Bab 6: CHAPTER 6
Once Shen Tian reached the edge of the safe zone, he placed down his two weapons as well as the bag containing food and med kit.
He planned to use the bat first. Once the bat gets damaged beyond repair, he will come back inside the safe zone and switch to the makeshift spear. Of course, since the bat's durability is nearing its limit, he didn't plan to go too far away from the safe zone with it. He plans to go outside at just enough distance that he can run back to safety if the zombie he encounters is far too strong than what he can handle.
Before stepping out, Shen Tian surveyed the area outside of the safe zone.
It may be because the safe zone cleared out a large area yesterday, he wasn't able to see any lingering zombie within the clearing outside of the safe zone. He's just not sure how many zombies await him at the forest, though.
"Should I go outside a bit farther?", Shen Tian contemplated.
Since there are no zombies in the clearing outside the safe zone, it looks like he needs to go inside the dense forest to hunt. He knows that going inside the forest would be dangerous for him, especially since the forest area is an unknown area for him. However, he won't be able to complete the quest if he doesn't take any risk, after all.
Taking a deep breath, he bravely stepped out of the safe zone. He waited a while, just in case some zombie jumped at him after smelling his human scent.
He felt relieved when nothing of the sort happened.
He walked forward steadily, making sure to stay vigilant so that he can run back to the safe zone when something beyond what he can handle happens.
He was about to reach the edge of the clearing and if he walked forward a little bit, he'd reach the forest area. He looked back to the safe zone, and seeing that it is still within sight, he decided that he'll cautiously proceed further into the forest. As soon as he got near a big tree, he stuck close to it and peered forward.
A few meters away, Shen Tian saw a single zombie lazily shuffling.
'Lucky!'
He then bent down and started looking around to ensure that there are no other zombies lurking. At the same time, he also made sure to check his escape route.
'I must reach the zombie before it can react!'
Gathering his courage, Shen Tian ran as fast as he can toward the zombie.
The zombie, smelling Shen Tian's scent in the air, whipped his head towards his direction. But before it could see Shen Tian, the latter already swung the bat straight at its head.
The first hit wasn't strong enough to smash the zombie's head in, but it sure was strong enough to topple the zombie. Once Shen Tian saw the zombie on the ground, he immediately swung the bat repeatedly at its head. The zombie initially swung its arms around to try and catch its attacker, but Shen Tian was much faster at bashing its head. After three swings, the zombie stopped moving.
Shen Tian quickly looked around to ensure that the commotion didn't attract any other zombies. Seeing that there was no movement around him, he quickly bent down and checked the zombie's mushy head to see if there's a crystal core he can take home. It wasn't his first time checking for crystal cores, so Shen Tian was much faster this time around at retrieving it.
With one crystal core in hand, Shen Tian ran back to the safe zone.
Reaching the safe zone, he then sat on the ground to catch his breath. He can feel his heart beating so fast - whether it's because he ran fast or because he was bracing himself to fight against zombies, he doesn't really know.
As soon as his heart calmed down and his breathing stabilized, he rummaged through his bag and took out a half empty water bottle. He dropped the crystal core in.
He then picked up the bat that he dropped at his side. With the first battle, his bat was chipped here and there. He knocked on it and realized that he might only be able to swing the bat once before it gets damaged beyond repair.
He sighed deeply.
"It seems that it's time for the new weapon's debut!"
He put the bat aside and picked up the makeshift spear.
"Please make this more durable than the bat!", Shen Tian secretly prayed.
After giving himself a fifteen-minute break, Shen Tian braced himself again to go out of the safe zone.
One crystal core down, four to go.
