"Eric, I'm Awakening!" With a mysterious smile on his face, Alex turned to Eric, gratitude shining in his eyes.
"Awakening? What do you mean?" Eric asked, his confusion evident.
"Watch," Alex replied, knowing words alone wouldn't suffice. He extended a finger and lightly hooked it onto the small window's thick iron bar. To Eric's astonishment, the iron bar bent as if it were made of soft clay.
"You... What kind of power is this?" Eric stammered, his face a mix of shock and curiosity.
"It's the power that comes after Awakening," Alex explained with a hint of playfulness. "Do you know why I reached out to you? Because... you and I are the same. I sense a great power dormant within you. It seems that my Awakening is somehow connected to you."
"It's related to me? I possess this power too?" Eric's eyes sparkled with hope, and he spoke with an urgency born from the desire for freedom. "What should I do? With this power, we can escape! We can survive! Can you help me?"
Eric's eyes burned with determination and the longing for freedom, for imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp was a grim death sentence.
"That power is yours alone," Alex replied earnestly. "You have to awaken it yourself, perhaps through intense emotions like sorrow, pain, or fear. Everyone's awakening is unique, Eric. Your strength can only be awakened by you."
As the night passed, dawn broke, accompanied by torrential rain, flashes of lightning, and rolling thunder that roused the teenage prisoners from their restless slumber.
"Get up! Get up!" Rough shouts from armed soldiers pierced through the rain, sending shivers down the prisoners' spines. They were ordered to vacate the prison cells and proceed forward.
In the distance loomed a massive building, shrouded in darkness, devoid of windows except for a solitary door leading inside.
Alex's face grew paler as he recognized the place.
The gas chamber.
It was one of the most dreaded locations within the Nazi concentration camps, second only to the crematoriums where the remains of countless victims were reduced to ashes.
"Alex, they say people go in there every day, but no one ever comes out," Eric whispered, his face drained of color.
"The gas chamber," Alex acknowledged with a heavy sigh. The gas chambers in Nazi concentration camps were places of unspeakable horror.
"Gas chamber," Eric repeated, trembling with fear. He knew all too well the reputation of this place and clutched Alex's arm, seeking reassurance. "Alex, what do we do?"
"Don't worry. We will survive," Alex asserted with unwavering confidence. He had just crossed over into this world; he couldn't meet his end here.
Eric nodded, his anxiety slightly assuaged by Alex's words.
Then, amidst the crowd of prisoners being herded toward the gas chamber, Eric spotted someone—a familiar face.
His mother.
"Mom! No, Mom!" Eric cried out in anguish, tears streaming down his face. He grasped Alex's arm desperately. "Alex, please save her! Save her, please!"
"Eric, my power is still weak. I can only protect the two of us as we escape. If my abilities are revealed prematurely, it won't just be your mother; you and I will also face death," Alex explained, remorse tainting his voice.
Eric clung to Alex like a lifeline, his eyes red with despair. "Tell me what to do. You must know, right?"
"Eric, unless your power also awakens, it will be difficult," Alex replied gently.
"Tell me! How do I awaken it? I have to save her!" Eric pleaded urgently.
"Eric, use your emotions. Let your power roar forth! Are you sad? Angry? Afraid? If so, let it out, awaken your power," Alex coached.
Eric's eyes welled with tears as he bellowed in rage. A massive magnetic storm erupted, causing nearby metal objects to quiver and twist violently.
Magneto... was born.
(End of this chapter)
A magnetic storm engulfed the entire concentration camp as Magneto unleashed his anger, venting his pent-up frustration, pain, and fear.
The soldiers wearing helmets had their headgear twist violently, and the immense force seemed to crush their skulls, causing them to cry out in agony while shielding their heads with their arms.
Some soldiers, possessing stronger willpower, attempted to raise their weapons, but Magneto's fury was all-consuming, and he remained oblivious to their actions.
Alex, on the other hand, had been vigilantly observing their surroundings. Upon noticing the soldiers' attempts to retaliate, he raised his hands, manipulating their guns with his magnetic force, rendering them useless and contorted.
"Eric, go rescue your mother. Let's get out of here!" Alex urged, patting Eric on the shoulder to snap him out of his rage.
"Get out of here? Yes, let's get out!" Eric replied, his eyes filled with newfound determination, and he rushed toward his mother.
Amid the chaos, fallen soldiers, and fleeing prisoners, Eric's path was obstructed by the frantic crowd, causing his mother to be pushed further away.
"Eric, magnetism is an extension of your arm, and metal is your tool. You can make magnetism do anything you wish!" Alex's voice rang out.
"Anything? Then... I want to fly!" Eric exclaimed. The iron bars on the windows around him levitated, lifting him into the air.
"I'm really flying!" Eric cried out in joy as he soared through the air, reaching his mother's side and pulling her along.
"Alex, you were right! I've Awakened! My power is incredible!" Eric rejoiced, landing beside Alex.
Alex chuckled, fully aware of the plot unfolding.
"Yes, it's an incredible power!"
Suddenly, a voice echoed behind Eric. A middle-aged man in a meticulously groomed military uniform and a confident demeanor approached, a smile playing on his lips.
"The miracle of life, the enigma of evolution – truly fascinating. The ability to control metal? It's remarkable!" the middle-aged man remarked, his eyes gleaming with fiery intensity as he regarded Eric as if he were a priceless treasure.
"You..." Eric and his mother took a step back in terror upon recognizing the SS officer, a figure in charge of life and death within the concentration camp. The reputation of the SS was horrifying.
"I... I've Awakened! I'm not afraid of you!" Eric declared, his newfound courage surging as he hurled an iron rod towards the officer with a swift motion.
"Whoosh!" The iron rod cut through the air, faster than a bullet, and struck the middle-aged man's chest with a resounding impact.
However, to Eric's astonishment, the officer remained unscathed, not a hair out of place.
"The power is commendable, but... it holds no meaning in my presence," the middle-aged man remarked with a smile, flicking his clothing nonchalantly. He extended his arm toward Eric, speaking warmly. "I am Sebastian. Don't be afraid, don't be tense. Come with me. I am of your kind. Let's create a future together—a future where there are no inferior races, only noble mutants!"
"Demon! Executioner! I am not one of you!" Eric seethed with hatred, for this officer had ordered the execution of many innocent people in the concentration camp. Hatred was the only emotion coursing through his veins.
"Whoosh!" Iron bars hurled toward Sebastian like projectiles, but they merely clung to his body without causing harm.
Sebastian possessed the "Energy Absorption and Release" ability, enabling him to absorb physical and energy attacks as long as they didn't exceed his limit.
"Are you fighting against me? Do you despise me?" Sebastian asked, observing Eric's furious countenance. He frowned slightly and continued coldly, "I am of your kind. We are comrades united in purpose. Do you despise me because of them?"
Sebastian extended his hand toward Eric's mother and Alex, his eyes betraying a cold intent as he added, "Have these two inferior beings held you back? Very well, I shall help you rid yourself of them."
He unleashed a powerful shockwave aimed at Alex and Eric's mother, releasing the kinetic energy that Eric had previously directed at him.
