Bab 37: Chapter 37: A Quiet Town

"All right students~! We have arrived at Severton. Please rate driving five stars I and please don't take off for the Nightmare King's sleepless nights." Mill's friend tried to hold in their laughter as they saw Mill get out of the passenger seat of the truck. "Ha ha. very funny Myst." His eyes were red and had deep bags like he hadn't had sleep in two days. In fact, he hadn't. Every time he closed his eyes, he would have the same nightmare over and over again until he couldn't even think about going to sleep. And the weirdest thing was that he used to almost never have nightmares but recently they just wouldn't stop coming.

"Let's just forget about the nightmares for now. What are we looking for again?" Lua reached in her travel bag and pulled out the quest paper. "We are apparently looking for a mining cave so we should probably ask some of the townsfolk where that is." The boys nodded in agreement and the party walked into the settlement. When they made it inside, they noticed that it was oddly quiet. The sun was high in the sky so people should be bustling about to get work done but the streets were completely void of life.

"Okay, so right away this is very strange, isn't it?" Darren asked Mill. "I guess, or everyone just works the night shift, and we came too early." Darren laughed at Karl's joke and gave him a high five, but Darren was the only one to laugh as everyone else kept walking. They continued to walk through the town trying to see any sign that there were people but couldn't find anything.

"Did we come too late?" Mill looked around and though the town was empty and there was some evidence of battle damage Mill quickly scratched the idea that the town had been wiped away from his brain. There was rubble in some places, a few scorches here and there but there was no sign of blood of any kind be it fresh or dried there was just nothing.

"It's more likely that they all evacuated to somewhere close by." Myst threw in his own thoughts about the current situation and Mill nodded and responded. "Let's just keep looking around for now, I guess. Hey, maybe we'll be able to get a better idea of just what it is that we're gonna be fighting."

"That sounds like a decent plan." Myst nodded. Lua suddenly gave an idea, "Maybe we should split up, Mill." Mill turned to Lua and let her continue her idea. "This place is pretty big and if we stay together it'll take all day to check everything so maybe we should split into groups and search the town that way." Mill thought about it for a second. He didn't like the idea of the party being split but he couldn't argue the fact that it would be faster that way.

"Ok, we could split but we should be in three groups." The group nodded until they realized a mistake in the math. "There's five of us so that would leave someone by themself." When Darren pointed this out everyone agreed and turned to Mill as if asking him, "What are you thinking?"

"Oh, well that's simple," Mill lifted his hands and pointed at Karl and Darren, "You two are one group." Mill slowly moved his arms to Lua and Myst, "You two are another group." Mill pointed both of his thumbs to himself, "And I'm by myself. See? Three groups no problem." The rest of the group, however, didn't understand how Mill went about picking the groups and most of all how he decided that he would be alone.

"Wait, Mill. It's not that I have any problem with being in a group with Darren but how did you come up with these group arrangements?" Lua was the next to speak up, "Yeah, why the hell am I with the mysterious instructor while you get to be alone!" While Lua seemed quite obviously upset by her arrangements, the instructor in question didn't seem to question Mill's choice in the slightest. "Okay, just calm down Lua and let me explain."

Mill took a deep breath as prepared to explain but was cut off by the instructor, "Mill shouldn't need to explain his reasoning." Everyone turned to Myst and he continued, "You all decided to make Mill the leader so if he chose the groups then he shouldn't need to explain himself because he makes the final decision at the end of the day."

Everyone wanted to say something but couldn't argue with the instructor's point and just got into the groups that Mill chose. Mill smiled and gave a firm nod and started to give out further instructions. "Darren and Karl, you guys go to the east, Myst and Lua go west, and I'll go North we'll meet back up at the truck in around two hours to report our findings and think of our next move. Alright, see you all in two hours." The groups split off and Mill was alone. Honestly, he chose to be by himself because his nightmares were still bothering him.

He rarely had repeat nightmares and this town looked similar to the one from the nightmare so he wanted to check things out himself before telling any of his friends because he knew that they would probably laugh about him being the Nightmare King again. Mill moved forward to the north. Everything looked mostly the same except for a few more stores here and there. 'This must be some sort of market hotspot.' Mill walked into a few of the buildings and a lot of them were selling metal or stonework which made sense because the quest is about clearing out monsters from a mine. "Strange that there's no blacksmith though. You'd think with so many different types of ores that seem to come from this mine that there would be even one blacksmith, but I haven't seen any."

Mill kept looking and now he was sure that there haven't been any equipment shops, weapon shops, or armor shops. It's not like there were adventurers in every town that's why quest exist but it's strange that a town doesn't have anything for passing adventurers. 'I should just stop thinking about this and move on. Now, if I were a citizen of a mining town where would I hide.' Mill started to think when he heard a movement from one of the buildings. "Hello?" There was no response. "Is there someone in there?"

Mill slowly entered the building. It was a mess. Furniture was thrown against the wall and glass was shattered almost like a fight took place. Mill saw a mark on the floor and crouched down to examine it. It was red and sticky like, "Wait, is this blood?" There was no blood anywhere else but in this house there was. "What the hell happened in here?"

*Click* "The same thing that's gonna happen to you." Mill turned around quickly and saw an olive-skinned girl with green eyes and white hair and a scar the went vertically across her right eye. She was pointing a gun at him and was ready to pull the trigger.

"Get ready to die, monster."
