Bab 3: Chapter 3

ISOLATED

What in the world? She thought. A figure was crawling towards them, hair and body covered in thickened blood. It was barely covered in clothes that had lost its colour to blood as well. It snarled, grunted and gritted its teeth. This wasn't even an 'it'.

"How did this...what's going on?"

Leane grabbed the kid and stood up, no longer bothered about her wound. They have to run from what looked like a beast in form of a human. She looked around for an escape route but there was none. How did she find herself in what looked like a garage with the doors and windows firmly locked. How did the beast even get in?

"I know a place." The kid muttered, fear evident in her voice.

"Where?"

She pointed towards a dark and narrow passageway that looked like a stairwell to a basement. But first, they have to bypass this approaching beast.

"Okay. I'll distract this one right here, while you run off to the basement. I'll catch up with you, later. Now, run." The little kid nodded and then ran off in the opposite direction.

The beast had now straightened and was making its way towards where the kid had went. Leane rushed to the garage door and began to bang the metal steeled object. The red, ugly figure seemed to have been triggered by the sound as he ran after her.

"That's it, ugly. Over here!" Leane yelled.

It hurled towards her, arms outstretched and teeth all out to attack her. Something else made her stop. Someone else...no, a bunch of people out there were banging the door from the outside too. While the the ugly beast dragged its feet to get to her, she quickly placed a ear against the door and heard something similar. Snarls and gnashing of teeth.

They were outside too. She was stuck. The beast almost reached her, it's fingers closing in on her. She closed her eyes, awaiting what is to come as she asked numerous questions in her mind.

"What is going on? Where is the rest of  the team? Who are these people and how did they turn into beasts?" But most of all, how did all these start?

An earpiercing shot rang within the garage and she felt something wet and sticky hug her face. A scrunched up face but she needed to see who stopped the approaching snarl before her.

"This is by far the stupidest thing I've ever seen anyone do." Leane opened her eyes to see an old woman on a wheelchair. She held a rifle that she just used to shoot the beast.

"Thank you."

"The next thing you'll be thanking is your creator after you get torn apart. Move from the door and follow me." Cranky, but aren't all old women like that?

As she stepped away from the door, she flinched as something forceful tried breaking in. The growls made her whole body shook. It was almost like a pack of wolves were about to break into the garage. The old woman turned her wheelchair and rolled towards the hole where the little kid had gone. Leane followed immediately and just before the old woman automatically locked the iron gate, she had the chance to see them break in.

Her jaw dropped open seeing them rush in like hungry beasts. Most of them should be six feet underground by what she was seeing. But they were dragging their feet, alive and moving despite the fact that they looked they escaped the mortuary.

"Why didn't anyone call the police?" Leane demanded after listening to the old woman's story.

Patricia shot her a glare in the dimly lit room that smelt and felt damp from the lack of ventilation. "Didn't you just see that?"

"The walking corpse?"

Leane scoffed. She paused, sitting up as if she just remembered something. "The walking corpse." She repeated.

"Yes! The walking corpses." Patricia snapped. It's obvious as much as she wants to go into details, she wants to wave the sight off her mind.

"My sister isn't here." The small voice reminded Leane that they weren't alone in the small hole. Her heart jolted at the announcement.

"You have a sister?"

She nodded. "What's your name little kid and how'd you know this place?"

"My name is Iris. My mom used to come work in this area. When everything started, she asked me and my sister to come here and hide." Iris looked at Patricia pointedly. "She cleans your house and mows the lawn for you. That's how she knows this place."

"How did you and your sister separate then?" Patricia asked this time as they both looked at the girl with sympathy.

"We were both running to this place when her Kiki fell." Leane frowned. "Kiki is her toy. She tried going back to pick it but Kiki rolled under a truck and was stuck there. I ran here thinking I could get help."

"Oh my god!"

"Kids these days have nothing better to be passionate about except toys and technology." Patricia said spiteful. "I'm pretty sure your sister has turned into a meal for those plonkers."

Leane tilted her head. "What!? It's true."

She sighed and faced Iris. "Can you describe your sister to me?"

"You're not possible thinking..." Patricia wheeled closer. "If you step a foot outside, you're a goner. They won't think twice before yanking you into pieces."

But she had finished getting the description from Iris stating her sister was four, looked every bit like her with dark hair and violet eyes. It shouldn't be hard to find her. That's if she is still alive. The thought of finding the little child splattered on the street like a dog's food made her heart sink.

Leane grabbed a spanner wondering if it would suffice as a weapon.

"You don't know how many they are out there. You shouldn't take your chances, dear." Tired of the woman's whining, she turned to face her.

"Why are you being a coward about this? It's obvious we can't even stay here forever." She spread her hands. "I mean, it's damp and void of air. In a few hours, we will be more dead meat than those walking corpses and our hiding will all be for nothing. For what it's worth, I'm going out there to find her."

"Leane..."

"And, I'm checking out there too to know what's going on? Hopefully, I find a phone and call the police for help." As she made to move, Patricia called her name again.

"I see you're quite confident about this and I won't blame you. But before you foolishly go out there unarmed, take this." The old woman offered her rifle.

Leane looked down at it for a while. Has it really come to that? Killing people to escape commotion or what?

"I can simply hide from them."

"I've seen them with my own eyes, Leane. Those things follow whatever damn breathes without even using their eyes. They will get to you." Leane collected the rifle hesitatingly. "Don't say I didn't warn you."

Grateful, she waited until the door rolled before she got out. The garage was now empty, leaving smears of blood on the walls and floors. Prints of their hands covered in red decorated every objects too. She held on to the rifle tightly, looked back at Iris and then smiling.

"I'll find her and come back to you, okay?"

Iris nodded and smiled back, hoping lighting her face. Leane walked away, fear and nervousness curling her stomach. She jogged towards the garage door but slowed down to check around before stepping outside.
