, something came to my mind. Without hesitation, I closed my eyes and yelled. "Azir!" I didn't know why, but I felt they would be fine as soon as I cast the spell.
When I opened my eyes, miracles began to happen. The kids who were clawing at their own throats took deep breaths and began to calm down. Looking at the rest with concern, the other kids now looked at me with admiration. I kindly smiled at the kids before reviewing the rations prepared for us this week.
"Let's go, kids. We have to go out and be free. I don't think that the director or the sisters will return, so we will have to supply our own food." I walked out of the front door with the kids behind me. Just as I wanted to tell them about what to do, my head felt heavy, and I passed out.
...
Waking up in a luxurious room was not something I expected. I didn't dare move because I didn't know where I was. Slowly opening my eyes again, I saw the luxurious room, but I was now scanning for items. It looks like I am alone in this room, and my arms and legs aren't bound, so this isn't a kidnapping. So, where am I?
When I finally had the courage to sit up and look around the room, this time in detail, I was astonished. This wasn't a room that I had ever seen, and the bedding that I am using now is a hundred times better than what I had in the orphanage. After I sat still for about a minute, the door on my left side opened. I looked towards it and kept sitting because I wanted to know what they wanted.
What entered was a gorgeous woman with green eyes. She looked nice, especially with the clothes she was wearing. Again, am I in a rich person's house or something because this doesn't make sense? While thinking, the green-haired woman already walked closer to me and stood next to the bed.
It felt strange because it felt like I was connected to this woman in some way, but I had never seen her before. "Excuse me, but where am I?" I couldn't resist the urge to ask what was happening. I wanted to see the kids and explain that I was fine. But I couldn't because the next moment, the woman who stood at the side of the bed reached out and hugged me.
My head was in her bosom, and she was stroking it. "It's okay, dear. You can relax. Nobody is going to hurt you while I am here." Her soft, mature voice sounded so soothing and calming that I immediately caved in and calmed down. Now, what is the last thing you remember?" the woman whose bosom was around my head asked.
I saw no reason to lie, so I told the truth. "I was just talking to the kids of my orphanage after getting these strange powers and that we would have to supply our own food," I explained softly while still in her embrace. The warmth I felt in this position was something that I had never felt before, so this is something that I have always wished for, but now is the first time that I have gotten it.
I hugged the woman back so that I would feel more warmth. "Thank you for explaining, dear. Get some rest, and I will explain everything you want to know. Now, get some sleep. I will stay here and wait for you to wake up."
To prove her point, she took a chair next to my bed, picked up a book on the bedside table, sat on the chair, opened the book, and started reading. I suddenly felt really sleepy, so I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
When I woke up later, I found myself in a better condition than I had ever been. Even the strange power in my body had calmed down a lot. When I wanted to wake up, memories from the kind lady came back to me, and I quickly opened my eyes to see if I was dreaming or not.
What I saw was that gorgeous woman still sitting at the side of my bed, calmly reading the book in her hands with a smile on her face. When she noticed I was looking at her, she lowered her book and fixed her attention on me. "How do you feel, dear? Are you fully rested?"
Her soft voice lifted me out of my trance. "Yes, I am fine now. This was the best sleep I have gotten in my life." She smiled kindly at me again.
"What is your name, dear? Do you remember?" Her soft voice asked a question, but I was too embarrassed to answer. 'What would her reaction be if she knew that I didn't have a name? Would she be disgusted with me?' My thoughts were going wild, but that all went away when I felt her warm palm on my cheek.
"I... I don't have one." I muttered when she looked me in the eye. I couldn't bear to lie or even make something up, so I just admitted the truth again.
"Ara, dear, that isn't good. Let me give you a name. Is that okay with you?"
"Yess!" When she asked, I knew immediately that I wanted it. This woman is someone I am connected to, and I couldn't possibly forget the warmth she showed me.
After thinking for a moment, she exclaimed, "Mmm, okay. From now on, your name shall be Lilith."
"Lilith... Lilith, haha, I LOVE it." Ahh, my new name. I love it. Lilith, what a beautiful name.
"Now let's go and eat something, Lilith. You should be hungry after all that you went through." As she said that, my stomach growled; she smiled at me, took my arm, and pulled me towards her. "My name is Tyche, so when you need anything, just call for me or ask for me, okay?"
I nodded at her words and followed her out of the room to the hall.
What I didn't know or just didn't pick up was the title of the book she was reading. The book was beautiful and thick; it had a red cover with green accents. But if you looked closer at the title, it said:
'The story of the hero of darkness Lilith and the creation of Azir'
